I do not like baseball’s namby pamby refusal to do something to bring about some kind of truly competitive environment for all 30 teams, but within the rules as they stand, I would hope every owner would pour their heart and soul into winning the way Big Stein did.
Yes, he had the advantage of a great NY market, but he also made the NY market infinitely greater. He understood what too many owners (hi, Stan! How the Avs doing these days?) don’t these days – if you spend money, you’ll make money. Spending on talent means winning and playoffs and excitement. And winning and playoffs and excitement mean revenue. In NY, they means lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of revenue.

I’m on board with it probably more than most. But I do think there were a couple spots that could easily have been filled with FAs this offseason without blocking the progress of the young people.
Oh his worst days, Steinbrenner was the exact opposite of that approach. Smothering prospects (or flat out dealing them away) in the pursuit of the next big “win right now” guy at every position. The Yankees organization got better at that over the last few years (somebody earlier mentioned his suspension, which is probably a good point), and it’s also a balance I’m glad to say the Rockies have gotten better at lately, too. (Although, like the Avs, there are a couple spots I think they could make some moves without slowing down their internal development…)

I wanted to pick up on this. Spending money to make money certainly can be a winning strategy if you have the resource base to absorb said spending. Blind spending without will only get you into trouble, hello Cubs, hello Rangers. The Cubs are emerging from bankruptcy and the Rangers have filed partly because of this.
Wild spending on the top free agents can be an unmitigated disaster, because a team would have to hit a home run (pardon the pun) on the chemistry and make up to produce a winner that would result in the increased revenue base to pay for it. Spending forward, so to speak.
No team but the Yankees (and to a lesser degree the Red Sox) can really take on this strategy and absorb the misses without missing a beat. Where Steinbrenner’s genius comes into play is that not only did he buy a team with a tremendous existing resource base, but he infinitely increased that resource base to the point where spending forward will almost always pay off because it’s not really spending forward anymore because the organization can absorb any mistake and still produce a “net black” bottom line.

You're absolutely right
That’s the flip side of Steinbrenner’s understanding that the free agent spending could more than pay for itself, is that he had the luxury of being able to fail pretty frequently and still keep spending. We’ve seen one big reason why the strategy doesn’t work for the Rockies nearly as well – one Mike Hampton and you’re screwed for years. If that happens in the Bronx they shrug their shoulders, stick him on the DL for a few years and go out and sign CC Sabathia.
OTOH, part of the reason they can do that is because they’ve become a ridiculous money generating machine. Part of that owes to the base in place when he bought the team, part to the way he cashed in on it, and part on entirely new ways of generating revenues under his supervision.
I think he’s unlocked sources of revenue that are seriously unbalancing the game, because they are just so different in different markets. And as unfair as I know some people think it is to say that those teams shouldn’t be able to turn around and spend that money on players, if the sport wants a competitive sport that doesn’t end up where the NBA is already arriving, it is going to have to put some limits on that. As much as I hate the Yankees, I don’t blame George in particular for where things stand today, though.

Steinbrenner wasn’t an innovator within business, but he was an innovator within baseball. No one had tried, or thought of ways, to broaden the market for their team as he did (branding the history, Asia, YES). After that, all that matters to me is that the ways he did it are applicable to every other city on an equal or smaller scale.
In the end, does NY afford the Yankees more opportunities for revenue and appeal than any other clubs? Yes. But would anyone know about that yet if Steinbrenner hadn’t been innovative within baseball? Probably not.
Applying those concepts to baseball goes beyond savvy, but I’d concede it may not be concretely innovative.
With that...I will walk away as well...

Here’s how Windows 7 and Acrobat work for me. Adobe sends Acrobat update and I install. Acrobat breaks. I spend two hours cobbling together something that will produce a PDF, but Acrobat is still basically broken. Next update comes. I install and everything is hunky dory. Next update comes and Acrobat breaks again. Repeat until you throw your laptop out the window.

if you take the picture hyperlink and use that with the little picture thingie here it is not ok
reason being is that that picture is stored on a server somewhere, and it costs that website money to have the picture pulled from the server onto a website. But because it’s THEIR website, they don’t mind.
However if someone takes that link without using tinypic (etc), that website is paying to have the picture taken from the server and put on Purple Row.
