Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Renck just spoke with Jim Tracy, who said Seth Smith will get the start in place of Fowler tomorrow afternoon. The reason from Renck: "Fowler is still growing as a left-handed hitter. And Smith is really good."

Dexter will start Tuesday and Wednesday against Randy Wolf and Doug Davis, both lefties. Jim Tracy is playing matchups rather than deferring to the "A" lineup on Opening Day.

That might not be noteworthy, except Clint Hurdle supposedly lost respect in the clubhouse by doing the same thing with Ian Stewart and Clint Barmes last season.

Meh, probably the right move.

The best things in life are Tulo dingers, Ubaldo strikeouts, and Iannetta BBs.

Agreed

But it raises two questions for me.
1- Will Dexter sit most days we face RHP? If so, he’ll never truly develop his LH swing and it should be scrapped.
2-How does the team see this any differently than Hurdle last season?

Agreed on 1. I’m still not sure it was a good idea to have him skip AAA last year where he could have honed that lefty swing.
As for 2, I can’t imagine the players getting upset about Tracy playing the platoons, when it makes sense. I think Hurdle’s problems were deeper than just too much lineup tinkering.

Interesting

Probably a good move though. I hope this doesn’t mean it will be a straight up platoon…..

This troubles me somewhat.

Welp, we’ll have to see how it works out. And if Dex handles it well..:(

It makes me happy

Even beyond the “I love Seth Smith and think he should be starting” aspect of it. It shows that Tracy has enough faith in Smith that he’s willing to play him in the opener. It shows that he thinks that the team has 4 starting-caliber outfielders and he’s not overlooking Smith.

I'm pretty OK with this. I also think Dex should scrap the SH stuff and just go righty all the time.

I brought this up last year on PR

felt Fowler should scrap the LH swing. Sounds like he still has issues. Making a guy a switch later in life is very problematic. Many have tried, few have succeeded.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Apr 4, 2010 3:42 PM MDT reply actions

I don't have a problem with him continuing to switch hit

IF they still allow him good opportunities to improve in games. Taking him out on Opening Day just tells me it could be a common occurrence for him to sit against righties, at which point he really might as well focus on hitting right-handed.

I don't like this one bit

I think what Tracy did well last year was normalizing the chaos ( And I don’t think many would disagree with that). He brought consistent roles to the team. I don’t think it is going to be a good move to start this platoon business so early. Even if Dex has problem with his swing, he will need game situations to help with his development. I also don’t like Tracy’s trend of over management from last years post season. He needs to stick with his strong suit, and normalize this line-up.

Maybe this is Tracy's way of hinting he shouldn't SH

It would not be the first time a manager did this. What i look for is consistency, So if Tracy does this every time with Smith and Fowler OK. What Hurdle was doing was punishing guys on a game by game basis. if Barmes went 0-4 Stewart started the next day. Tulo swings at a bad pitch he gets benched.

We have 5 really good OF players. And Dex has looked sometimes feeble from the left side. And like someone else said I would not be surprised to see him come in for defense late. I also think you will see a pretty regular platoon between Ianetta and Oliva.

by Roxfan24 on Apr 4, 2010 4:07 PM MDT reply actions

I'm confused on how a platoon would work between Iannetta and Olivo

Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.

I'm going to go out on a limb.

An say Olivo catches DLR every time this season. I expect Chris to catch 100-105 games and Olivo to catch 55-60. Unless Chris struggles then they split more evenly. If Chris doesn’t get it this year i don’t view him as anything more than a future back up anywhere.

by Roxfan24 on Apr 4, 2010 10:32 PM MDT up reply actions

Me and somebody else said this woul happen yesteda..

I predicted Smith would be the permanent starter in the near future, and I guess I can deal with Jim playing the splits.. good because I do NOT like Dexter batting lefty :/

by CentralCaliRox on Apr 4, 2010 5:43 PM MDT reply actions

It's tricky because

we really have no idea how well Fowler would do as a righty against a righty. We all love his righty swing and granted it’s a lot better than his left handed one, but there’s not too much data on him in R vs R matchups. I guess they’d have to go back to his college stats….

I would read more into this move for Smith than Fowler

Remember, they signed Giambi to be the main pinch hitter, so they obviously had some bigger role in mind for Smith, who excelled there last year. I don’t think it’s a demotion for Fowler, but more or less a vote of confidence in Smith telling him that they believe he’s a major league caliber starter in the outfield.

I don’t think Fowler will lose respect. Anybody who’s watched Smith as a major league hitter knows he’s much more advanced than Fowler, and that he still needs growth in switch hitting. There are 5 starting outfielders in this club, and we have to find starts for them all. Fowler should know this (he is after all a smart ballplayer), and that he still needs to work on his lefty swing because he just looked overmatched at times last year.

Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

by bballrox4717 on Apr 4, 2010 8:54 PM MDT reply actions

Or maybe

It’s because Smith hit .352 in ST vs Fowler’s .229. Fowler’s lucky he’s getting any chance to start at this point. I’d like to see what Seth could do as an every day player early, then go to the platoon later on if needed.

I wouldn't overreact about this yet...

the team is facing Yovani Gallardo for the sake of Pete. He’s pretty tough customer to get anything off of. I think it is the right move tomorrow. Plus the team will be facing 3 lefties the next three games. So Dex will still get his game time. He will probably play the two after against righties (Latos and Garland) so don’t get too upset… yet.

I got nothing.

Good problem to have

Too many starting caliber outfielders – Jim Tracy must be loving all his shiny toys!

by amoeba on Apr 4, 2010 11:02 PM MDT reply actions

I've suspected Smith's playing time may come more from Dex/Cargo than Hawpe.

Having two CF makes it tougher to justify sitting Smith (plus having Giambi on the bench now).

Either way, I’m wearing my Dex jersey in honor of him today.
