And I can’t watch because MLB.tv is blacked out, and my local FOX affiliate is showing As-ChiSox. Oh well.

The Rockies probably had more nationwide coverage when their game was on MLB Network last night, or will be on during tomorrow's TBS broadcast.
Then again, today’s game with the Rockies on FOX, will be on a good portion of the country, except New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and the Oakland/San Francisco Bay area. If you count “national coverage” and not being in the three largest markets and the Bay area, I guess that’s progress.

Ubaldo must be a stopper today
I see this as a VERY important game for Rockies to win to slow some of the negative vibes of this road trip. If not we could be 7 or 8 games behind Padres coming home after Monday.

I happened to notice on the Fox feed that I'm watching has the score box in the left corner is set to the HD parameters instead of the SD parameters normally on FSN.
The Comcast feed of the standard definition signal of this game crops off the score section, showing just the baserunners and the ball/strike count.
Is anyone noticing this in your area?
Normally the score box is in the standard definition dimensions, like on FSN.
I happened to notice this because the only other one that posts the corner score on their HD parameters is Channel SD4, who carries the Padres games.
YES!!!
I thought it was just my crappy tv.

Yes, this is correct.
If you have a television that can customize a new aspect ratio, you can kind of fool the score onto your screen, even if you don’t have HD.

Takes a lot of pitches though
He certainly didn’t seem to have any problem finding the zone against Kendrick, though. I can’t believe they would, but it makes me wonder if they were pitching around Dobbs and Schneider a little bit. I really hope they wouldn’t do that. But I also don’t want to think that Ubaldo’s struggling that much with his command.

you dont have to individually press z
you can hold z down and it flies through the thread. you can easily tell where the topic ends and a new one begins
Yes, but there may be stuff you don't want to miss in between.
It’s really not as easy as that. At least not for me. Plus, topics often shift halfway through a thread.
And they did get quite a lot of complaints. I think they had no choice.
i know they got complaints and i understand people not wanting to read about the OT things
i just think that is the point that things around here started to change
Oh, I agree that was the point.
But it was also pretty sudden that the Rockpiles got that out of control.
i think its like what you said below
lack of baseball during the break + people having more free time over the summer
Would it work rejoining them now?
I mean, I think the explosion of the Rockpile had more to do with no baseball happening during the All Star Break than it did with any inherent site/community problem.
This is exactly right.

Brad Hawpe: Fix that swing!
Todd and Tulo: Ready to Rox and roll

I would agree with that
Although it sounded like they’d been gettting complaints before things really exploded.
I’ve seen this before on other sites. I’ve been in the mods position. It’s tough. There’s not any real good answers. You get a community of people that enjoy each other and they start to chat about other things. It’s a good part of the experience for them. And other people find it annoying and don’t want to read it. You can try to separate it, but then some people feel excluded and that they’re missing out on something, others feel stifled and picked on. You’ll lose some of both groups. And the OT stuff still pops up everywhere. You can leave it the way it was and tell people who don’t want to read it to just ignore it. You’ll lose a lot of them. Or you can try to just stop the OT discussions. That will fail. Guaranteed. And you’ll probably lose a lot of people in the process.
My guess is that their current solution is probably the best one. It’s going to take a while to get used to. Maybe they have the option of locking comments on other threads during games or something, but I’d hate to see them do it. More options is generally going to mean more users having good experiences, and it very, very rarely has anything to do with any kind of personal slight to anybody else.
Bazinga!
by Junction Rox on Jul 24, 2010 3:49 PM MDT up reply actions

People are free to do what they want when they want.

by Andrew Martin on Jul 24, 2010 6:08 PM MDT up reply actions
I wouldn't favor it

I've only done it once or twice
because I realized the next day that there were still discussions carrying in the non-current threads.
by Andrew Martin on Jul 24, 2010 6:18 PM MDT up reply actions
It would only work if the threads didn't go back to how they were.
Also, I think maybe some people suddenly had more free time, too. Don’t know.
See I think the root of the problem is that people started using the Rockpile as a place to screw off during work even when there was no baseball news
This just got bigger and bigger until we were finally forced to create overflow rockpiles and now an off topic rockpile.
Unfortunately this off topic rockpile stuff coincided with this terrible Rockies roadtrip which caused the game threads to become unbearable for some of the regulars. It’s the combination of these two things that I think is sending Purple Row down a dangerous road and possibly to a place where we can never get back what we had

