The first ST photo I saw of him he looked a little pudgy to me.

I thought it was just my mind playing tricks on me, but now I wonder if he packed a couple extra pounds on in the offseason and that’s affecting his defense this early. No matter the reason, his defensive missteps better be temporary.

The truth shouldn't be sad.

It should be enlightening. The dropoff is bad, but if the Rockies stay at least steady there should be an uptick soon.

So where does Friedrich project if not #1?

Most of the rankings I’ve seen have put him higher than Matzek. I assume that is because he’s closer to the majors, but what is his upside? Does he lack that dominant out pitch to be a #1?

by RoxnSox09 on Mar 17, 2010 9:28 AM MDT reply actions

it might just be that his fastball isn't OMG

I’ve heard right-handed Barry Zito comparisons, and Zito was never really ace-caliber, Cy Young award or not. Good pitcher, sure, but never a “blow you back” kind of guy.

the distinction is really “ace” v. “a team’s #1”. Cook was our #1, but he’s no ace. Matzek has the potential to be a perennial all-star, and I’m still shocked/thrilled DOD did it.

just curious

how is this dead horse any less dead than the Yorvit stuff was last year? Sheesh. Either its all good or there are some standards around here. I don’t care which, just pick one. (and I agree Smith should be starting, but it sucks going into the year with so much negative vibe about one of our hallmark players).

You are oversimplifying the prior situation.

Nonstop, relentless killing of Hawpe directly, or indirectly via excessive Smith ranting (and the promise to continue doing so) is the obvious point I was making. Dead horse. “Smith should be starting.” Whatever, not trying to pick a fight. Don’t Redhawk me, please.

by Teekalong on Mar 17, 2010 11:04 PM MDT up reply actions

I see it more as a

“damn, we have too many good players, I wish there was a way to get them all equal playing time, but Smith will likely get the short end of the stick” sort of resignation.

Now if Hawpe would’ve been the only backup 1B, no Giambi, I bet this talking would be less, since we know Smith would get starts when Hawpe fills in for Todd at first. But as it is, the only conceivable starts Smith will get will be because of injury or someone slumping badly.

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

Anybody see the mgl article on The Book about park factors?

He’s saying that the current method is inaccurate because it assumes a balanced schedule, and that each player spends equal amounts of time in his home park and in “neutral” parks. In reality, due to the unbalanced schedule, Rockies players spend more time in pitchers’ parks when they are on the road. Another factor in creating those home/away splits that the MSM uses against our hitters.

I think the difference in pitch movement is another factor.

I’ve mentioned this before, but the Rockies hitters are at a disadvantage when they go to parks where the pitches move more than at Coors. This also exacerbates the splits. Hopefully, in 7 or 8 years (when a certain Rockie is receiving HOF attention) people will have a better understanding of these factors.

by RoxnSox09 on Mar 17, 2010 11:45 AM MDT up reply actions

I'd actually be interested to see this with Pitch f/x

It would probably only make sense to look at NL West pitchers and their pitch movement at Coors/Not at Coors. Maybe someone who is unemployed should take some time and look at this.

i discovered that inaccuracy when researching how to do park factors for my WAR series on the nl west

I ended up assuming neutral road parks as well, because the math would get incredibly invasive for a nominal accuracy gain. There would he iterations everywhere
