MLB 2K10

For all XBOX 360 owners out there (I'm assuming by default that PS3 owners will buy the superior MLB the Show), has anyone else bought MLB 2K10 yet? As a 360 owner, it's unfortunately my only choice, and I've bought it each year it's been released on the 360. As many of you probably know from experience, past games in the franchise have been buggy, disapointing, and unplayable a lot of the time. Due to this, my expectations are not high for this version of the game, but I have to buy it anyways because it's baseball.

My experience with the game is limited right now, having only played one game so far. I played the Pirates and beat them 1-0 on an Ian Stewart solo HR. I'm rusty, so I just played on the default settings. Overall, I enjoyed the game and can already tell it's a major improvement over 2K9 (which isn't that surprising, considering how bad that game was!). I like the hitting and pitching mechanics so far; I felt very powerful pitching with Ubaldo, but I wasn't able to have pinpoint accuracy like last year's game (a good thing in my mind, since it feels possible to actually walk someone now!).

I like having the swing stick simplified from last year to include three swing types - contact, power, and defensive. I mainly used contact in this game, and I had a number of singles to various areas of the field. I was a little disapointed at the lack of extra base hits though; I'm hoping this is just due to me getting used to the game again. I rarely used the power swing, but it did pay off in one instance with Stewart's HR. For defensive swings, I only used them a few times, but it seems like a good addition, particularly since our favorite first baseman is so renowned for staying alive during an at-bat.

The new camera angle while you're at-bat is also nice. I'm able to discern balls from strikes much better, though I need to cut down on my free swinging tendancies still. I did draw a few walks in the game, something that rarely happened on previous versions of 2K games for me.

Fielding is much smoother this year as well. Finally there's no lag during play, and the ability to pre-load a throw is a nice feature as well. I can't comment much on stealing, having only attempted it once with Dex (I got a terrible jump and was out easily). Graphics seem pretty good, and I like the presentation (it should be even better in franchise, as the announcers will keep track of your season and actually have say things that have merit to the here and now).

It'll be interesting to see how I feel about the game as I progress. I haven't even delved into the franchise or My Player aspects yet, let alone online play. The game certainly feels like more realistic baseball then past versions, and it seems to be worth at least a rental to me if you're on the fence. PS3 owners will likely go with the Show, and I can't blame them; I'd be right there too if I owned one.

Phew, this is getting longer then I anticipated. Take a break if you've read this far down. :D Besides any impressions of the game so far, I wondered if anyone had looked at the minor league rosters yet. I like to be very accurate with my rosters, at least as I start a franchise. This includes finding the "fake" minor league player names and correcting it. Though I'll likely include a good amount of other team's top prospects if I can, the ones I really care about are the Rockies. In past versions, I've been able to find a good amount of matches, but not all could be matched to a real Rockies prospect. I'd like to find out which minor leaguers are in the game and get my roster as accurate as I can before compensating with what is left and having to look at Chris Nelson with the wrong skin color. ;)

Anyways, if anyone finds any matches and would like to post them, I'd appreciate it. I'm sure others are like me and like to have accurate rosters, so this would be a big help. I'm just starting on my own look through of the rosters, but here's an example of a fake name and his real life counterpart:

Seems nice,

though I can’t say I’ll buy it, though (waiting til Tulo’s on the cover or something to buy a new baseball video game).
So, I guess for me it’s good ole MLB power pros for at least another year.

This is R year!

Bad Jorge on the mound for me

I decided to start de la Rosa in my first game at Coors (playing Detroit). Smooth first inning, but I’ve lost my control and composure in the second. A walk, two base hits, a double, and a suicide squeeze (I almost dropped the controller when that happened) have me at a 4-0 defecit already, and I haven’t recorded an out in the inning yet.

Also, on the minor leaguers, I’ve read around a bit and there isn’t a lot of info out yet. I guess that’s good because it means people are playing the game, but one bit of troubling news I read said that minor leaguers may not have the same initials like in past games, which will make it more difficult finding matches.

i was definitely disappointed with 2k9

I made 54 errors with ben zobrist one season despite only playing about 50 games. Buggy is an understatement. Wish I could get The Show. Ill probably upgrade to 2k10 at some point.

Who are the game announcers and do they pronounce Rockies’ names correctly?

The announcers are

Gary Thorne, Steve Phillips, and Purple Row’s favorite whipping boy, John Kruk. They seem to be pretty good so far; I’m interested to see how it works during franchise mode as they talk about what is actually going on in your season. Even during my exhibition game, when Tulo came to the plate, they talked about how Jim Tracy moving him to the cleanup spot in the lineup really gave him a boost. I also appreciated when they said Ubaldo has the potential to be a 20 game winner – hopefully it’s a good omen.