by Andrew Martin on Jul 24, 2010 6:05 PM MDT up reply actions
It's not that people shouldn't be allowed to chat.
I chatted too, before it became too much for me. I just feel like it’s sort of changed the community and has overflowed into the problems in the game threads.
I freely admit that part of this is that I just don’t have the time or patience for the OT threads myself (I probably spend too much of my work time in the Rockpiles as it is), so it sort of makes me feel less a part of the community than I did before, especially if the game threads keep being this horrible. So maybe it’s just my problem, but I still don’t like the feeling.
by holly96 on Jul 24, 2010 6:12 PM MDT up reply actions 1 recs
not everyone sees Purple Row as the big community as some do
some people find it to be a place to talk baseball and then leave. Some people find it a place to make new IRL friends.
Not everyone gets the same thing from this website as everyone else (and I’m not singling you out here, holly), so it’s unfair to conform the website to be what people think it should be.
The fact is that this is Purple Row – For Colorado Rockies Fans. That said, we are going to adhere to keeping FP stuff baseball-related (with a few random exceptions, obv), but try to cater to the userbase as well.
We have several people who think the OT is great – myself included – but the majority of the website would rather just talk baseball and not have to Z through OT comments. So we made an OT thread to contain that. It might just be a passing thing, but we have it for now. Other sites have it too, this isn’t a rare occurrence.
by Andrew Martin on Jul 24, 2010 6:17 PM MDT up reply actions
Like I said, I totally understand the reason for the OT threads.
And I probably wouldn’t be bothered at all if I didn’t feel like the game threads have been disintegrating (I totally just had to look up the spelling for that, what the heck) and many of the people that made them enjoyable for me aren’t around as much. I’m probably unfairly conflating the two issues.
Also, I get that everyone wants different things. Me, I kind of want a middle ground. And now it feels like to some degree I only have the extremes to choose from. But again, I’m not sure what other options there were.
I think you are linking them a bit too much
people have been trying to find other ways to discuss the game for over a year now.
What would you have it be? Seriously, I’m asking.
by Andrew Martin on Jul 24, 2010 6:25 PM MDT up reply actions
Like I said, I honestly don't know.
And I was perfectly content (with the exception of the game thread problem on occasion) until recently. Like Wolf talked about above, every community goes through changes, and everyone has to find their own way to fit into the new status quo (or not, I guess). I’m sure there are people who weren’t content before and now are.
The biggest problem for me
Is that over the offseason I didn’t have a job, so I could hang out and talk most of the day. Now I can’t participate, except in Gamethreads, so it feels exacerbated for me. Maybe it hasn’t gotten worse, maybe it’s only my perception, but I almost want to leave Purple Row a lot of the time. But that’s only me. I don’t know what, if anything, has changed for others.
by controlled_slide on Jul 24, 2010 6:32 PM MDT up reply actions
See, I approach internet commentary much differently than most of PR does
I’m VERY sarcastic (if we haven’t noticed yet – I know, everyone has) but I have to tone down what I say so it doesn’t get taken literally.
There’s parts in the game where I WANT to say “Dammit Barmes, you suck so hard” but I know that the people reading and responding won’t take that as I intend it to read: “Dammit Barmes, you make good plays and have solid power in your bat but that play disappointed me”
The underlying understanding of players and their capabilities and skill levels aren’t uniformly agreed upon on the website, so if I said something like that, it wouldn’t be understood that I do appreciate what Barmes brings and typically have a levelheaded approach to things.
It’s really a frame of reference thing that comes from having people at all sorts of different levels of fandom. Sarcasm is read properly because people don’t realize where everyone else is coming from.
All this is pertaining to gamethreads by the way.
by Andrew Martin on Jul 24, 2010 6:34 PM MDT up reply actions
and as a followup thought
this isn’t a PR-specific problem. I don’t think I’ve been to any sports website ever where their gamethreads are levelheaded and well-discussed. Every website is swarming with gamethread chicken littles. Everywhere. So Honestly, I avoid pretty much everyone’s gamethreads.
by Andrew Martin on Jul 24, 2010 6:36 PM MDT up reply actions
Oh, that's certainly true, too.
And we’re probably still not as bad as most. I just hope for the impossible, I guess.
So what do you do when you want to discuss your favorite team while they're playing
And you don’t live near them? This is why I (and perhaps also Holly) have a hard time leaving the Gamethreads. And thus is why I (and perhaps Holly) am sad.

Except for BYU sports. There are enough fans here I could watch games with them if I want (though one of my friends is entirely too intense for me, heh).
And I feel guilty taking up a seat

Yep.
I watch games alone. I attend games alone when I go here. PR is my only means of interaction with other fans during a game.
Good point, there.
This is a good point.
There are definitely some commenters where past history gives a comment a different tone (e.g., I think I would probably understand you in your example). But there are definitely some posters who don’t mean things in the way you would, and those are the ones that bring down the thread. There seem to be more of those lately. I these are the same ones that would probably take your comment and respond in total agreement in the “DFA him” sense.

I don’t want to have to launch into an explanation or debate on any particular topic based on one out-of-context comment.

Here's the problem
What do you do with the people who make it unenjoyable for you and the people you like? If you go off with them and have the kind of discussion that you want from a Rockies forum, then it’ll look bad from the outside. It’s not an easy situation, and it’s really too bad.

