After losing 3 of 5 to bad ball clubs, I am just starting to get a bad feeling regarding this season. Nearly 60 games in now and the club finds ways to lose games they should not.
Tonights game may have brought new levels of frustration to me. There is simply no excuse for losing to a team that has Brian Moehler starting the game. Goodman actually made a great point tonight (which might be a miracle in itself)......the Rockies were unable to add on after taking the early lead. Helton's double play ball and subsequent strikeout into a double play were huge contributors to this. This thing started to feel a lot like the opener in the Arizona series by the middle innings. Even though there was a lead, I just got a bad feeling when opportunity after opportunity were wasted.
Tracy's decision to let Francis bat with 2 outs in the 6th was awful. With two men on, you have to take your shot there. Francis has shown a complete inability to go deep in the game. The 7th would have been worse if Pence does not hit his shot to the deepest part of the yard. Sure enough Francis gives up a run in an inning that he should never have been allowed to start. Who knows what happens if you go the bullpen with a two run lead.
As far as my overall bad vibe is concerned, it is apparent that we all greatly over estimated the contributions we were going to get from CDI and my man Ian "Russell Branyan" Stewart. It is also obvious that this team can not continue to carry two washed up 1st baseman. Giambi's first five months with Oakland last year look far more like the player that he is as compared to the month with the Rox. I know Eldred is not a true prospect but please get him up here - he can not do any worse than what we have going on now. At least when he connects, the ball goes far - plus he is a right handed power bat which is something we are woefully short on now. If Giambi didn't have that big game against Greinke maybe he would be gone already. I know Helton is a delicate subject but he is absolutely brutal to watch at the plate right now.
I also read a lot of Barmes criticism on the board. I am not a big Barmes guy but he does have a slew of RBI out of the bottom of the order. He is the least of our problems - Barmes is pretty much doing exactly what can be reasonably expected of him - if the other guys (besides Cargo, Tulo, and Olivo) were doing anything, we would not be complaining about Barmes.
I would like to think I am wrong here but I am not seeing any reason to believe that we are much better than the rest of the division. San Diego wins the type of games the Rox lose and are probably going to stick around, the Giants have Cain, the hippy, and the pothead and we can't beat the Dodgers. I do not see the Rox adding payroll - Paul Konerko would be a terrific rental (would cost us Rogers and Fowler though). The other problem with acquiring anybody is that the team now completely overvalues its prospects as the only untouchable minor leaguers should be Matzek and Friedrich so finding a match will be extremely difficult.
Thanks for letting me rant!!!
