While the pitching matchup's great, and any Ubaldo night is a good night, let's not forget one subplot of this evening's contest: tonight should mark the first time that 2005 #7 overall draft pick Troy Tulowitzki faces off against 2005 #6 overall draft pick Ricky Romero. Toronto was for a couple of years widely panned for the Romero pick, but unlike our own widely panned first round selection of the following year, he's rebounded nicely to add 5.2 WAR for the Jays (FanGraphs version). That's still quite a bit short of Tulo's 13.6, but certainly respectable.
Tonight let's hope the gap spreads a bit,

Toronto’s next interleague series starts on Monday in San Diego. It would be a scheduling nightmare to make up some games later in the year.

They all got made up in double headers except one of the Philly games.
As far as I know that one hasn’t been scheduled. They might decide not to play it unless it would matter to playoff berths.
There are five or six common off days where the Rockies and Phillies could make up the game in Denver.
But the Phillies do not have too many trips out west remaining, which is leaving the end of the season “if necessary” make-up as the best scenario at this point. (The Rockies do have a July visit to Philadelphia, but the Phillies have already picked up three games with the Blue Jays/Phillies series in two weeks being moved to Philadelphia because of the upcoming G20 summit in Toronto. Why would we give Philadelphia another home game?)
Hopefully the weather will cooperate this weekend, or there could be some problems making up these games later in the season.

Speaking of our 2006 draft choice,
Greg Reynolds couldn’t make it through his 2 IP rehab start and was pulled with two outs in the second and runners on second and third. He allowed one run pending the two inherited runners.
Looks like just two runs against Reynolds against the Springfield Cardinals.
Hopefully, Greg Reynolds can somehow get back on track. (By the way, the new Tulsa ballpark [OneOK Field] is quite impressive, with all of the ballpark’s quirky features.)

I noticed that FOXRM is not planning to carry the Rockies at Twins matinee Thursday morning.
But Rockies fans will likely be able to see the game on Thursday morning, since MLB Network is planning to carry Thursday’s game (courtesy of the Twins FSN North feed). Let’s hope that blackout does not kick in.

I never went to the school
I headed to the coast to CPSUSLO instead. However my HS girlfriend loved it and did very well in the track program there – for awhile she had a school record in shotput.
As for the town of Reno – it isn’t as “Nevada-y” as Vegas – there is a large ranching community there and of course you are minutes from one of the most beautiful lakes in the world – not to mention hte best skiing on Earth (all my time in Vail, A-Basin, Copper, and WP never compared to Reno) so basically it is easy to avoid the casino scene if you want to. At the same time it is right there if you want it as well :p
I myself am partial to the Cali side of the border – Truckee is my town – but the region is wonderful to live in (Like Wyoming!)

Best guess is that it’s probably cheaper for the City University of New York to mass produce them at one time than to do it for each part of the graduating year. So that means Fall 09, Spring 10, and Summer 10 all come together as one.

Renck’s post at 5pm today:
Rockies manager Jim Tracy says his team is at the crossroads of its season.
"We are," said Tracy. "We’re kind of at a crossroads point in our season right now. There’s roughly about a month and a few days between now and the all-star break. … If we’re six games back, if we’re four games back, if we’re two games back … we’re in position to win.
"Or there’s the other side of the coin to where you can allow a season to get away from you between now and the all-star break. We might as well embrace the fact. … It’s reality. You deal in reality in life and it’s right there in front of us. So what are we going to do about it? We’ll find out."
Let’s all hope the Rockies deal with realities and get out of their current funk. Otherwise, I’m afraid the season will be a lost one.

Crap.
I really hope they get this game in tonight. I was planning on going into work tomorrow, but if there’s a double header, I might be tempted not to.
It looks that the rain cell that went over the ballpark should be close to wrapping up.
After this cell moves out, weather should look good for awhile.
It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow...so sadly probably no DH tomorrow :(

It did, but over time, it ends up meaning nothing.
I often (foolishly) forget to account for the fact that if it isn’t causing precipitation, it doesn’t show up on radar, therefore cloud formations that can become rainstorms don’t show up.

Barmes had 28 RBIs and an OPS+ of 56.
Here’s an example where we’re giving him credit for driving in runs even though he’s been pretty much awful all season.
Cool that he might drive in 90 in the 8th hole… but I’ll continue to argue it’s the offense’s fault more than Barmes being a great 8th hole hitter.

yes, he's done very well with RISP (120 sOPS+)
especially considering what he has done without RISP.

As far as I know, the ump can either scratch or suspend it. Not certain though.

For the curious
Rule 4.10
© If a game is called, it is a regulation game:
(1) If five innings have been completed;
(2) If the home team has scored more runs in four or four and a fraction half-innings than the visiting team has scored in five completed half-innings;
(3) If the home team scores one or more runs in its half of the fifth inning to tie the score.
(d) If a regulation game is called with the score tied, it shall become a suspended game. See Rule 4.12.
(e) If a game is called before it has become a regulation game, the umpire shall declare it "No Game."
So the way I read that, before five innings it’s “No Game” regardless of the score. After 5 innings and tied it’s suspended.

I've tried reasoning with people over there before.
(Not so much baseball, but other sports.) It does not go well. Invariable someone resorts to personal attacks, or religious attacks (when I’ve been trying to talk BYU sports), etc. It’s pretty futile.
Those boards are largely unmoderated too.

Funny thing
I grew up watching AL baseball. Used the think the NL was quaint for batting the pitcher and all that. Now that I’ve been watching NL baseball for about 10 years, I find AL baseball almost boring to watch late in the game. The NL game is definitely better.
AL fans really need to take in more NL games. This is why I wish they played reverse rules in interleague (DH in NL stadiums, no DH in AL stadiums).
I have a similar story
I used to argue with nl fans against the validity of the DH being a fan of an AL team long before Colorado had a team. Now I’m a huge fan of the p hitting it makes the game so more strategic and interesting
The realization for me was
that a large part of baseball strategy, from roster construction to limited substitution, is balancing offense and defense. The DH completely removes that from the spot where it’s impact is the greatest on the game, thus gutting a large portion of strategy.
OTOH, I think it would be interesting to see a game resembling baseball where you had a 30-man roster and unlimited substitution. 9 specialist fielders, 9 specialist batters. Just call it arena baseball or something, not a sub-league of MLB.

I think most AL fans agree with that.
They don’t think they somehow just have better players. They just see pitchers hitting in the NL as weak.

From a road trip to see Cal Ripken’s last game at Yankee Stadium (which would have been his last game ever except for the rescheduling due to 9/11). 1-1 tie for a loooong time. Finally in the 15th inning, the umps ended the madness. Quite a long delay due to being the end of the season, and then they called the game. It was never resumed since it didn’t impact the playoffs.
We were cold as heck, but stayed dry.

It's hard to know how the humidtiy, temperature and condition of the mound
