Rockies 11, Diamondbacks 1; Seth Smith leads Rox in romp over Snakes
Okay, I don't want to go overboard with a meaningless exhibition, but there are a couple of valuable things we can learn from these games with regard to the regular season, so here are some quick takeaways from today's game:
- Troy Tulowitzki, Todd Helton, Dexter Fowler, Brad Hawpe and Clint Barmes are completely extraneous and the Rockies should probably trade them all for prospects now while their value is still high.
- Seth Smith will win the 2010 NL MVP trophy. He'd be on pace for 500 hits and 162 HR's if this game counted.
- This goes against front office wisdom a little, but I think most fans would agree that the Rockies starting outfield this year should be Smith, Chris Frey and Jay Payton.
- Jorge De La Rosa will win the Cy Young if the team ever decides to move him into the starting rotation.
- Jason Hammel isn't going to do too badly himself.
- The Rockies bullpen is awesome.
WOOT!! THIS ONE IS A ROCKIES WINNER!

Totally. They didn’t even show up, why should we bother keeping them around. Can’t have selfish players!

I don't know about Hammel.
He’s got the worst ERA on the team by a factor of infinity.
I noticed that Hammel got the win
He didn’t pitch but 2 innings. Do they score wins differently during spring training instead of the usual 5 innings pitched? Is this because they announced who was going to pitch and how many innings? Or is it the official scorekeepers decision?
Is it Opening Day yet??? See you at Coors.
Yeah
Since hardly anyone goes 5 in Spring Training, they will give the W to the starter if he leaves with the lead and the team keeps it.

think about it this way, if he only allows one run in all of his starts,
that’s only 33 for the season.
Heh
He did a good job. Couple flubs I noticed, but overall pretty good. He’ll be a decent replacement for Kingery once I get used to it!

3 sentences on DOD not enough for you?
or the fact that Epstein and Cashman are ahead of him on the list?
Iron Maiden? Excellent!
Give DOD Cashman's or Epstein's checkbook
and put him anywhere on the East Coast & the rankings change a lot.
They ought to split such lists into “GM’s of Rich Teams” and “GMs of
Other Teams”, because such different skills are required.
I do agree about Friedman, though. To do what the Rays have done
in that division on their payroll is astounding. That’s why they’re my
favorite AL team.
New decade, new result: time for a Rockies' division championship.
if we were allowed to trade GMs
I would swap DOD for Friedman or Zduriencik
and that’s it.

I don’t understand how these franchises have convinced the mainstream media that having a wallet as fat as Pablo Sandavol isn’t an enormous advantage.

me too, but maybe not in the same way you're thinking of
This one’s pretty bad in that it seems to be holding GM’s up to different standards without much consistency. Take the rankings of Zduriencik and Rizzo for instance, both are relatively new at their jobs with their respective teams, both came from very successful stints at procuring the amateur talent for their past teams (the Brewers and D-backs, respectively) and both have done solid jobs of adding talent to the teams they’ve been put in charge of. Yet one ranks #6 and one #23. Ned Colletti and Bill Smith have regularly led their teams to the playoffs or at least contention, but O’Dowd and Kenny Williams get ranked much higher with similar results in the same divisions. I do think O’Dowd’s done a better job than Colletti of late, but not that much better to be twenty spots up on him.
Colletti?

