Purple Row Fantasy Leagues 2010

Alright, I've renewed last year's Purple Row Roto league (with standard Yahoo! rotisserie 5x5 scoring) and given the top five finishers invites to return (myself included).

I've also created a Purple Row SABR league with roto scoring based on some intro to sabermetric stats (OBP, SLG, HR, SB, BA, ERA, WHIP, K/9, OBPa, QS).

The remaining seven spots in the Roto league and the 11 open spots in the Intro to SABR league will go to the people with the best "why I want to compete (with intent to win) in the Purple Row Roto/SABR league" essay (very loosely defined). Invitations will be emailed to the winners.

Besides myself (the Commish), there will be no multi-league participation, so those of you with invites to the Roto league (moomacher, jrockies, Franchise26, and Resolution) will have to decide which league you want to participate in.

LEAGUES ARE NOW FULL

The live online draft for the Roto league will be held on Tuesday March 23rd at 6 MST (you don't have to be present to participate in the league, but it helps to at least have a good pre-ranking list), while the SABR league will draft at 8 MST on the same day. I'm toying with the idea of that being an auction draft, but will defer to the league's participants as to the exact mechanics of the process.

Current Participants:

Roto (12 registered) FULL

Jabberwocky (me), MicroManagers (moomacher), Jrockies Diggers (jrockies), purplesocks, Wyld Stallyns *Rufus* (Resolution), UbaldoTryHairBThere (RockiesDave), ShadowPenguins, Coyotes (Sky Sox), Rocktober (Triple T Rox), P-Town Sexy Bitches (noelman31), Hammel of the Gods (Franchise 26), Justified (coolopotamous)

SABR (12 registered) FULL

Jabberwocky, mkorpal dragonslayer, COLORADOIRISH (fantasyfencing), Happy fun joy people (bballrox4717), Joe Girardi Univ. (Foxhole Atheist), The Bear Creek Bears (oo_nrb), Zeroes (phishbate), Sun City Madman (El Paso Jeff), Arctic Stiffs (jcn7vc), Jzilbek (Andrew Fisher), DancinHotDog (Maria M), PurplePassion

Total spots still available: 0

I'm considering the SABR league,

however, I’m also interested in going against my competition from last season. Any word on what the other invites from the Roto league are doing?

I would like a spot in the SABR league

Mostly because I can actually make the draft.

Why I should be in the league? Mostly because I want to avenge last years embarrassment. Never again will I rely on the Twins pitching staff.

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring (for either league)

Despite the fact that I have never participated in fantasy sports, well, ever, I strongly believe that every competition needs a dark horse. Purple Row’s fantasy baseball absolutely needs it’s own personal David Eckstein.

I'd like to put my name into the hat for the SABR league

if for no other reason than it will really get me to hammer down and keep straight all of the basic saber stats. I find myself having to Google the meaning of WHIP or the formula for OBP far too often – I know the principles of them, but I want to put it to use and maybe learn something along the way.

Also, if you let me in, I’ll do a logo or two for the leagues :) .

purplesocks is invited to the Roto league and ATF & coolopotamus have slots reserved.

This leaves seven open slots in SABR and six in Roto (provided Resolution and Franchise return to that one), with two of those “reserved”, making there 11 spots open.

I'd like to join the SABR league

for a couple of reasons:

1. I’m in a couple of leagues that use the more traditional stats already (including the one arpagamos set up), and I’d like to try something new.

2. I like the idea of using SABR stats for a fantasy league because it will more accurately reflect the player’s worth to his team in real life.

3. I’d really like to get to know some of the other Rowbots better, and I think a (friendly) competition is a good way to do that.

Played last year in a public league and got 2nd, but half the people obviously weren’t managing their teams which ruined it a bit. I’ve also done football and hockey, so I’m used to the commitment of running the team for a whole season ;-)
It would definitely be a blast to compete with fellow Rowbots!

Hey Jabbs

last year it seemed like a handful of participants weren’t aware of the “DL” roster spots. We should probably announce what they are and how they function or something at some point early on…

You've got one DL spot to stash an injured player on--then you can replace that player for free on your roster...

but when they’re ready to come off the DL you have to remove a player from your roster. Pretty simple.

I’ll be happy to answer any questions that y’all have though.

I'd Love to Play in the Roto League

if you still have a spot available. (But I’d do the SABR if that’s available and the Roto isn’t).

Why will I compete to win? Why should I get in?

All the games I go to (everybody on Purple Row probably goes to lots of games) probably isn’t enough. Even the great Rox games I’ve seen wouldn’t be enough. Many Purple Rowers were there for those games too, the subjects of so many other threads.

No drum roll, but here’s the reason: in my keeper league (10th year, NL only, 5×5) they named a rule after me. A couple years running I left auction dollars on the table. Eventually, under “the Duncan Rule” leftover auction dollars converted to free agent dollars. And I eventually did win the league.

Thanks, Jeff.

As for the draft vs. auction discussion, there’s no way an auction could be done in the time that’s available. And on-line auctions aren’t nearly as good as in person.

If it’s still up in the air I’d prefer a standard draft instead of auction. Auction may not go so well unless everyone attends and I’ll probably have trouble making 8pm on Tuesdays. They can also take quite a bit longer than standard drafts.

I’ll go along with whatever everyone wants, just thought I’d throw it out there.

by phishbate on Feb 23, 2010 8:42 AM MST reply actions

I prefer auction over draft

It allows there to be a level playing field, and takes more skill.

Guess I’d better stake my claim and defend my fourth-place finish in the ROTO league from last year. Count me in.

I sent you an invite to the league a while ago, if I'm not mistaken.

You sure did. Ended up in my junk email folder for some reason though. Glad I double-checked.

Hey Jabbs

do we need a 12th for the traditional Roto league?

coolopotamous has the slot for now, but she needs to get in the league soon or else the spot becomes up for grabs.

There are still two open spots in the intro to SABR league available...

who wants them?

If you need someone I will do it

Don’t put me in if others want the spots because I’m not a big fantasy guy (I don’t like having to root for players I hate that are on my fantasy team), but I’d be willing to jump in if you need someone.

I've never

played fantasy baseball before…but would be game for giving it a go.

I'd like to play in the Sabr league

I love fantasy baseball, I always play in the league at my work but about half the teams stop caring by July. If we make it cost anymore no one will play. So i’ve won the past two years. I would really appreciate a invite. I’m new to the Row, and would like the chance to get involved.

Invites sent to PurplePassion and Maria M (RIRF thanks for offering, I'll keep you as an alternate)

With that, unofficially the two Yahoo! leagues that I’m running are full. I’ll see you at the draft!

For other fantasy action, see arpagamos’ H2H fantasy league.

FOR SABR LEAGUE PARTICIPANTS ONLY:

I’ve added a poll up top for determining the type of draft we will have for the league. As I’ve stated above, I’ve never done an auction draft before but am interested in trying it. However, if there is a considerable amount of dissension among league members, we will switch to a regular snaking draft. I’m not sure if changing these settings will result in a different draft time or not, so that’s a consideration too.

Please let me know by Friday your opinions on the matter.

I'm up for doing auction but I'd personally prefer a different time/date

especially since they take 3-4 hours.

This would be my first auction type draft

And after doing several mock drafts, I think I prefer it. At the very least, it removes any luck with draft orders.

Auction

If most of the league is new to the auction format, then I want to do auction. I have never done it, but it looks fun. The draft time works great for me !!

Bumped to remind y'all about the drafts on Tuesday!

We’re going to try out the auction format for the SABR league, so we’ll see how that goes. See you then!
