Saturday Rockpile: Mora officially signs, Torrealba's saga ends, more

Mora signs with Rockies - ESPN
The details of Melvin Mora's deal with the Rockies have been finalized, as Mora will get $1.3 million to presumably back up Ian Stewart, as well as be used in some capacity to spell Troy Tulowitzki and Clint Barmes. Mora has played virtually every position in his 10-year career.

Torrealba, Padres agree to one-year deal - The Denver Post
The former Rockies backstop has apparently signed with San Diego for $1.25 million, according to Troy E. Renck. I wish him luck with his new team, and hope that the Rockies are able to keep him in check during the 18-or-so games in which they'll see him this season. Also in the article, Renck mentions that the Rox will watch free-agent Noah Lowry throw in the near future.

Inside the Colorado Rockies " First baseman Josh Phelps should add power to Sky Sox | Major League Baseball in Denver
31-year-old power hitter Josh Phelps is among four players who signed minor league contracts with the Rockies yesterday, according to Jack Etkin. Also on the list are outfielders Alex Escobar and Bronson Sardinha, as well as former Rockies reliever Chris Gissell. Phelps, who is a first baseman, adds some power to the Sky Sox, who hit less than 100 homers last season despite playing half of their games in the hitters' park of all hitters' parks.

Rockies' Daley, who shunned the draft to get his degree at Bucknell, is a key cog in the team's bullpen - The Denver Post
Troy E. Renck has his own "underdog" piece about Matt Daley, to go along with the one that Russ linked to yesterday. On a side note, it's absolutely insane to me that Daley entered high school weighing 85 pounds, especially because I probably weighed double that amount.

That ITR piece

mentions that minor league pitchers and catchers report March 5, and position players report the 12th. This is great because I will be getting down there shortly after this, and the stuff they do in the first few days of camp are fun to watch because a lot of it is the basic work on this drill type of thing. Team mechanics come a little bit later.

by biondino on Feb 7, 2010 2:41 PM MST up reply actions

Funny you say that.

I did live in Hungary for four months; Hungarian and Finnish are both Finno-Ugric languages, quite different from anything else in Europe. Both languages employ suffixes as modifiers rather than additional words, so words can get exceedingly long. I took a Hungarian language course. I think I composed a fifty-letter two-word sentence :)

Noah Lowry

What do you guys think of Lowry? He has had a lot of injury problems the last few years but if he stays healthy I really like him. I think if the Rockies could get him on a minor league contract he would definatly be interesting to watch. I think when he gets into trouble he is very much like Cook when he gets into trouble. They both tend to leave the ball up in the zone and hittable. However, he has a good change up and good movement. If he get’s his mechanics set up right and stays healthy he could be a good 4 or 5 pitcher. For me this is just a gut feeling, I do not have much of a statistical argument for him, but he has shown some real flashes of being a very good pitcher.

What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????

Torre made the absolute dumbest decision he could've made.

I know his agent had a large say in what happened, but how can you reject that offer? Ultimately, it comes from the player, not the agent, who says “yes I want that deal” or “no that’s not what I’m worth”. Come on now Yorvit.

Who knows what the real story is

obviously more went on behind the scenes because on paper its a fantastically foolish move. But whatever, no longer our concern and, as I may have said before, I’m not terribly inclined to feel sorry for someone who will make a million bucks to play a little ball down in lovely San Diego. Wish him the best, hoping that Olivo is the superior choice.

I don't know what's scarier

the extent to which Torrealba overvalued himself, or the extent to which our FO overvalued him. Pretty frightening that we offered him $5.5 mil over two years when his actual value appears to be less than one quarter of that.
