Tuesday Rockpile: Kaz is Back, Matzek Dominates in Debut

Over the ten plus season the Dan O'Dowd regime has been in charge, every adjective imaginable has been used to describe the front office.  Brilliant.  Lost.  Intelligent.  Incompetent.  And on and on we go.  I think we can officially say now that one word absolutely describes the regime without contest:  nostalgic.

O'Dowd has brought fan favorite Vinny Castilla back as a player, then as a coach.  Don Baylor and Walt Weiss have returned to the organization as coaches.  Notable Rocktober contributors Matt Herges and Josh Fogg we brought back last season.  This spring saw the return of Justin Speier, an effective reliever during the Hampton/Neagle era.  Seven years ago, they used a 30th round pick to bring in the son of the man who hit Coors Field's first home run.

And now, Kazuo Matsui is back with the club.  Aside from Castilla's swan song in 2004, none of the above moves amounted to much, and the front office expects the same from bringing Kaz back.

"We are looking to do something similar to last time. Put him in the minor leagues and see where he's at. There is no guarantee of a call-up," O'Dowd said. "We all remember the magic of 2007. But I also know that this is 2010." - via Troy E. Renck, Denver Post

IF Matsui's back problems go away, IF Barmes falls more off a cliff and gets injured and IF Matsui somehow rediscovers a batting stroke that seemed lost two seasons ago, we may see Kaz at Coors before September.  Otherwise, probably not.

Also in the above linked story, Renck pulled a quote from Dan O'Dowd on Chris Iannetta:

"He has addressed his swing mechanics, shown a great attitude and done everything we have asked. It's getting close (to a decision)," O'Dowd said.

I can only hope the decision regards only the time of the callup.

I'm sure Jim Armstrong was one of those kids who woke his parents up at 5am on Christmas Day.  The one-year anniversary of Jim Tracy's promotion to manager is Saturday, but Armstrong is already reflecting on Tracy's first year.

More after the jump.  They are FP-worthy links, I just ran out of space.

Star-divide

Loosely tied to the previous story, Thomas Harding writes that Troy Tulowitzki loves swinging at the first pitch.  This is not a new revelation.  For his career, he's hitting .394 with a 1.064 OPS on a pitcher's first offering.  He is just 7-for-24 this season on such occasions, but his home run Sunday came on the first pitch.  And interesting quote from Tulo:

"I think I've had criticism since I've been here swinging at the first pitch, but I know I'm very successful swinging at the first pitch," -Harding

I'm sure whoever posts a Pebble Report later today will have more to say about this, but for those whose eyes glaze over at each of PR's PRs, here you go:

Matzek dominates in his pro debut | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball
Tyler Matzek struck out five and allowed one hit over five innings in his Minor League debut as Asheville beat Greensboro, 3-2.  His fastball touched 97mph and the first round pick was pulled after 80 pitches.  Sheng-An Kuo served up a 2-run home run in the ninth to rob Matzek of his first professional victory.

Quotes:

"I'm still going to get a little anxious, but I'm going to have some confidence behind me knowing that I executed the pitches I wanted to pitch...I'll get more consistent with that, it should be fun....I'll probably just end up here (in Asheville), they told me in extended that there were no future goals.  We'll see when the next step comes, but I just want to win, help this team to win." - via Danny Wild, MLB.com

Lastly, here's a graph comparing Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez.

It's worth mentioning that Kaz's BABIP

has been extraordinarily low this season (.164), and was 25 points (.285) off his career average (.310) last season.

Can’t argue with the nostalgic label though. Believing that a change of scenery might help someone is one thing, but believe that returning to the site of former glory will renew a player is beyond wishful thinking.

He's hitting barely any liners and tons of ground balls.

He just hasn’t really hit well since 2007-2008.

"Because I am a Rockie." - Todd

by phishbate on May 25, 2010 8:46 AM MDT up reply actions

Not true

His 2010 line drives are way down, but even in ’08 (as good of a WAR year as Barmes has ever had) his line drives were near his career mark (~21%) and his grounders and fly balls were normal for his career. Even last year, he only suffered a less than 2% drop in line drives from his career norm. His grounders and fly balls were normal, but his BABIP was down.

