Saturday Rockpile: Francis fails to adjust, Buchholz injures back, more
Krieger: Rockies' Tracy didn't yank Francis soon enough - The Denver Post
In the "Hindsight is 20/20" department, Dave Krieger claims that Jim Tracy's leash on Jeff Francis was too long last night. I wasn't able to watch the game, so I didn't see whether or not Francis was really "gassed" after allowing the Dodgers to get within one run with only one out in the sixth. However, as I'm watching a condensed version of the game, it seems that the Dodgers were beginning to see the ball very well, and that Francis just failed to make adjustments from his approach earlier in the game, which they clearly figured out. In any case, had the Rockies offense not disappeared after the fourth inning, it really wouldn't have mattered. The bats lost that game, plain and simple.
Back stiffness halts Buchholz's rehab | ColoradoRockies.com: News
This is obviously not real good news for the Rockies. However, maybe it helps explain Taylor's recent struggles. He carries a 7.94 ERA in Colorado Springs, and his last few outings have been nothing short of disastrous. The news is better on Franklin Morales, who continues to build shoulder strength and is seeing is velocity climb back up toward where it should be. Now, command...gotta get that command going.

Couple of Thoughts
1. I think Francis should have been lifted earlier as well. He was starting to elevate (a sure sign of fatique) and he is the kind of guy that when that happend he is done. He is a control and location pitcher without overpowering stuff. When he loses that he gets rocked.
2. The Rockies seem to show body language against the Dodgers that suggests they feel they are not going to win. Seems they posses fear and a lack of mental toughness.
3. The Barmes K after failing to get a bunt down was huge and boxed them in. His failure to execute, compounded by fielding issues and a Mendoza line BA screams of the need for an upgrade at that position. This guy is a ultility player starting for a pennant contender.

Indeed
1. Francis and Cook are the same way — they get fatigued/start missing and it’s hitsz city time for the other team. Francis should have been pulled after the walk and first double. I get frustrated by managers who will stick with ‘their plan’ even if it ends up costing them the ballgame f.×. Francis needs to get one out so I can go with this matchup or I want the pitcher to stay in to ph for him the next inning etc…especially against the Dogears. Manage to win this ballgame!
2. Rox this year so far seem incapable of coming back from a deficit from the 5/6th inning on, not just the Dogs (defeatist attitude). Apparently the pressure is too great…but they can score if the game is tied or we have the lead!
3. Barmes…I feel for the guy but…what’s the point, we know he’s not going anywhere.

Gotta agree with the first point...
Good to awful over the course of a game is a cliff for Francis (and Cook). When they’re done, they’re DONE with gusto.
I also have to wonder, though, what the real alternative to Barmes would be. As hard as I am on the guy (I am apparently already legendary for that around here), Mora doesn’t give me the warm fuzzy when playing 2B, and Lil’ EY still probably isn’t quite ready to start full time at the Major League level even after he comes off the DL. Does Matsui have a second Rockies run in him that was as good as the first? Good question. He’ll be 35 in October and wasn’t precisely tearing it up with the Lastros this season. Maybe the change of scenery will be good for him. He did seem to like playing here…

I stayed up to watch that?!
I should have been in bed at ten anyway, trying to kick this little sickness. But I didn’t, I wanted to see what would happen - and was quite disappointed. I agree with PinchHitLance -- the Rockies themselves don’t seem to think they can win against the Dodgers, which could become a problem.

Vicente Padilla got in trouble last night
Police responded to allegations against Padilla at the Ritz Carlton at 4am this morning. No other details have been announced. Press conference at 4 MT.
Eric Stephen pointed out that Padilla was due to throw a bullpen session today, so even if Padilla was innocent of all allegations, the mere fact that he was awake at four is pretty irresponsible.

I am assuming the Rockies’ broadcast will be simulcast on MLB Network, as the Dodgers are on a local station tonight.
Or is tonight a night broadcast by MLB Network announcers?
by Eric Stephen on May 29, 2010 3:38 PM MDT up reply actions
The MLB Network announcers primarily are only on the Thursday night broadcasts.
They will likely be carrying the Rockies feed tonight. (And when MLB Network carries the Rockies at Giants game on Monday afternoon, they will likely have the Giants TV feed.)
Lineups:
1. Carlos Gonzalez, CF
2. Seth Smith, LF
3. Todd Helton, 1B
4. Troy Tulowitzki, SS
5. Brad Hawpe, RF
6. Miguel Olivo, C
7. Ian Stewart, 3B
8. Clint Barmes, 2B
9. Aaron Cook, P

5. James Loney, 1B
6. Casey Blake, 3B
7. Blake DeWitt, 2B
8. A.J. Ellis, C
9. Hiroki Kuroda, P
Which is itself
practically a surprise!
