Rumor control; No more purple jerseys
I ran into a acquaintance of mine the other day who happens to be on the ground crew. He says the Rox are going to permanently retire the purple jerseys and auction them off at a charity function. I like the purple jerseys and wish the Rox wore them more often. I can't confirm this; but thought preetyinpurple would like to know ! Bleeds purple; what do you think? The purple is what makes the Rockies different uniform wise and I am tired of the all black look. It was "RAD!" twenty years ago when the White Sox first did it. Now it makes it hard to tell who is who on my BW tv.

I think Renck wrote about that...
a while back…I don’t think that they have worn them since ‘07…I could be wrong, but I know they didn’t wear them at all in ’09.
Check out my website...www.rockiesreview.com
I'm pretty sure they weren't worn in 08 as well

We'll change
the name to Rockpile Blast, as RG has mentioned that was one possibility before she settled on Purple Row.
Of course, Purple Row is such a brand now that we can’t really change the name of the site.

As the resident uniform statistic nerd,
here are some quick facts for everyone:
Last time purple was worn (reg. season): September 1st, 2007, @ Arizona
Last time purple was worn at home (reg. season): August 12th, 2007 vs Chicago Cubs
352 straight regular season games without the purple
It’s a shame because the purple jerseys were part of what defined the Rockies. We look like the Marlins in our black vests and look like the White Sox in our white vests. Since the D’Backs ditched it, no other team in baseball uses purple, and now our use of the purple is limited to the pinstripes at home, the numbers and NOB on the road, and the BP jerseys. It’s a shame, because by losing the purple jersey the team is losing a core piece of its identity.
If they felt that having 3 alternates was too much, they should have ditched the white vests – it makes us look identical to the White Sox, hardly a way to broaden the brand.

Okay, so we should negotiate a deal with the Rockies, they can get rid of those purple jerseys,
but only if they bring back the 1999 uniforms from the future.
Actually, I think they should just redesign a different purple heavy alternate if they don’t like the current one. Like oo_nrb says, purple is what distinguishes the Rockies stylistically from all the other clubs and a key part of the team’s identity.

Purple is an accent color for this team. When did we even start with the purple-heavy stuff? It certainly wasn’t in the 90s, maybe I’m wrong about that but I don’t recall ever seeing the purple-heavy stuff until the Gen R era, so to me its hardly a part of our history, to me it was more than likely some sort of marketing gimmick to sell more stuff. Bright colors and silly logo type stuff is for the minor leagues.
How do you NOT find this attractive?

I have
some baseball cards where they are in purple and it looks really good. Brian Bohannon should not be used as the control in this system. I do think that they (and the black ones now) tended to get overused. I think the purple is better than the Sunday homes for the Padres though.

