May Flowers - Purple Row Cares Has More To Give
Nearly a year has passed since PurpleRowCares was created and in that time this community of Rockies fans has donated $100 to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial and $100 to the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver. We have received our next check from CafePress, and have another $100 to donate. Help us decide which worthy charity to support. A suggestion was made that we make a donation in honor of Kelli McGregor, these were two of the charities he was a part of:
- The Rockies Foundation was formed in 1991 as a public charitable organization with emphasis toward underprivileged and at-risk youth through programs for youth baseball, drug- and alcohol-abuse awareness and prevention, and education and literacy.
- The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Help us pick a charity! And remember, you can still get your Purple Row merchandise and help support whatever charity we choose the next time around!
Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

I have a suggestion if we choose the Rockies Foundation..
I’m not sure how complicated it would be, but I was reading on their website about player autographs and it says:
If you are interested in an authentic autograph, please join Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Brad Hawpe in their efforts to raise money for charity. Please send a check for $25 (per autograph) made payable to the Colorado Rockies Foundation. The Foundation supports programs focusing on youth baseball and softball, education and literacy, and drug and alcohol abuse awareness.
We could pay $75 for Hawpe, Tulo and Helton to autograph a Purple Row Cares t-shirt and then auction it off on ebay. We could then use the money earned from the auction to donate to another charitable cause.

Will they actually autograph items sent int, or is generally just a check that gets sent and they autograph
some predetermined item (photo, whatever)? I think we’d want to make sure that it would work before doing it.
I like the idea, but I’d want to make sure there is interest in the autographed shirts first, as I suspect it would be mostly people who frequent PR who would be interested in them (I doubt your average collector would be).
I have sent in two pictures to Tulo to sign
They were my own (actually one was the pic on my avatar thingee), so my understanding is they will autograph whatever it is you send, as long as you pay to have it shipped back….
my Guess is if you contact someone at the community desk they would be happy to answer questions and help this idea get off the ground.
And probably would think it’s a darn good idea and possibly help.
I would easy pay 50 bucks for an autographed Row shirt….Easy.
And if our fantasy baseball auction is any indicator there are plenty of deep pockets here who love to over spend!!!

It looks like signed baseballs are the best sellers on ebay..
Holly, were you asking if they signed checks? Because I have a few blank ones they could autograph.
I have some new baseballs we could send. We could even throw in a Purple Row shirt to sweeten the pot.

very cool idea (the autograph idea)
My guess would be that it would generate more money than the original investment, I’d say double it at least…
As an econ teacher I very much like this multiplier effect.
And certainly any Colo. Rockies sponsored charity would be a worthy benefactor.

I like this autograph shirt idea alot. That's my vote !
In leadership, sometimes it comes strictly down to courage. We have to have courage within our organiztion today. It takes courage to be a Colorado Rockie.

I like the autograph idea if they will autograph a sent in item. If not I would suggest the Cystic Fibrosis charity
as KM was deeply involved because of his close relationship with Michael McMorris, son of Jerry.

This is a really neat idea,
It’s an opprotunity to get a great item to undoubtedly raise more money to give back! I would love to take part and help out if there is anything I can do!
You will never move forward by looking back....

Thanks..
We always need help getting the word out about PR Cares and we could use some more creative shirt designs.

the “i spilly you” boy briefs…I’m gonna have to get some of these!
In other news – I offered to donate my shot of “the purple row” a while back – let me know if you are interested and would be happy to send you a high res file to use.

Great idea
I’m sure there would be interest in a shirt or ball signed by those three.

I have a cousin who has cystic fibrosis
So I would have to vote for that one, but they are both very worthy organizations
The money we make from the autographs..
Could go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. That way we’re making donations to both of Kelli McGregor’s charities.

Another option to consider is..
This charity raffle to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of MetroDenver. Winner gets a luxury condo or $1 million. http://tinyurl.com/3×5nmyz
A luxury condo would make a nice venue for our Rowbbbq’s. Then when we’re not partying in it we could put it up for lease and donate the income from that. That would make for some sweet donations!

The autograph idea
is great. Please try to do this, especially with a purple row item if possible.

I just spoke with the Rockies..
Well actually it was a nice employee named Kathy, and she suggested we send three seperate balls; one for each player. I told her how we were planning on auctioning the balls at ebay and then using the money from that to donate to another charity. She said that was perfectly fine and that organizations auction off autographed Rockies items all the time.
Since this seems to be the consensus and we have the blessing from the Rockies, it looks like we’re a go on this project.

