FLORIDA MARLINS (9-7, 1.5 GB, 2ND NL EAST)
Friday-Sunday: 3-game series @ Coors Field
Rockies' 2009 record against the Marlins: 2-4
In both series, the Rockies lost the first two games and won the last. Jason Hammel started each story and took the losses as well. Jorge De La Rosa went 1-1 in his two starts against the Fish. It was a shame that DLR picked up that loss, because he went eight strong innings and struck out 12. The offense didn't have it that day in May, managing only one run. Aaron Cook also went 1-1. He couldn't finish the third inning in the August contest, allowing seven runs.
Marlins' last two series: 2-1 series victory the Phillies; 1-2 series loss to the Astros
The Marlins ran into Roy Halladay last Friday and only managed two runs off of him in eight innings. Once the bullpen had to close this one out, the Marlins scored four runs but came up short in the 6-8 loss. Ricky Noalsco tamed the Phillies the next night in a complete game, allowing only a run. It helped that the Marlins faced the ageless Jamie Moyer. Nate Robertson handled the Phillies for 6 1/3 innings, scattering four hits, on Sunday. Cole Hamels handled the Marlins offense, allowing only two runs. But two runs were enough to win the game.
Chris Volstad was in line for the win to start the series against the Astros, but reliever Tim Wood allowed four runs over the seventh and eighth inning to blow the game. On Wednesday, the Marlins put up four runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, but Josh Johnson and Burke Badenhop allowed four more runs to lose 4-5. Yesterday, Anibal Sanchez held the Astros to one run over 6 2/3 innings, while the bullpen didn't allow a hit over the last 2 1/3 innings of the game.
