Friday Rockpile: Rockies take show on the road to NL East territory
Rockies miss out on series sweep, falling to Mets - The Denver Post
Home sweet home? Coors Field has been like a candy store for the Rockies in the Jim Tracy era. As shaky as they played at times during this past homestand, they won their series against the Padres and Mets. Their series record in LoDo since Tracy assumed command last May? 17-3 with one split.
Beimel bumps Rogers off Rockies' roster - The Denver Post
Plenty of rosters moves being made today, as we already know. Joe Beimel is up, Esmil Rogers is down. Eric Young Jr. was prepared to make the trip to Atlanta, but both CarGo and Brad Hawpe look like they're a go for the upcoming series.
Dexter Fowler's grandparents will watch their grandson play in the majors for the first time this weekend.
Paige: Helton is Rockies' knight, but only at night - The Denver Post
I think Woody Paige is wondering why Todd Helton hasn't been playing in day games, but it's more than likely that he's also asking if Helton is a vampire or Batman or something.

Didn't the local paper axe the Nationals beat reporter last year too?
"Because I am a Rockie." - Todd
Yes, but...
….it was actually the Moonies-owned Washington Times, which eliminated its entire sports section. It wasn’t like they just cut a baseball writer.

Just wondering if that helped with the reach out to the blog, plus it probably doesn’t hurt to reach out to fans more directly with that team.

Helt Day Games
I assume the reason Helton is not playing in day games (without looking at Woody’s blah blah blah) is because Tracy wants to give his back a rest after late night games? And because most day games happen on Sundays, when Helton rests.
Helton was supposed to be in the lineup yesterday, but was scratched with "flu-like symptoms"
Co-Captain of the Greg Lovers Club (along with Silverblood)
Also, Jim Tracy has said that Helton played in 151 games last year and that's too many
I take that to mean he’ll play about 130-140 games this year, which means missing about a game a week. Picking day games after night games makes the lineup more predictable so Helton and Giambi can prepare. I’d expect the trend to continue, flu or not, unless Giambi goes through a truly prolonged slump.

Todd Helton has appeared in 7 games, the Rockies have played 9. Assuming he plays tonight and tomorrow (and also assuming he’s over his flu), that would be missing one game a week.
An interesting question is how many of those 130-140 games does Tracy expect Helton to not start but pinch hit in, verses not play in at all. It’d be nice if someone in the press asked him that question. Is his back enough of a concern that he shouldn’t even be swinging the bat for a day a week?
At what point do we consider Giambi to be in a prolonged slump?
Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything. ~Toby Harrah, 1983
I admit I'm already concerned but he's only had 14 PAs so far.
Then again, I also wasn’t on board with bringing him back either.
"Because I am a Rockie." - Todd
0-for-8 with 6 walks does not a prolonged slump make. When he’s 0-for-20 or 1-for-20 you have a slump. No need to panic — yet.
BTW, I’m still not sure Giambi has a place on a 25-man NL roster and I questioned re-signing him last offseason, but even so I’m not willing to call the experiment a failure after just 9 games out of 162.
so he's got a BA of zero and an OBP of .428? Interesting.

I still can't find the corresponding move that allowed Beimel to added to the 40 man roster.
I still assume Buchholz was transferred to the 60-day DL.
According to Jim Armstrong last night, Rogers is going down but they haven't announced it yet.

He was signed to an ML contract
Definitely wasn’t on the 40-man on opening day.
Oddly enough, right now there are 41 players listed on the 40-man roster at http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=col
I can only assume Buchholz will be put on the 60-day DL prior to tonight’s game or already has been and it’s not been announced. Tracy Ringolsby mentioned this awhile ago: http://www.insidetherockies.com/2010/03/31/colorado-rockies-have-roster-room/

He's giving another data point to the TINSTAAPP crowd.
The Giants had five of the first 51 picks in the draft in 2007, and all five (well, maybe except for the one they used to get Freddy Sanchez) have seen their progress hit a wall these past couple of seasons.
there is no such thing as a pitching prospect
one of the BP writers, I think Clay Davenport, coined it about ten years ago now.
I believe it was last year you said the Giants farm system was very top heavy
with the loss of Alderson, the troubles of Bumgarner, and the likely callup of Posey in the next 2 months, where do you see their system in the next couple of years? Are there some potential breakthrough candidates you have your eye on?
Do you think these setbacks will force the Giants to draft more college level players with potentially lower upside in the 2010 draft?
Co-Captain of the Greg Lovers Club (along with Silverblood)
I failed to include the legal troubles of Angel Villalona as well
Co-Captain of the Greg Lovers Club (along with Silverblood)
I really think that system's taken significant hits in the last year or so
and while might have been underrated heading into last season, the opposite’s true right now. After Posey moves up, I would think the Rockies, Padres and likely the Dodgers have better systems, right now, I think CO and SD have solid cases.
As to how it will effect the Giants draft strategy, I really wouldn’t think it would have much impact. They like taking high risk, high reward players almost exclusively, and I think it’s given them some solid pitchers (Cain, Lincecum, Wilson, Sanchez, Runzler), but it’s been murder on their depth and position player quality.
And out of the NL altogether...
though he can still kill us when the Blue Jays come to town in June.

1) Fish don’t have wings
