Troy Tulowitzki to the DL

According to Tracy Ringolsby, Troy Tulowitzki has indeed broken his wrist and will be sent to the DL.

SS Chris Nelson is being called up from AAA Colorado Springs to take his roster spot.

So far this season, Tulo has posted a .306/.375/.502 line with 9HR, 34RBI. Tulo's .386 wOBA was 3rd best on the team, and his 2.3 WAR ranked 2nd.

Word is that Clint Barmes will slide to SS. I'd like to see Nelson take some reps there as well.

Ringolsby reports Tulowitzki will be out 6-8 weeks.

Troy Renck follows up to tell us that Tulowitzki's hamate bone has been broken, and that the DL stint may only be 4-6 weeks.

He also brings one big line from GM Dan O'Dowd:

O'Dowd admitted he will be looking at possible trades while Tulowitzki is out, to add infield depth.

Enjoy the scenery at Coors (I plan to), but postseason plans will be an exercise in futility now.

by free7694 on Jun 18, 2010 3:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Dude

If there’s one inalienable truth about the Rockies it….“as goes Tulo, so go the Rockies”.

I’d love to be proven wrong this time, but there’s a damn near 100% correlation between Tulo playing well and the Rockies doing well.

I’m still going to attend a bunch of games this year. My fandom never wavers. I’ll still watch nearly every game on TV.

But I am also a realist. I’ll be interested in who we can reasonably pick up in a trade, and it doesn’t have to be an infield bat, it just has to be a real bat, because we’re sorely missing those now….and one of the only ones we had just went on the shelf.

If we can get through this weekend better than 1-2, then I’ll begin to hope. I just don’t think even treading water for four weeks will work, because LA, SD, and SF can’t all be .500 teams for the next 4-6 weeks.

But that was before he started switching.

I think at this point in his career, it’s either keep the switch-hitting, or drop it permanently. I just don’t see any way they drop it for now and then try to bring it back. That just doesn’t make sense to me.

by holly96 on Jun 18, 2010 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Clearly the team still isn't at the point where they are ready to give up.

They still think he can maximize results/potential by being a switch hitter. Maybe they’ll get to the point where they change their mind, but think they’ve decided to give it a bit of time.

I frankly don’t have a problem with it at this point. We may not have a leadoff hitter at the moment, but outfield overall is not our problem right now.

Its a lot different for pro athletes

Tulo will be put on a bone stimulator next week that rapidly accellerates the healing process. With proper monitoring and evaluations Tulo will be ready to resume baseball activities much quicker than the everyday Joe.

Plus, I am sure there is a lot Tulo can do conditioning wise to keep in shape and keep his legs strong – remember he was a bit tender on that not too long ago – this gives him a chance to be able to defend full tilt once back.

Finally, I am sure he will be given a wrist guard when he comes back. If it is fitted well and causes him no discomfort, this can help him feel ready to contribute in all parts of the game very quickly after he is cleared to begin playing.

This all means his rehab time likely won’t be a long time and more dependant on how quickly he regains his swing and timing at the minor league levels.

Dammit I knew it, the hit he took looked horrible on TV.

Let Nelson introduce himself piece by piece.

I’m okay with a steady transition from one to the other.

I think this is exactly what it is.

I don’t think they’re saying, “Herrera is the starter for as long as Tulo as gone” but they’re also not saying, “Nelson is immediately the starter.” I suspect Nelson will get a start or two relatively soon, and depending on how it goes, he could take over.

2nd Time

This is the second time Troy has broken the hamate bone in his left hand. The first time he was out of the dirtbag lineup for six weeks.

Get well soon Tulo. The Rockies need you.

This is pretty funny:
Chris Nelson on getting called up: I was sleeping and I thought it was a dream. When they told me I was like oh snap! Nelson will back up

Also cool:
Rockies’ draft pick Russell Wilson taking infield with team. He can hang out wiith club for 72 hours.

So, is this the point where I drop a string of f-bombs for about 5 minutes?

Because I really, REALLY want to. Oh, if only the kids weren’t around.

I has a Prince Fielder-sized sad now.

Just heard the news

I think I’m gonna be sick.

My guarantee of a Rockies NL West title in 2010 still stands...

in fact, we’ve still got an excellent pitching staff (better when JDLR and Street return) and an underacheiving offensive unit that I believe will play up to their talent level in the next few weeks.

Does this hurt? Yes. But is it a horrific blow? Not hardly.

The Rockies will be fine.

I'm bummed, but not worried.

There’s still too much baseball left to be played. The road is just harder, not closed.

fiddling as the titanic sinks, or something along those lines.

We’ll own in 2011

The best things in life are Tulo dingers, Ubaldo strikeouts, and uh, yeah.

Ye of little faith and/or an overestimation of Tulo's impact on the Rockies' success.

Look on the bright side...

If Tulo is injured, he’ll probably get more ASG votes. See: Rollins, Jimmy.