I know you're joking, but
You aren’t going to find a GM that doesn’t make mistakes, either big or small, except for Zduriencik who is revered above all GM’s as perfect and without flaw, so you have to grade the rest of them on how well they fix their mistakes and take advantage of the opportunities they have. Colletti’s done a very good job of this for the Dodgers, he signed Andruw and Pierre, but he’s figured out how to get rid of them (okay, so the backlogging of deferred contracts will likely bite them at some point, but still, he got out of his messes). Even this winter, you can’t really blame him for the team taking a step or two backwards because he’s having to work with the salary cards he’s been dealt by the McCourt divorce, and he still has kept the Dodgers primed for playoff wild card contention. You compare that organization with the Cubs and Mets, and I don’t know if you get many baseball execs who’d swap LA’s personnel for their’s, yet Colletti ranks below both Hendry and Minaya.
Marchman complains about the Carlos Santana for Casey Blake trade, but the Dodgers won two straight division titles at least in part because of that trade (I doubt they win in 2009 with DeWitt, and they would have had a harder time holding off Arizona in 2008) and to me this is the exact scenario where it’s okay to deal a top prospect. We’re still talking about potential MLB value from Santana, while Blake’s added five and a half wins to the Dodgers in a year and a half. To me, the trade looked worse at the time than it does in retrospect. Anyway, enough defending a hated rival…
LOLLETTI DROOLZ
I'll agree that 2010 has made his job harder
For the record, I don’t really disagree enough to be like UR WRONG, but I just don’t see Colletti as being…that good…
So much of the dodgers’ talent has come from the Dodger’s amateur scouts, as so much of their position player talent came before Colletti. From there, it was just “hey let’s play the best guys”, kind of no-brainer in that regard. I mean, Kemp, Loney, Martin, Billingsley…you get the idea, those guys were all drafted before he took his time in office, yet gets credited for them. I mean, not trading them away was a good idea. Ethier was a Dan Evans acquisition, Lowe, Kent, Drew, all DePodesta signings. Furcal seemed to me to be a “ok who’s the best SS available….Furcal. Let’s sign that one”. Blake may look like a good thing as far as straight up value goes or whatever we want to call it, but with Martin on a seeming decline, I think they’ll be missing Santana in a year or so.
I dunno. It’s not that he’s the dumbest GM on the planet or whatever, everyone has their Andruw Jones’ and Juan Pierre’s, but it seems most of his decisions have been “Oh look our prospects are doing well, time to promote them!” or “who’s good and available”, very obvious types of choices given some semblance of financial limitations (ie not being the mets or yankees). Manny fell into his lap, Hudson was just “who can offer $1M more than anyone else” or whatever.
Credit for grabbing Wolf, Kuroda, Saito, and guys along those lines.

that said, I don't think he's worse than Hendry and Minaya, I should make that clear
He’s much closer to 15 in my mind.

Minaya had aplan that lasted a year.
After that he became like Steve Phillips… Someone who gives fantasy managers a bad name.
what a freaking joke
“Despite the fact that Baseball America, a very reputable publication, has ranked O’Dowd as Executive of the Year, and we ourselves feel that O’Dowd deserves more credit than he gets, we’re gonna go ahead and fellate Cashman and Epstein some more, because we’re nothing like Baseball America”
Seriously, all they had to say was “Lol hampton/neagle, humidor, NEXT”?!

Too busy at work to post today
and it’s very frowned upon, but it’s nice to know I can get a complete review
of the day’s events on the Row. In a weird way, but it works.
Besides Smith’s heroics & Omar’s resurrection, what I like the most
from this is 2 innings of scoreless, WALKLESS relief from Morales.
With Betancourt & Street available, add a quality LH reliever in Morales,
and the Rox bullpen becomes amazing. Anything from Corpas & later
Buchholz would be gravy.
I likes Morales as a reliever last year & he was sort of pushed into
that role by necessity. Now that he’s got more experience with it,
I hope he’s used there a lot & that today’s showing becomes the
norm. I’m starting to get excited about this team.

Great point about Frankie, he looked pretty smooth.
Great sign.

Do you plan to travel somewhere to see Major League games this year?
Not many will be played in Houston.

I'm just
in town overnight and tomorrow. I have an interview in the Galleria area. I don’t know what I will be doing over the summer yet, as it is determined by having a job or going to grad school.

BTW
Did I miss something? Why will there not be many games in Houston this year?

I read
his comment as saying not many MLB games will be played in Houston. I know the Rox won’t play there much but why would the Astros not?

because they really suck
and you can hardly qualify the Astros as a Major League team
Iron Maiden? Excellent!
I would suspect
it was a dig at the Astros.
as in, they’re not major league
I can haz NL West title?

We actually did really well considering how many poeple were not there or were only there for part of the game
I think the over/under was set at like 1229.5 or somethingl like that. I thought we would have gone over that but I didn’t realize that so many people who usually comment like crazy wouldn’t be there because they had other thing to attend to.
If this game was at 7 instead of 1 we would have approached 2000 comments.

The Spilly game just makes the most sense too
1) It was a long game (14 innings) and an exciting game.
2) It was recent enough so that most of the really regular commenters we have now were here for it.
3) It was against a team we were battling with for a playoff spot late in the season.

it was pretty clear
his increased offensive production coincided with his change of batting stance. Considering he only had 5 homers a week into june last year, i think clubbing 40 this season is realistic.
