Know Your Foe #17: Dodgers stumble out of Chicago and into Coors Field

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (26-21, 2 GB, 2nd NL WEST)

2010 Record vs. Rockies: 2-1

The Dodgers welcomed the Rockies into Dodger Stadium during the weekend of May 7-9 after losing a series to Milwaukee and promptly took 2 of 3 from the Rockies (who were in the midst of a tough west coast swing which saw them face the Giants, Padres, and Dodgers in one trip), despite being outscored 13-8. Los Angeles took game one of the series after getting to Esmil Rogers early and Matt Daley late. The Rockies' bats performed well in that game and that carried over to game two, which saw Colorado blank the Dodgers 8-0 behind a strong pitching performance by rookie Jhoulys Chacin and one of many rough outings that Charlie Haeger had. In this one, he allowed two hits, three walks, and five runs and did not even record an out. Things turned around nicely for the Dodgers, who became the only team to beat Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010 the next day, beating the Rockies 2-0 behind a great pitching performance by Clayton Kershaw. He pitched eight innings of two-hit ball while striking out nine. This particular game seemed to finally kickstart the Dodgers' season; they were 13-17 entering the contest, and proceeded to win eight straight and 11 out of 12 after the big victory over baseball's best pitcher. Offensively, the Dodgers were led by the now-injured Andre Ethier, who continued his onslaught against Colorado's pitching with five hits in the first two games. However, he went hitless in the finale. Jamey Carroll managed four hits, and Russell Martin had three - one of which was a home run off of Matt Daley in the final game of the series. It was the Dodgers' only long ball in the three games.

Recent Results: 2-1 series victory vs. Detroit; 1-2 series loss at Chicago (NL)

I don’t know about the rest of you, but there’s a little hop in my step every time we play the Dodgers that isn’t there for any other team on our schedule. Not that I don’t loathe the rest of the teams in the division, but when the Dodgers are on the docket I just feel like there’s a bit more buzz about the series. Maybe it’s their franchise history, or the fact that they’ve always owned us, or the fact that this has been a rivalry since Andres Galarraga spiked Jody Reed and touched off a pair of brawls at Mile High in 1993. But these series are always great fun to anticipate.

Of course they stop being fun when we score four runs in three games at Chavez Ravine and stuff.

I wish that was the case for the people that actually play the games against them.

All jokes aside, I feel unusually optimistic about this series.

I'm going

to the game Tomorrow for sure, maybe again on Sunday. When I was trying to buy tickets to tomorrow’s game there were not two seats together in the Pavilion left. This should be a fun series to go to, especially if the crowds are big and into the game.

2 quick and otherwise meaningless notes...

First, we need to get 2 of these 3 games.

Second, Manny needs a haircut.

Frequently

it happens that when I go to games by myself I find that at least one person around me is as into the game as I am and therefore they can talk baseball rather than heckle the nearest fielder or opposing fan.

Nobody likes hecklers either.

One of the reasons I don’t like going to games, people shouting all over. They’re distracting me from watching the game more than they’re distracting who they’re heckling.

It’s not so bad, though, since I usually don’t bother going to my seat anyway. I hang out at the bullpen.
