Marlins 4, Rockies 1: Offense Somnambulant Against Nolasco
Ricky Nolasco and the Florida Marlins took game one of today's doubleheader (or in other words, the game seen by almost nobody) 4-1. Nolasco (2-0) went eight innings and struck out nine, giving up only an Ian Stewart RBI single in the fourth (seven hits total). Otherwise, it was Operation Shutdown for the Rockies' offense, with Chris Iannetta putting out a particularly poor effort with three punchouts. The Fish were also helped by solo home runs from Dan Uggla and Brett Carroll early on.
Greg Smith (1-2) took the loss, going five innings and giving up four runs on eight hits. Which isn't terrible from your fifth starter, but the offense wasn't up to the task today. Manny Corpas provided a bright note for Colorado though, pitching three scoreless, hitless innings of relief--continuing his nice start to 2010.
A depressing graph:
Played Well in a Losing Effort: Corpas (.089 WPA), Todd Helton (.088)
Not So Much: G. Smith (-.144), Carlos Gonzalez (-.104), Iannetta (-.098)

Seems like all the Ianetta lovers are going to be wrong again..
How long is it going to take before people realize this guy is potential and nothing more?

You realise that sentence makes no sense?
Either he’s got potential to be good, so he might be, or he’s not, in which case he won’t. In Ianetta’s case, we already KNOW he can be (very) good over a season, so in my eyes he’s beyond potential, and he’s a good, if raw, player in a slump, in April, who’se not getting to play every game.
Potential means he has the tools. That doesn't mean he can put the tools into play when the Rox need him.
I have no idea what keeps him from being a reliable performer, but something does. I don’t think it’s work ethic because I’ve never heard anyone say anything of the sort. It’s probably just mental. The last few seasons when we’ve needed a catcher to rely on, the Rox went to Torrealba. True, CDI will probably have a couple moments this year, but come playoff time, I have this feeling it will be Olivo that gets the call.

This will certainly be interesting to watch
If it happens for a third time, it’s officially a trend. I love Iannetta, but doubt has crept in slightly. It’s still too small of a sample this spring to be completely worried, though. And check 2008. Iannetta led all catchers in wOBA and was just a shade behind McCann in OPS. It isn’t that he’s never put it together before, he just hasn’t been able to reproduce it consistently

to expand on this
his issue last year was hitting too many flyballs. Yet this year, he’s 6th in MLB (30+PA) at 58%. That won’t ever get it done