As for pronunciation of names, the only one I’ve noticed so far that is done correctly is when Thorne talks about Barmes. He says “Barms”, just as he did in 2K9, unfortunately.

by avsfan4ever33 on Mar 2, 2010 7:01 PM MST up reply actions

So Kruk doesn't say the Braves are the favorite to win the wild card in the game?

………because if he doesn’t then the game isn’t very realistic. :-)

I was hoping Phillips' indiscretions would remove him, but Thorne irked me more

He said EEanetta in 2k9 too.

Oh, that's right

I didn’t notice the mistake with Iannetta’s name, but I’ll try and remember to listen specifically for it the next time I play and see if it’s gone for good. “Barms” still being included worries me about the same mistake being made for Iannetta.

Also, I’ve just read that the minor league rosters are drastically different this year. Before, we at least had a clue because the initials would match, but apparently that’s had to be changed this year because of a lawsuit against EA Sports’ NCAA Football. So, I’m hopeful the players are still there, but they’ll certainly be harder to find. At least this may explain the Rockies having several near 40 or over aged players on their AAA squad though! ;)

I made the mistake of buying 2k9 for the PC, it was literally so buggy that I could not play it. I gave up after the first couple game attempts.

Same here. Not sure I will have time to play 2K10 until August though

so I will just go without a game this year probably.

Just got 2K10 for the Wii

I’m really impressed after 2K9 debacle. The pitching is great (although the stamina doesn’t seem accurate to me) The hitting is decent, I need to get better. The thing I’m most impressed with is how much easier baserunning is. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ran myself out of a rally due to shitty base controls.
The default Rockies roster has Dex on the bench in favor of S Smith (hitting 8th?), Has “Barms” hitting 2nd, and Cook as the #1. No Giambi, Olivio or Mora on the bench. I havent dug into the minors yet, but EY2 and Chacin made the team.
The PA announcer says Iannetta’s name right, but the play by play guy just says #20.

Hitting for the Wii

Is the hitting actually using a swing motion? I have tried quite a few baseball games for the Wii lately and some did not use the actual swing motion. I think Backyard Baseball did, but I was looking for a game w/ more real players.

The Wii does use the swing motion

It is actually more like a flick of the wrist. I stayed up pretty late playin last night, and improved my hitting drastically on the pro level. Even had 2 HR’s by Tulo in one game. Fixed my rosters. All the Rockies signings (Giambi,Mora,Olivio) are in the Free Agent pool. It was also easy to put all the FA with the correct teams.

Does the Wii have the living rosters feature?

I’m guessing not, hence the out of date rosters. For the 360, the rosters were quite accurate with the living rosters feature. The only moves I had to make were sending EY Jr to the minors, adjust the lineup slightly to put CarGo and Dex at the top, and remove Corpas from the set up role.

by avsfan4ever33 on Mar 4, 2010 9:28 AM MST up reply actions

I didnt really check

I don’t know why I didn’t go online with it to update the rosters. I know my Madden always did the live updates on my Wii. I just like playing a bit and getting familiar before getting my ass kicked on-line.

The absolute ONLY thing that's bothered me about 2k10

Jim Tracy looks nothing like Jim Tracy. How could they screw that up?

I used to be like that

and still am too free-swinging at times. But at least in 2K10 I’m able to recognize pitches out of the strike zone much easier, and the pitchers actually throw them so you have to be much more patient.

It is very satisfying batting with Helton though. He recognizes everything out of the pitcher’s hand, and it’s very easy to battle and foul off close pitches until you get one to your liking.

Now that the peerless Muzia has posted me the game for my PC

Can I ask for tips for a total baseball-game noob? How can I get started without completely confusing myself but while making sure I make the most of the game?

Thank you!

by biondino on Mar 8, 2010 5:34 AM MST reply actions

I'd suggest starting with

the drills, especially if you’ve never played a baseball video game before. The drills are actually done fairly well and are a good tutorial to the game play mechanics. Once you feel comfortable enough with all those aspects, jump right into a real exhibition game. You may need to adjust the difficulty (the default is “Pro”, which is the second lowest difficulty) at first. From there it’s just a matter of playing the game and getting used to everything until you feel comfortable enough to get into the serious game play.

Personally, I’m just playing MLB Today games and a franchise that I fantasy drafted at the moment. I’m waiting on the patch to be released, and (hopefully), fixes for roster editing so I can get an unlimited amount of prospects named. There should be a roster update around opening day as well that will be useful. Once that’s happened, I’ll start in with my Rockies franchise.

I am happy to say

I threw a 3 hit SO last night w/ Johan Santana on All Star against the Pads. I was pretty pumped about that. I did give up 1 of those hits in the 9th too, and 1 hit to the pitcher, Correia. So far, MLB 2K10 is much better than any other baseball game I’ve played, but I have never played The Show.
