PrintThe Rockies will play a split-squad Brewers team today at Maryvale Stadium. Last time we saw Jason Hammel on the mound was in the Rockies' 5-4 victory over the Royals. Hammel threw three innings of one-run ball (the run coming off a home run) and struck out two. Parra also saw his last action in a game on Monday when he allowed four hits and a walk in three scoreless innings against the Mariners.
I hope the weather in Arizona is nicer than here in NY. The heavy rain we have here would have canceled baseball games. And canceling a baseball game, even a Spring Training game, would make Rockies fans unhappy.

I can't tell you how jealous I am
I have never gotten a ball at a baseball game. No foul balls, home run balls, batting practice balls, player-tossed balls. Never. Not at major league games, not at minor league games. I should go to Spring Training sometime.

I literally had to slide down an embankment to pick it off on the bounce between a couple guys running for it. There are certainly more chances in ST but this was my first legit shot

it's been from some of the guys you'd least expect too
Stewie was solid last year and not looking great so far. That will come around too though I’m sure.

I’m really high on Stewart, and a lot of that’s due to his defense. I think he has the tools to be an elite third baseman, I just hope he focuses and puts it together.

I imagine that shaking off the rust after 3 months off
is toughest at third base. I’m sure he’ll come around. He’s always been great at D for his entire career.
His entire career was miserable defensively before last year.

Stewart has never had a full season in the minors with less than 19 errors.

I'm wondering if playing newxt to Tulo helps him
He had seven errors at 3B last year and I remeber at least two of them coming during games Tulo was not playing. Maybe he feels he has to do less when Tulo is at short.

He was always pegged as a guy who would be great defensively
He has great range and arm strength, leading to more errors that a less talented fielder would accrue. His natural defensive skills have never been in question

Off Topic:
I was just looking at the first few weeks of the schedule and noticed something. After opening on the road against the Brewers the Rockies next road trip takes them to the east coast where they play Atlanta and Washington. I find this interesting because this could mean the Rockies will be the team that has the face Stephen Stasburg in his first start. I know that there is debate as to whether or not he will start the season in Washington or make a start or two in the minors first.
When he does make his first major league start, it will be when the Nats are playing at home (because it’s more profittable for them that way). That could mean he makes his first start when the Rockies are in town for four games in the third week in April.

I disagree
There’s not a whole lot gained by taking third with two outs. You had better be positive you’ll make it before risking a situation when you have the tying run in scoring position. I love Garner, but the ball didn’t get away far, and it was in front of the catcher. Not a good move
