Royals 5, Rockies 0: Jeff Francis pitches effectively in Royals snoozefest of a win

In a preview of the 2010 Fall Classic, the efficacious Royals downed the Rockies 5-0 this afternoon. The teams were scoreless for the first six innings, which for three innings had an improved Jeff Francis on the mound. As Troy Renck reports:

Francis showed much better fastball command than he displayed in his Cactus League debut last Friday. [...] Two Royals reached in the first on singles, but Francis escaped damage. He walked pitcher Zack Greinke on six pitches to lead off the third, but Greinke was erased straying off second base on a rundown after a groundball to shortstop.

Yeah, that walk to Greinke was embarrassing since Greinke was told not to swing the bat.

Tim Redding came on for the next three innings and presumably helped his case to be on the 25-man roster, allowing one hit and striking out three. Manny Corpas took the loss because he allowed the first run, but it was Edgmer Escalona who allowed four runs on four hits in the eighth inning.

All in all, this game was a snoozefest. Texas tomorrow.

In other news, Ubaldo Jimenez was officially named the Opening Day starter.

What? How could he be the opening day starter?

The MSM said it would be Francis since he is our true Veteran potential 20 game winner? I am confused…

A confession:

I haven’t really been paying too much attention to the games so far beyond checking out the boxscores. It just doesn’t feel real to me yet. When I return from Spring Break then I’ll be more ready for baseball.

I'm with you there.

Yeah, but when you don’t care about wins or losses, it doesn’t quite feel real. Feels like practice. It’s nice to have updates on players every day, but still doesn’t match the first week of April

Tim Lincecum is on ESPN Radio with Brian Kenney

and when asked what one player he’d prefer never to face, he named Todd Helton. Said Helton owns him, and when he managed to get Todd to swing and miss once last season it was a big deal for him. Heh.

Also, when asked one team that impresses him he named the Rockies.

by holly96 on Mar 10, 2010 6:49 PM MST reply actions

Stop making me like you Timmy

Interesting…..

Helton has batted .474 with 1 HR, 1 2B, 6 BBs, 1 K and a 1.284 OPS in 25 PA.

Chris Iannetta has hit .500 in 22PA (his 2nd most against any pitcher), with 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 2B, 8 BBs, 3 Ks and a 1.644 OPS against Lincecum.

GameDay doesn't technically exist during Spring Training.

The GameDay app is tied directly into the box score app for MLB.com. This is so that every update matches itself consistently everywhere, so as not to provide observational confusion. During the regular season, MLB.com hires people to operate the GameDay app from each stadium. These updates usually go undone in ST, as MLB.com doesn’t hire people to update it. They just have a scorekeeper present updating the box score. Sometimes (such as yesterday’s game), they decide to play around with gameDay too. But since it is unreliable and incomplete, and usually only updated along with a box score update, there is no reason to advertise the GameDay viewer. Hence why we have to link our way in manually.
