Spring Training Games #2 and #3: Ubaldo Jimenez vs Trevor Reckling; Jeff Francis vs. Matt Cain

This place is going to be a madhouse as we follow two games at once. Ubaldo Jimenez, Greg Smith, Matt Daley, Matt Reynolds and the king of ragball himself, Matt Belisle, are expected to get work in Tempe, while Jeff Francis, Esmil Rogers, Chaz Roe, Justin Speier and Jimmy Gobble go up against the Giants in Scottsdale.
I'm not expecting much from Francis today, in fact, I'm sort of expecting him to get hit pretty hard as he works the kinks out of his delivery after missing a year. Much as I'd like to beat the Giants, I'm just not sure it's going to happen, especially at half strength, and of course, it doesn't really matter either way. The same's true in Tempe as Jimenez faces the Angels. Getting the win's not nearly as important as getting a read on where the pitchers are at in their preparation for the season.
The Rockies AAA pitching depth also comes into prominence today, Smith and Rogers are two important sixth starter options, with Roe an intriguing wild card in that category, while Reynolds, Speier and Gobble could all potentially appear out of the Rockies bullpen at some point this year. Reynolds in particular merits watching as a potential Randy Flores replacement, or he could take Franklin Morales' projected role should the latter have to take over closing or set-up duties for Huston Street or Rafael Betancourt early in the season if either of the two start April on the DL.

or you could just go to yesterday's box score (linked in the wrap)
and click the “today” link in the upper right corner and both games would pop up in the scoreboard, that way you don’t have to play around with the URL’s other than just copying and pasting.
I actually ended up doing just that, except using yesterday's game day instead of yesterday's box.

Since much of the playing time in ST games is done by 2nd, 3rd & even 4th
stringers (especially in split-squad games), does ST test an organization’s
depth at the top levels of the system? If so, the Rox should be ST wonders,

going down in two weeks to take a vacation from my real job and work contract for one of my old teammates evaluating the Cactus league for an NL East Team. Great to go on vacation do what you love and get paid too.

I agree.
I think he will be fine. I have read some I think on the Post or a Blog somewhere. He seems to be on the right track.
I know minors are not the majors
but he’s a higher average hitter than his mlb career would suggest
at least fantasy analysts are suggesting a .270 avg this year.

Another aspect of the game that has changed
catchers leaving masks on to protect on collisions. I feel it obstructs views. But the full helmets they use in youth HS and college has warranted this change. Not a fan

Honestly...
I think the media is just reporting more on quakes – you know the whole sensationalism and such. Normally, they probably wouldn’t have reported a 6.5 that didn’t do any damage. But because there have been a couple lately, they are making it sound like this never happens and it’s the end of the world, blah blah blah.
Yet another reason I hate the media.
well, an earthquake that kills 200k people followed a month later by the strongest quake in 50 years is big news

And scientists have been predicting the Haiti quake anyway…it’s not like it was surprising.
It won't surprise me.
Remember when there were some celebrity deaths? They started searching finding the most obscure celebrities that died to report on, etc.
There are hundreds of earthquakes every day, but not many 6.5s on any day
That said, it’s not surprising that there’s several strong ones bunched together, as that much movement at one end of the plate has got to put stress on the other end….

I’ve never heard of Jeff Kindel or Mike Paulk before. Have they always been in the Rockies system, or are they NRIs that I hadn’t heard of before?

both were 1B’s at Tulsa last season, both have been in the organization for several years now.
Sorry, I just opened the thread and I don't have time to read the whole thing.
Are they just minor league roster filler types, or do they have a legit shot of ever playing in the majors? They seem kind of old.
and yeah, both were originally drafted by the Rockies.
Actually if you do a search here in the search box, you’ll note 158 front page stories have talked about or mentioned Jeff Kindel, and 176 have talked about Paulk, so sorry you missed all of that. At any rate, both are unlikely to be MLB players at this point.