You must be a Yankees fan to think that bright colors aren't typical of major league teams. Dodger Blue is pretty bright, and has been for some time IIRC
The Orioles bright orange jerseys are another example. The Royals powder-puff blue has been a feature of their uniforms as long as I can remember as well.
At any rate, as to the point about the color purple not being historically significant to the Rockies is a little off too. When they introduced the first uniforms the key selling point was that Colorado would be the first MLB team in history to have a purple pinstripe, it really was the only distinction that the team would have from the Yankees or White Sox. It remains the only distinction, and I really don’t have a problem with an alternate that emphasizes that distinction.
A few thoughts
1. Is that really Big Bo? Wow.
2. I don’t mind them as a true “alternate”…i.e., worn a few times a year for some occasion, or even as a classic “Sunday Alternate.” I don’t like it in any case, but I can live with it.
3. The pinstripes are different. I’m in favor of those, because they are subtle…I’m only talking about the All Purples.
4. “Bright colors” was probably the wrong way to say it, really “non-standard” colors is what I was thinking. Dodger Blue is, of course, classic, and far and away my favorite baseball uniforms (the red numbers really seal the deal). Purple is a pretty horrible color for sports in general, the only pro teams I can think of that also rock purple are the Vikes and the Sacramento and LA Kings, and nobody is putting those jerseys in any “best of” lists (nor the old D-backs jerseys). Likewise, very few college teams rock purple, I’m thinking Northwestern and TCU, probably some smaller schools. Maybe I’m missing a few, but probably not any schools that have real football programs. The reason teams avoid purple isn’t because they are not creative, its because it doesn’t generally look good. (And, may be another, albeit minor, reason we don’t get taken as seriously as we’d like nationally. Gimmick stadium, silly purple uniforms, etc).
5. Certainly no Yankee fan, I hated them forever until Yankee Stadium gave Shawn Chacon a standing ovation in the playoffs, which actually bumped them slightly ahead of Boston in my estimation, but still at the bottom.
6. At the end of the day, I really don’t care. Its not like I’m going to watch/not watch based on what they are wearing. Simply stating that, if I had my preference, they’ll be mercifully retired along with the purple-bills.
and after the post below
how did I miss Washington as a team? It actually sort of works for them, I’ll admit, with the Gold. Maybe I missed them because it undermines my point, as I do like those jerseys. Or, maybe it makes my point (at least, to myself) insofar as I clearly can like purples, I just don’t like ours. (But even so, Wash’s road whites with purple numbers and the gold pants look better — again, accent color prevails).
I agree about the purple/gold combo working well
But I’m talking about the jerseys themselves, not the overall effect of the uniform. When I watch UW games (which are shown often on FSN up here), they look almost like JV uniforms or something. For some reason I always compare them in my mind to another team that has dark solid color jerseys – Penn State – and looking at those gorgeous, classic uniforms with their collar and sleeve trim UW just falls way short. The Rockies’ all-purple jerseys call the UW jerseys too easily to mind for me.

I can see why Oregon is doing what they are doing with all the wacky new jerseys, as its becoming evident that the kids/recruits love that stuff. But for my money, give me PSU, Mich, etc.
Teams that wear purple:
Vikings
Ravens
Sacramento Kings
LA Kings
Lakers
Phoenix Suns
New Orleans Hornets
TCU Horned Frogs
Washington Huskies
Northwestern Wildcats
Clemson Tigers
LSU Tigers
Kansas State Wildcats
East Carolina Pirates
Arvada West Wildcats

I might be in the minority here
But I never really liked the purple jerseys all that much. It wasn’t really the garishness of the color that got me so much as the fact that the purple jersey seemed boring. It’s pretty plain, there’s no trim, and I like uniforms with the “Rockies” lettering across the front better than the “Colorado”. Purple’s a fairly overwhelming color, especially in that shade, and the monotony of the rest of the uniform sort of arrests the eyes. I feel the same about the University of Washington’s football uniforms.

Personally I could let the purple jersey go
But I think they should wear the purple hats on Sunday games with the pinstripes. I am completely worn out on the black vest. I understand the mojo during the 07 run but it’s time to make that become the alternate worn 10 time a year. White pinstripes at home(jersey or vest) grey on the road.
I honestly wonder
if the players really enjoy the vests for some actual competitive purpose, considering how often they wear them now. I’d be surprised if the full-sleeves actually impede anything, but even if its just a mental edge, maybe its worthwhile.
One sad thing missing from the roids era: Ron Gant wearing those old vests with no shirt underneath, flexing those Shannon Sharpe guns.
I'm with you.
I never especially liked the all-purple jerseys and love the traditional white/greys but I really want them to use purple more often. Emphasizing it with the caps or in in trim, etc is best.
Reasons to keep the purple in some fashion
1) Purple mountain majesty above thy fruited(wheated) plain?
2) Purple hues in the sunsets over the mountains
3) Purple is the color of royalty/kings
4) Purple is pretty and unique, and suitable for alternate jerseys

