Rockies 5, Cubs 2: Rockies score late to grasp victory from the Cubs

Entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rockies were down 1-2. By the end of the inning, the Rockies led 3-2 as a result of Troy Tulowitzki's two-run homer, his first of Spring Training. A couple more runs for the Rockies came in the bottom of the seventh to put them ahead 5-2.

Jeff Francis allowed a run in the first and second innings, but had clean frames in the third and fourth. He also struck out two. Manny Corpas and Matt Daley each pitched one inning of relief, and in between the two of them Jhoulys Chacin went two innings, struck out two, and surrendered one hit. Franklin Morales closed out the game and struck out one.

Just to echo what others have said

On the whole, I'd say Francis was worth adding some guarded optimism over

He seemed to have solid control, missed some bats on his change-up and only gave up a few solid hits. I have no idea on his velocity, but his windup looked smooth and comfortable.

I was in touch with Renck earlier

said Francis had his changeup for all 4 innings, which is a definite positive thing, and got his fastball up around 89.

basically if you're throwing a change 4 innings, it means your form is coming along nicely

you need the full arm motion to really be effective with it.

yay jeff

Elaborating..

they starting some calastinic type drills. Todd and Jason Giambi, were just laughing out load bout something… I was a good 50 feet away enjoying the human side of these guys. After awhile they broke out the exercise bands… got in a circle and a game of duck, duck, goose broke out, But what I enjoyed the most was when it was time for pitch and catch… Helton and Giambi paired up… Helton was asking around to borrow a glove. Really…. for a while it seemed no one had a spare. “Where Hawper? I bet he has one.” Giambi suggest. Helton began yelling for Hawpe “Hawper” he shouted… Some savior, yells “Todd we have one here.” Finally him and Giambi were set. After a few pitches Giambi misses Todd’s throw the ball goes 30 or 40 feet behind Giambi and sets there. The clowning returned.. instead of just getting the Todd goes over and request another ball from Glen Allen Hill I believe. A short time later Jim Tracey laid out some ground rules for a bunting derby of sorts… Frey one in too rounds over taken Jeff Francis for the lead. Afterwards, walking between the practice field and Hi Corbett, the guys were signing autographs and such…… We were about half way to Hi Corbett, when out of nowhere a golf cart darted past us. Helton riding shot gun, a huge grin on his face…. At first I found it odd,,, But after a little thought my guess is to get to the field on time and not get mobbed this was probably a good alternative…

The access to these guys is FANtastic, my only hope is that this remains the case next year when they move. But I had to wonder if it is a distraction to them, at the same time.

Helton

returned a short while later with a bat and helmet to hit against a Huston Street simulated game.

Where were you standing exactly because I was standing in the same area with ATF and mkorpal laughing at the stuff going on as well, including Helton and Tulo cross firing at the other’s catch partner (Barmes was originally throwing with Tulo and Giambi). They then went back to normal.

We started out right bout the edge of the in field on the 3rd base line… and moved to behind the 3rd side dugout. during the bunting…

I'll be in the lawn seating as well

I doubt the area will be sold out. They could always squeeze more in. I’ll be wearing a white Iannetta jersey t-shirt. We usually camp in left field, but I haven’t seen the White Sox stadium. We’ll see

Huston Street

through a simulated game to Helton, Frey, Jeff Kindel and Chris Nelson today. He was leaving the ball up but he had good velocity and a good bite on the few sliders he threw. He said afterward that he felt okay pitching and he would probably feel better tomorrow. This is a good sign.
