Know Your Foe #31: The Rockies Enter The Land of LeBron James
Florida Marlins (44-47, 9.5 GB, 4th NL East)
Last Series vs. Rockies: @ Coors Field, lost series 1-2.
Back in April, the Rockies played three games over two days against the Marlins. The first game of the series was rained out, but that didn't keep the Rockies down. Sure, they lost the first game 1-4, but Greg Smith was on the mound and gave up three of the four runs on two homers (a two-run shot by Dan Uggla). Aaron Cook threw a complete game in the second half of the double header and Miguel Olivo hit a three-run homer in the 8-1 victory. The next day, Jorge De La Rosa pitched five innings in the Rockies' 8-4 victory, but then didn't pitch again until July 9.
Last Two Series Results for Marlins: 2-2 series split with Arizona; 2-1 series victory over the Nationals
In the first game of the series, the D'Backs got to Anibal Sanchez for six runs in four innings. But the next day the Marlins got the better of Dan Haren as he allowed three runs compared to Ricky Nolasco's two. Tomorrow's starter Nate Robertson gave up five runs in six innings. On Saturday, Josh Johnson threw six shutout innings and will pitch Thursday in the final game of the series.

Thursday could be a fantastic matchup
or it could be real tough to watch.

Really only one massive disadvantage pitching wise in this series
and maybe not even that if JDLR can find some control.
April 9 Jorge plz.

Slim, but not none
If good Jorge shows up we are in pretty good shape. And if you look at who is rumored to be interested in Uggla we have the best pieces to offer up that could free him from Florida.

Wow, three out of four of the pitching matchups favor us
Really, if you set aside stuff and just look at actual performance
Francis compares favorably to Robertson (better walk ratio, much better HR allowed ratio).
Hammel compares favorably to Nolasco (walks a bit more, but check out HR allowed)
And given Josh Johnson’s greatness, it’s a good thing we’re not throwing one of our better performing pitchers against him, as it could end up being wasted effort.

I am ready to concede Thursday's game right now...
If good Jorge shows up, maybe we only loose 3 – 0… I like our chances in the first three though.
I will bet that Johnson strikes out at least 12 Rockies, issues no walks and gives up 3 singles, 2 of the infield hit or swinging bunt variety.
(reverse jinx… maybe)

I would be entirely satisfied with a 3-1 series.

The Rockies will...
Kick Johnsons A****pples and ruin his stats to prove that Ubbaldo is the better pitcher
People take many things way too serious.
I can get a rise out of you.
or you could say
That with the home field advantage, the first three games are a total tossup and Thursday is a loss

Yes, this is true
I mean, we have a .380 lifetime winning percentage in that stadium no matter what name they’re calling it this week.
Of course, we’ve often had, um….less than stellar stating pitching staffs generally, and now…we do not.

If only it were only about pitching matches
The offense is going to have to start producing more than 1 or 2 runs per game if they want to start winning games, let alone series.
Not to be mean, but I was just over at FishStripes...
and was VERY underwhelmed by the participation. I didn’t see a single post with at least 100 comments on the front page. I guess people in south Florida really do have better things to do than make silly comments on a sports blog… Even at work!
I hope there new stadium breathes some life into the fan base…

To be fair
Most of their game threads have at least 30 comments.
Guess they haven’t established the SDCat award over there yet.

Are among my favorites. Really appreciate the work involved, and the great information. I’d never have the time to find out all this stuff otherwise. Thanks PR!
Get your purple on.
I'd love to do more with it,
but I have so many commitments that I can only give the bare minimum to it.

Working on my predictions for this week
and Giambi starting today makes a ton of sense. He’s had pretty good success against Sanchez.
Also, looking ahead to the Phillies, Giambi & Mora both obviously have a ton more at bats against Halladay than anyone else, but they’ve both had pretty good success against him. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Giambi at first and Mora at third on Friday.
i wouldn't be completely pissed off with a split
but we really should win 3 out of 4

I'd be happy to split
because I think we are taking two of three from the Phils this weekend since we are missing Hamels and Halladay
And it's 4 games against the Phils, not 3

yeah cook v halladay
is that what the matchup was in may?
Yes it was, though Cook didn't necessarily outpitch Halladay
They had nearly identical lines. In fact, they had identical game scores.
