PrintOkay, not really, but we have to keep the drama for meaningless games somehow. Actually, these two teams have made these familiarity storylines a running theme in their Cactus League contests the last couple of years, as Jim Tracy's son Chad hit a big home run for the Rangers in one of last year's contests.
The Rockies lineup:

I'm curious to see Rox Girl's analysis of Hawpe.
She said that it would prove that everybody was wrong about him. I’ve been on the Smith bandwagon with everybody else, but I would switch allegiance if she can show that Hawpe is better for the team.
Actually, I wouldn't be expecting much on that front.
I think my main thesis is that having both Hawpe plus Smith is still better for the team than having just one of them. After that, it gets political in terms of who starts, and it seems the team has calculated that the trade off is worth the improvement Smith brings defensively. I’m going to explore why they feel that way, and what evidence there is to back them up.
Ah yes, I remember a similar discussion a little while ago.
I was on the side saying that the team would be better off by trading Hawpe to fill other holes, and you argued that the drop in performance from the bench would offset any gains from upgrading elsewhere. (I hope I haven’t spoiled your next article.)
Oh no, your argument's one of the major ones I do have to address.
I either have to do that by showing that removing Hawpe (and his salary) won’t guarantee that these holes get filled, possibly leaving the team in as bad or worse condition than before with some added damage to the team’s goodwill with the players, and second, that this bad scenario would be a more likely outcome than trading Hawpe and adding sufficient value to other positions. Plus, I have to convince you guys that even if the likelihood of a bad outcome is smaller, if there’s sufficient risk of that bad scenario, it would behoove the team to stay conservative (meaning keeping Hawpe) given their current contending position. Again, this is going to be a tricky sell, I have to get some idea of the numbers we’re talking about to back my position up, and perhaps to thoroughly convince myself of it as well. I do think it’s a lot more complex an issue than Jeff and Andrew have suggested.
Well, in your defense,
there aren’t a whole lot of places that stand out as needing improvement. I think the most obvious one is second base, but if you upgrade over Barmes’ bat, you also have to consider the effect on defense. Now that Felipe Lopez has signed, I just don’t see many options for improving at second (and I’m not entirely sure about his defense). I think that would have to play into your argument as well. For example, trading Hawpe for a starter wouldn’t realistically improve the team at this point, unless Francis can’t pitch.
oops, forgot to complete my thought on the second approach to this argument, which actually might be similar to the first
which I think you just kind of did yourself that would be that filling these holes internally would do just about as well as any external options, or at least well enough to justify keeping the extra outfielder.
That photo of Hurdle still cracks me up.
Also, maybe Paulk should give another position a chance after today’s news, heh.

Wow.
It seems like most teams don’t bring their entire A lineup on the road trip to Tuscon.
its been a hot topic of ST conversation for the past couple of years
Especially with The White Sox moving from Tucson to Phoenix…Omar was one of the most outspoken about teams sending their B or C squat down to Tucson, of course. And then last year, when the role reversed, he sent much of his B team down…
But this is a major reason we will be moving up there next year…Its too bad really Because the people on Tuscon lose all that revenue and the only municipalities that get it now are in the Phoenix area. and I personally like Tuscon 10 times better than Phoenix because as a city it is like on spring break all the time….Laid back and affordable.
But evidently early in ST teams want to get work outta their starters, I think as ST progresses however, the phoenix teams that come down will send the Rooks.

Maybe you mean Ozzie. The only Omar I can think of is Minaya, and the Mets are in the Grapefruit league.
I have relatives in Tuscon, and I was hoping to go to ST one of these years now that I have a job with actual money. My favorite AL team is the White Sox, so I was bummed when they moved to the Phoenix area.

I felt that way at the time, but considering his flaws, letting him go off waivers wasn't really that big a deal in the end.
I AM, however, still angry about the Juan Morillo situation, which I think was handled completely wrong.

After spending an hour trying to get Flash to update properly
(it kept updating to an old version, so I finally had to completely uninstall it and reinstall), nope. Videos still don’t work for me in Firefox. And now they won’t work anymore in IE. There’s clearly some extra step required to make Flash work in IE after uninstalling/reinstalling.

Here, let me try it this way: saying he’s part of the family, part of the team, etc, is not an answer for my interpretation. it’s weird to me because it will be a player who will not BE on the team when we are watching games. It’s like how I felt when the Fuentes commercials or the Hirsh commercials came up when they were on the DL. They’re advertising a player we won’t see.

all Rockies fans have a certain amount of love for EY2 solely because of his dad. He is the first Rockie Kid to come up through the ranks and we are all proud of him.
I personally don’t find it odd that a minor league player is in the major league ads solely because it is EY2. Anyone else and I think you have a very strong argument.

But see, you ARE missing my point. It doesn’t matter to me that its EY2. or that its a minor leauge player. Just a player who won’t be on the team! And I;;m not saying this has to matter to anyone else. It’s just going to be weird for me. I;m going to see the commercial and think “oh, there’s EY2. I wonder how he’s doing down in the minors”, as opposed to everyone else, who I’ll get to see in 30 seconds after the commercial break is over.