His infield fly ball percentage is 20% this year, after being no higher than 13.1% in the last three years. That’s the worst of it, but it seems like an unsustainably high number unless he’s injured.

He’ll never be as good as ‘07 because he’s not going to get the percentage of infield hits that he did that year. Nevertheless, his defense isn’t awful and he’s been a good hitter as recently as 2008. Even in ’09, his bat was worth more than Barmes (although both were negative according to Fangraphs).

by Muzia on May 25, 2010 9:05 AM MDT up reply actions

Fair enough

I guess I shouldn’t say your take on Matsui is “not true.” He’s been awful this year, and was bad last year. But all that amounts to is one bad season (after accumulating 1.9 WAR in 96 games) and a rough start. There’s nuances in his numbers that point to a ton of bad luck and shifting from being a speedy slap hitter to needing to make more solid contact (which hasn’t happened).I guess we’ll see that in AM?RMN’s R&L.

by deacs on May 25, 2010 10:06 AM MDT up reply actions

I was probably overstating how bad he was and how long the decline has been happening.

Looking at the numbers again it doesn’t seem quite as stark until this year. And clearly the organization thinks there’s a chance of fixing whatever the issue is.

He doesn’t deserve all of the scorn that I (and some others) have heaped on him in the first month or so, but when the offense isn’t/wasn’t clicking the weakest bat in the lineup is going to take the most heat. Hopefully you can put some knowledge to his (offensive) value.

OBP

I’m not sure that you explicitly have done this but your sentiments indicate that you’d qualify Olivo’s career OBP as terrible (relative to Iannetta). Using OBP as a measure of productivity, Barmes (‘09-’10) also qualifies for that category.

depends on the level of domination

If he goes all Strasburg on the South Atlantic League, it would be worth a shift to Modesto. I wouldn’t deny us a Kershaw rise if he was earning it. But I would be okay with this season in Asheville.

Do you want a guy in the majors on a pitch count and still learning, or do you want someone a bit older and more durable? Don’t you get more pre-free agency value if you wait a bit?

definitely possible there

But we reportedly also had an agreement to acquire Kelly Shoppach. We traded Eric Byrnes for Larry Bigbie to flip Bigbie for Shoppach. After Byrnes was traded, Boston backed out and we were stuck with Bigbie. At least, that’s how I remember it.

I assumed that was the plan when they optioned him

Do you think they would send Greg Smith down over Esmil?

Quitter's People United: Member #19

by airforcefoo on May 25, 2010 12:21 PM MDT up reply actions

Just a guess.

Both are essentially long relievers, Rogers is more likely to make a transition to the bullpen long term, and Smith on the team makes 3 lefties. But that’s not to say Rogers isn’t really a similarly likely departure.

Yes, it probably was “the plan”, but making plans in terms of transactions don’t often work out the way you think. They wanted to option Smith down after his last start for a temporary solution, but they ended up not bothering to. Gotta play it day by day at a time, and we don’t know if their plans still involve Daley or not.

by Greg Stanwood on May 25, 2010 12:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Has he been

pitching down in the Springs, if so how has he done. I like the idea of removing Smith and replacing him with Daley but I doubt it happens unless Daley has been doing well in AAA.

He's only gotten into two games.

0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K

Daley was struggling, but he was optioned do0wn more due to convenience in necessity than due to intentional demotion. He is more valuable to the team than having two long relievers or three lefties is.

by Greg Stanwood on May 25, 2010 12:26 PM MDT up reply actions

true

I just didn’t know how he was actually performing. I knew they sent him out primarily because they could and he could use some more work

Could you go through and confirm the number of roster spaces allotted to each minor league team (excluding rehab guys)? I think some of the A ball clubs have larger roster sizes (35-40?) but I’m not sure.

For the record, this is how it works.

AAA and AA have 24 spots.

It's easy to be concerned about a player like Paul Phillips, who truly does seem to provide good intangibles to the team.

That said, two notes:

1. Paul Phillips has been designated for assignment six times in his career before this one. Number of times claimed? Zero.
2. If Paul Phillips IS claimed, it really isn’t that big of a loss.