Ridiculous...
…if true. It’s clearly a hallmark of this team’s look and feel. It’s one of your central colors, Rox! Don’t relegate the purple to just “borders” and “trimming!”
I'm pretty old school
I’m firmly in favor of white at home, gray on the road. Colored jerseys are for softball. That said, IF they feel they MUST have a colored alternate jersey, the purples are a million times better than those stupid black vests.
The basic unis (either the Rockies pinstripes or the CR vests at home, the gray pins away) are some of the nicest in baseball, and I’m glad they’ve changed so little over the years. The only change I’d make is to drop the pinstripes from the grays. Purple is a very nice trim color, and very distinctive.
I like the white vests at home much more than the regular white jerseys.
They just seem a little boring to me. The white vests are pretty sharp though.
And I like the vests just fine, they could make the lettering look a little better though.

They aren't eliminating Purple as a color,
they’re getting rid of the weakest of the 5 (FIVE!) jerseys. Colorado is still unique in purple as an accent color. Pinstripes, inside the “CR” on caps, the mountain in the logo, numbers on road jerseys, and Ding- ….er, scratch that last one
Purple is a good color to have for accents. But too much of a good thing, well, case in point…

Lots of Purple = Bad
We never got that bad (always had gray or white pants), but it’s just an example of how purple can be ugly.
-Joe
I have a hole in my chest from where Huston Street ripped my heart out.
The issue, though,
is that since purple is just an accent color now, we start to homogenize with the rest of the league. You can’t tell me that we don’t look nearly identical to the White Sox in our white vests, or the Marlins in our black vests.
Now we’re just among the plethora of teams that used to use black as an accent and it has now come to dominate their identity/alternates (Marlins, Pirates, Giants, Jays, White Sox, Orioles, Athletics, Mets, Diamondbacks, and for a while Royals and Reds).
In my opinion, the purple was the strongest of the alternate jerseys, because it helped us to stand out and created a unique identity for the team. Pretty soon, the Rockies will be purely black, white, and silver; I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d rather not watch the Raiders play baseball.

5 Jerseys?
You say they have 5 different ones… Is this the correct list?
1- White Sleeved with Purple Pinstripes (home)
2- Gray Sleeved with Purple Pinstripes (away)
3- White Vests with Purple Pinstripes (alt. home)
4- Black vests, no pinstripes (alt. away)
5- Purple Sleeved, no pinstripes (alternate)
I personally would ditch the white vests, and my favorite is the gray with pinstripes.
Also, I was checking out the team history, here:

I like vest style
more than the standard jerseys. And I get the (maybe false?) impression that the players like the vests better too. They’re probably easier to play ball in, no sleeves to restrict movement, and they’re probably cooler on a hot day.
I am a fan of the black and if I had 200 bucks to blow, I’d definitely get a black Tulo.
As for other colors…don’t really care if they’re purple or white or whatever. The road grey with pinstripes annoy me though. Pinstripes should be for home games only imo.

I heard it's a team rule that the uniform is chosen by the starting pitcher.
The last starting pitchers I know of who liked the purple were CC and JJ. To me that explains the dominance of the vests. Pedal Pusher knows that the ‘stros uni’s of the 70’s and 80’s were truly horrid. I don’t think they improved any with their current uni’s. He and I are probably the only ones here old enough to remember the laughingstock White Sox alternate that was worn one time in ‘76. Navy Blue short sleeve shirt with a white band about around nipple high about 8" wide with patriotic red block lettered SOX across the front and smaller lettered names in back .
Navy Blue ( I kid you not ) shorts with red white and blue striped knee socks; topped with a white hat. They were worn for a game of the week for the fourth of july .
Everybody laughed at them! I don’t think the purple jerseys were/are any where near that bad. SDcat; What happened to the Padres brown? I hear the new owners never want to see it again.
I think you're conflating...
two White Sox unis there. In ‘76 when they wore the navy shorts it was with the collared jersey with CHICAGO arched across the front in an old-timey font meant to evoke 1906. The block-lettered SOX jerseys with the horizontal band across the front weren’t worn until 1982.