The team must have their roster finalized before the game.
If Buchholz couldn’t be here by game time, they could have kept Chacin active, and made the move before tomorrow’s game instead.

I really don't see how we were that lucky
When the injuty first happened it was thought that it was going to take six weeks. Well the injury happened on June 17th so six weeks is July 29th. I wouldn’t call him coming back one day early that lucky.
Get well soon Tulo. The Rockies need you.

it was 6-8 weeks
so we are lucky that its on the short end of the timeline
No, it was 6-8 weeks.
We hit the bottom half of the spread. That’s still early. It takes players much longer to heal from this injury sometimes. You can’t consider early parts of a projection not to be early. Otherwise, only a truly remarkable event would be considered early. if you’re really THAT picky about the use of the word early, I will say “earlier than it could have been”. Better?

If they continue to wilt away on Sunday and Monday morning, we might need that many wins to stay in the race.
Hopefully the Rockies will get some extra rest and some extra fluids to get ready for these last two matinees.

Hopefully Tulo gets through this weekend in Tulsa without incident.
Looks like he’s batting third for the Drillers tonight against the Arkansas Travelers, with catcher Wilin Rosario batting clean-up.

Wow, Renck's article is up in the Post....pretty harsh on Ubaldo
Technically, that’s not true. He can pitch — just not like an ace. In a nationally-televised game with his team desperate for a lift, Jimenez shrunk in the moment. He was gone before the first cheesesteak was devoured, rocked in the Rockies’ 10-2 loss to the Phillies.

If he's not hurt or burnt out, he did shrink,
unless the theory is that he has a mental issue, in which case, it’s been an extended shrink.
I can't believe what I just saw
Doggers get runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out in the bottom of the 12th. Mets bring on Oliver Perez, of all people. Perez works out of it without letting the game get away. On to the 13th.
May need to stop by a church and light a candle now. (Although, being Baptist, I might get a few odd looks…)
Doggers now have nobody left on the bench or in the pen. Sherrill on the hill….

If he plays Player X over Player Y, we maybe score 2 more runs, stop 1 more run, and lose 9-4.

kind of not….Tracy is the manager. The wheels seem to be coming off or at least we have a flat tire dangling from a rim,

But it's not his first time up
I’m not even sure it’s his first time against the Rockies.
I honestly think there is some exhaustion setting in at this point. 9 games, 3 cities, brutal heat and humidity pretty much every day.
But that doesn’t explain the start of the trip…

From Renck on Ubaldo:
Ubaldo’s poor location blamed on delivery. He was bending back leg too much, too soon. Getting small led him to throw uphill and wild
Jimenez said he could feel it happening, but struggled to fix it. It was his worst command since april of last season
Hopefully they actually have pinpointed the problem and he and Dac can work on it.
Also, this just makes me think how amazing pitching deliveries are.
So many moving parts. One small change and the whole thing gets out of whack.
I've become somewhat of an amateur pitcher lately
I throw 50-100 pitches a day as part of my exercise routine, the the delivery consistency is the part I struggle with most.

That's really interesting.
What are you trying to get out of it? Because it seems as though the motion is just so weird that it would be more useful for hurting a shoulder than for strength or other kind of fitness. (I’ve got no clue – I’ve never played baseball – girl who went through grade school before Little League was opened to girls, and not a physical therapist/athletic trainer, either. Though I’ve got physical therapists in the family and ask them questions like this when I’ve got a chance…)
"Are they called the Rockies because they rock?" - 7 y.o.
I throw them against a brick wall.
The fitness part of it comes from chasing after the ball.
So far, my shoulder seems fine.

None of them are in Colorado... California & Connecticut.
I don’t hear from them enough to know if their companies are hiring or not. (Your family is in Colorado, right? The California connection is in Santa Barbara.)
"Are they called the Rockies because they rock?" - 7 y.o.
Yeah, he's in Colorado. Just graduated from CU Health Sciences.
Willing to go elsewhere for a job, but probably not Connecticut. Or Santa Barbara (I’m in CA, so if he were going to come here, it’d be more fun if he came to my area). It was worthy a try!
Do you recall
all of the talk in the fall of ‘07 and spring of ’08 about Morales, and the pitching coaches working on his ability to “repeat the delivery”? Uball’s situation today is exactly what they were talking about. He couldn’t repeat his normal (and best) delivery successfully. We’re seeing most our pitching staff have that problem this year. We’ll have to hope to Dac and crew can come up with some answers.

With some pitchers
A good deal of it is mental. (See: Morales, Frankin). For others, it’s all about muscle memory. Like memorizing a piece of music on the piano. If you play it enough, your muscles will just remember the sequence, thereby eliminating the need for sheet music.
Get your purple on.
