Rockies 10, Mariners 4: Colorado Ends Spring on a High Note
With their 10-4 win today against the Seattle Mariners in Albuquerque the Colorado Rockies ended 2010 Cactus League play with a 17-13-3 record. Jorge De La Rosa pitched five shutout innings to get the win (3-1), striking out five and giving up five hits.
The big story, though, was the prodigious power the Rockies showed off in this game. Colorado smacked four home runs (Jason Giambi, Brad Hawpe, Ian Stewart, Brad Eldred), two triples (Jay Payton, Johnathan Herrera), and four doubles (Carlos Gonzalez, Seth Smith, Miguel Olivo, Clint Barmes) as part of their 16 hit onslaught. Hawpe, Payton, Smith, and Stewart all had multi-hit games. Let's hope that the offensive prowess carries over to Miller Park in Milwaukee on Monday afternoon.
With the notable exception of Manuel Corpas, who gave up three runs in his one inning, the pitching (especially Team Bed and Bath Coordinator Joe Beimel) looked very solid in an extreme hitting environment. The Rockies still have yet to announce the final member of their bullpen, but if I were in charge I'd be very comfortable putting Beimel in that role.
Also of note is that the Rockies continued their sloppy defense, making two errors (including Barmes' 7th of the spring). Hopefully that doesn't carry over into the regular season.
It was a fairly slow game thread to end Spring Training. Thanks to those who participated!

Esmil Rogers
takes the final bullpen spot…not Beimel. Weird.

Frazier was right.
It makes sense. They’re still not certain Beimel is ready, and they wanted someone who could pitch several innings.

I don't think its a bad decision...give Rogers a chance to see what Opening Day feels like.

I think he looks fine.
But it must be pointed out that:
1. The Rockies organization has a better picture of what Beimel looks like right now.
2. They know more about what to expect out of him by putting him out that to start, based upon more factors than the game appearances we have seen.
They may have good reasons for giving him some extra time.

I couldn't participate because I was at the game wth my family....
It was a very fun afternoon in ABQ.
On an unrelated note….does anyone know which station will broadcast the Rockies on the radio in Albuquerque?

I asked their program director and they are not broadcasting the rockies or broncos.

opening day weather has a 30%-60% chance of precipitation
according to Intellicast, by using both the extended and hourly weather report.
In case that figures in to any sick day plans. I was very disappointed before to have a game postponement on a fake sick day in years past.

I certainly wasn't worried about rain outs.
I actually enjoy rainy baseball. Though I’d assume they’d close the dome.

Rogers?
Really? Nothing against Esmil, but really?

Everybody worried about Esmil Rogers being on the Opening Day roster needs a reality check. If he pitches in a single game that isn’t a 5+-run blowout in either direction, it’s only because a starting pitcher got hurt. So there are three scenarios under which we will see him, and two of them are bad, but most of them are unlikely, and we’ll see Joe Beimel in a week anyway, so chill.

I'm not yet certain if there will be a Rowbot Radio for Monday.
Both Andrew and I have had some crazy stuff happen this weekend. We’ll see what happens.
Also, Tim Redding did not receive an offer for his services, and has been assigned to AAA.

Can we close those gates on I-25
that they normally use in the event of blizzards? Or at least post a couple state patrolmen in case he tries something sneaky?
This may be the first time I can recall that I wish our AAA affiliate was located farther away from Coors Field…
What the crap?
Wonder if he’ll find his way back quickly, or at least to another organization.

He said he intends to retire if he doesn't find a job.

This made me smile
One way or another, if he doesn’t find a job it seems like retirement would be the end result.
awww, this is sad..
we are lacking a Speier :(

Don't like it
I am not a big fan of Speier but he has been better this spring than Corpas. Corpas badly needs a wake up call and they should have sent him to the Springs to open this season.
they have both been inconsistent

lol, the Rockies put Scott Rice on their roster.
That has to be a mistake by the transactions folks.

Woot! Tulsa and Modesto's rosters look pretty much set. Sky Sox, Tourists, and the short season and Dominican teams are still unset.

Fascinating.
What happened to Delta Cleary? Parker Frazier? Also, I’m surprise Nolan Arenado isn’t headed there. This means more investigating for me tonight.

Beimel
I hope these references to Bed, Bath, and Beyond are only positive, because I just went there for the first time and loved it.
Didn't expect Rogers to get a spot
Does anyone think if he isn’t bad and if Corpas is, that Beimel will take Corpas’s spot and not Rogers? Seems like Tracy is putting a big emphasis on long relief.
Impossible not to have positive thoughts.
I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.
Maybe, though the possibility of converting Corpas to long relief himself should also be thrown around.
by Greg Stanwood on Apr 3, 2010 9:28 PM MDT up reply actions
Has Corpas even been a starter in the minors
or have the experience of pitching at least 2-3 innings at a time?
Impossible not to have positive thoughts.
I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.
He has pitched 2 innings at the MLB level several times.
I don’t believe he has any recent experience starting, but I’ll bet he could get to at least 3 innings.