Just to clarify my intentions..
Kathy mentioned that it could take up to 8 weeks to get the autographs back. Since I have some new balls they could be sent right away; then auction them off with a PR shirt.
Otherwise it would take 2 weeks to get the shirts and 8 weeks for the autographs, 10 weeks before we’re ready to sell them and shirts don’t sell as well as balls from what I’ve seen.
What does the group think about these two options?

Here's my only thought on the balls...
Anyone can send them a ball and get it autographed with a $25 donation…why would someone pay >$25 for it on eBay? Most of the recently sold Helton baseballs are going for around $15…
On the other hand, even if you only get $15 each for 3 baseballs, you will have still made a $75 donation, and have $45 to donate. I think I’ve talked myself into thinking this is a good idea.

so what would be of more
value than a ball as an autographed item we could use?

If there's enough interest among those on the Row, autographed PR shirts might go for more.
I doubt collectors would care about them, but if enough Rowbots wanted them, they could probably get us more than balls. I don’t know.
Is it possible to have two items autographed with a single donation? If so, we could do a ball and a shirt, and auction them separately. That way we hedge our bets both ways.
And I wouldn’t mind waiting an additional two weeks to do that. The only question is how do we account for the cost of the shirts?
The person I spoke to. .
Said only one item per autograph. I think autographed PR shirts might be nice. Maybe we should do a poll?

Sure.
I think something like “Would you be interested in bidding on an autographed PR shirt?” would be good. And make sure people are actually serious, not just hypothetical.
I added a poll..
to see which option people would prefer. We might have enough money in the budget to throw in a PR shirt with an autographed baseball, but an autographed PR shirt would be cool too. So we’ll let the masses decide, Let them eat cake!

easy peasy solution
minimum bid is 30 bucks. explain what is happening and why it would be ok to bid above 25 bucks and most people would be ok with it.
its charity for cryin’ out loud, yeah I guess you could get it cheaper yourself but that’s not really the point.
For the Helton ball you got 50 from me for sure….so ya’all better be prepared to go over that

Don't know if you saw this...
https://secure.mlb.com/col/community/winsforkids.jsp
Short story: $25 donation to Wins for Kids (the charity that Tulo is growing his mullet for) gets a special Tulo cap with a fake mullet attached in the back in July. Auction that…it might be rare enough to get a significant premium!!

Those hats are nice..
but we will have to pay $25 for the signatures so a hat and a sig would be pricey.

That's a good point.
I’m discussing , not arguing here. I want that to be clear, because on the internet its easy sometimes to confuse the 2, and I have a lot of respect for what you have been doing with this, Charlie!
A couple of thoughts…
First, you might get interest in this item, even if not autographed, as many Rockies fans outside the FSNRM broadcast area might not even know about it.
Second, as I figured out slowly before, you don’t have to “cover” the cost of your original donations. If you take $25 (or more) of the money you’ve raised, and make a charitable donation with it, that’s not a loss (even if you get nothing in return). If you get an autograph or a hat, or any sort of premium, and sell that for anything over 0, you can make more of a donation than you would have otherwise. So if you donate $25 to the Rockies Foundation, get an autographed ball and sell it for $1, you don’t have a $24 loss, you can now make 2 charitable donations worth $26! Does that make sense?

What if PR Cares was about more than just t-shirts?
Holly and I were discussing this after a game recently. We were trying to come up with some ideas for a service project that could be done. We’re open to ideas.
One of the things that was discussed was perhaps we could do a service project on a get-together like the Rowbbbq’s. Something like helping at a foodbank for a couple of hours.
Another idea we had involved doing things individually and making it part of something bigger. Have you ever heard of a warm and fuzzy jar? It’s when a person does something good for another person like helping an old lady cross the road. Then we place a purple fuzzy in a jar. Once the jar is filled it looks something like this:

We could even dedicate the jar to someone like Kelli McGregor. Anyway I look forward to your feedback.

Here's a thought that might bring together our two interests...
As some of you know, I occasionally volunteer my time to do some fundraising for men’s ministries at my church, by pouring beer at Coors Field during Rockies games. I pour beer, they send a check to my parish. I could see if there is a group that is already set up with Aramark that could turn our volunteer time into PRC donations. If people wanted to pour beer, they’d have to get certified by Aramark, but they use volunteers in almost all the concesion stands, so it wouldn’t have to be specifically that. If there was a lot of interest, we might even approach Aramark about having a small stand fully staffed by PRC volunteers for a small number of games. Is PRC legally organized in any way? Aramark might require some sort of proof of non-profit status…
Even people who can’t give up most of a day to work a game could participate by hosting pre-game brunch, or post-game beers/homebrew….
Just a suggestion, feel free to reject with no hard feelings. I know it’s hard to get solid commitments to stuff like this.
Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.

If PRC
is legally organized, my bosses might have something to say about Charlie using “Purple Row” without their authorization.
