Saturday Rockpile: Rockies hoping for more wins inside NL West, more

Photo

Armstrong: Winning West? Hey, it's a start - The Denver Post
The Rockies finally having a winning record inside the division. The Last time this happened? Last April, when the Rockies took 2 out of 3 from Arizona to open the season. How about a couple more to give yourself some cushion, eh guys?

Also inside the article, Armstrong goes into detail about Carlos Gonzalez's hard-luck day yesterday. CarGo crushed a couple of balls to centerfield, but both were outs. Armstrong refers to one of them as a "laser." LAZOR would be more appropriate.

Kiszla: Jimenez, De La Rosa brothers with arms - The Denver Post
"The Brothers K" have gotten off to a terrific start in 2010. Vinny Castilla saw it coming, apparently.

Burger joint tasty tip O' cap to Todd Helton - The Denver Post
The No. 17 Burger Shack is a new addition to Coors Field this season. Todd Helton was apparently very humbled by the decision to name the restaurant after him. I have GOT to try one of those burgers.

Also, Renck states that Huston Street will begin throwing in five days, and that Jeff Francis experienced a bit of a setback in his attempt to get back on the field, as his throwing session that was originally scheduled for yesterday was scrapped due to soreness underneath his left armpit.

Headley's seeing-eye single only smudge on De La Rosa - The Denver Post
One of these days, it's going to happen...

San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies - April 10, 2010 | MLB.com Preview
MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has his preview for tonight's game, which features good stuff on Jason Hammel. Also, he mentions the Rockies' efforts to improve their approach at the plate, in an attempt to cut down on strikeouts. The Rox struck out just five times yesterday, while racking up seven runs on twelve hits.

The Brothers K

I like that. Maybe his friendship with Ubaldo will convince De La Rosa to take a bit of a hometown discount to stay here after this year. I’m really starting to love De La Rosa. It took me a while, as I was at his first game for us. It was miserable, and we kept making fun of him and complaining about him. Those scars don’t heal easily, but he went from “hate” at the beginning of ’08, to “meh” in late ’08, to “decent” in mid ’09, to “sweet” in late ’09, to “totally awesome” now.

I was at that game too.

I was very upset. I wanted to bring a sign that said “We want Ramon back”

Middle of last year completely

His 0-6 peripherals weren’t honestly that much worse than his 16-3 stretch.
Funny note: his start yesterday was apparently worth $1.6million and 0.4 WAR.

This might not be the best place for this

but has anyone noticed if they are doing the Coca-Cola Value Pack this year?

Francis comeback

I was talking to an Orthopedic surgeon friend of mine ysterday and his feelings are that maybe the original surgery is fine , but the problem is an underlining problem that was aggravated by the surgery and rehab…Any thoughts?

That has been my understanding

At the very least, the surgery weakened his arm.

It is not unreasonable at all to see side effects during the rehab due to his lack of activity long term. This is why surgeries like his are so unpredictable, and often career killers.

Welcome !

Are you really from Boston? I have a brother that lives in Framingham.
No, it doesn"t sound good about Francis…guess we’ll just have to wait and see !

Okay tell us everything..

How did your wife like it? Where did you sit? Did you get any autographs? I thought about you often during the game.

by butterfly on Apr 10, 2010 10:37 AM MDT up reply actions

Oh, it was GREAT

We sat in section 246, basically the far end of LF outfield club, with a couple of dear friends. No autographs, no foul balls.

Our biggest concerns were stuff like “how early do we have to show up for handicapped parking”, “will her oxygen tanks lasts throughout the day and the drive both ways”, and “how long will the line be for garlic fries”. We ask the last one every time.

Everything went very smoothly, so we know she can go to games, we just have to build lots of extra time in. The handicapped parking fills very early, and we can’t really start walking out until the stadium’s mostly empty. But she had an absolute blast. She said the night before the game that with Yorvit gone, she needs a new player, and she though JLDR would be a great candidate. Shades of Annie Savoy?

Oh My,

you brought tears to my eyes…for joy of course! Considering all you both have been through, it is amazing that things are so much better. You can enjoy a game, be in the sunshine and even have garlic fries !! Fantastic! I ’ll still keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Maybe she is JLDR ’s good luck charm. :)

by butterfly on Apr 10, 2010 11:28 AM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, yesterday changed everything

I’m hoping to get her to 8-10 games this season, and our only concession is essentially that they will all have to be weekend games, because of all the extra time built in, but it was one of our landmark steps, at least emotionally.

To be fair, the game wiped her out and she had to nap multiple times yesterday evening. But stamina is just something that takes longer to come back. She’s miles from where she was even three months ago.

Is kiszla serious?

First he says that we need to trade Hawpe or The Player for another “frontline pitcher” for us to have a chance to even stay in the race to the World Series. (A notion which is very frustrating to me after all the Rockies have proven), Now he says that we have the next Schilling and Randy Johnson? Gosh that man makes me want to do terrible things. How does he still have a job?

Their plan is just to give him a couple of appearances below before putting him on the big league club.

Really, we’re just one step closer to seeing him up here. We may even see him for the New York series.
