Rockies 5, Padres 4: Jorge De La Rosa and Jason Hammel stymie Padres for fifth victory

This was a well-pitched game until the eighth inning. Jorge De La Rosa held his composure, surrendered one hit, and struck out two in three innings of ball. Jason Hammel followed him and allowed a solo homer, the only real blemish in his outing. He also struck out two.

Matt Daley had a bit of trouble in the eighth when he allowed three runs on three hits and a balk. He had an additional balk, but that came after the scoring was done.

Miguel Olivo provided the offensive firepower this afternoon with a two-run homer in the second inning and an RBI double later in the game. Troy Tulowitzki had two hits, while Jay Payton and Jonathan Herrera drove in the other two runs.

Thinking about Daley and some of our top prospects got me to wondering:

Was Daley very high on anybody’s radar entering ST last year? I don’t follow the system as closely as some, but I don’t recall hearing very much about him until he was in the majors.

He was completely off the radar

Except by me, that is :)

One Spring inning....

…shouldn’t wipe out what this kid did last year for the Rox. Without him throwing strikes and bridging the gap to the late innings 57 times, we may not have gotten a look at the playoffs – where he threw a scoreless inning. He needs to be a big part of the pen this year, eating up innings!

Nice! It's the Dodgers television broadcast.

Vin Scully is the man and Sandy Koufax agrees with me.

One of the privileges of living in LA is the massive amount of Vin Scully games I get to see.

I always watch the home broadcast of rockies games on MLB.tv

I enjoy hearing all the different broadcasters from around the NL. That douchebag with the mets is by far my least favorite although Ralph Kiner is hilarious. The NL west is really strong overall. Mike Krukow with SF and Mark Grant with SD are great color commentary guys. It’s cool to hear Tony Gwynn whenever he’s in the booth. Mark Grace is very entertaining although i think he was the first to accuse Manny Corpas of doctoring the baseball.

No offense to Scully or anything.

But why is everybody so high on him? He’s rather bland to me… runs away

by CentralCaliRox on Mar 8, 2010 11:32 PM MST up reply actions

I actually agree

I’ve never really liked him since I heard him last year in ST on a Rox-Dodgers game and he was literally reading out the Baseball Prospectus paragraphs for every Rockie as they came up, even to the point of passing their opinions off as his own.

It's like when you are young

and your grandpa would tell you war stories about battles in theaters he never even saw. You aren’t going to interrupt, he always answers your questions in detail, and it’s just a special experience.

That’s Vin Scully to me. I’m sitting cross-legged on the floor, and every game he’s telling me a baseball story.

Iron Maiden? Excellent!

you nailed it. I love Scully

I ran into him in an elevator once, and he actually had an aura

And smelled classy. I know. Call me weird.

Never heard anyone that didn't like Scully

I grew up in LA listening to him and Ross Porter as a kid as I drifted off to sleep. Fond memories…..

Is it Opening Day yet??? See you at Coors.
Who wants an NL West Title?.....This Guy!

Part if Scully's appeal to me is that he's timeless

Since he’s been doing it so long you could be watching a game between the Rockies and the Dodgers and think you’re watching a game from 50 years ago. It’s awesome.
