Todd Helton Placed on Disabled List, Brad Eldred Purchased and Recalled

According to Denver Post author Troy Renck, the Rockies have placed Todd Helton on the 15 Day Disabled list, presumably retroactive to three days ago when he last played. AAA Colorado Springs first baseman Brad Eldred has been recalled, and will start tonight. Eldred was not on the roster, meaning his contract was purchased. This move fills the 40 Man Roster, therefore a corresponding move will need to be made when Taylor Buchholz is activated from the 60 Day DL.

Eldred has hit more home runs than anyone else in the entire Rockies organization this year, with 22. In 74 games at the major league level with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Eldred has hit .199 with 14 home runs and 93 strikeouts.

wonder if he'll start tonight

I will say this. Since it’s pretty much a certainty that Tracy won’t play Hawpe or Iannetta at first, I would much rather see Eldred there than Mora. Can I get an amen?

by BringItHome on Jul 7, 2010 4:07 PM MDT reply actions

Had to see this coming. He hadn't started in about a week.

His back must really be bad to go on the DL. I just wonder if this is a season ending injury.

Is Eldred the answer or does this put us in the market for a first base solution at the trading deadline?

However, I’d really like to see us follow that path of Hawpe and CDI taking groundballs at 1B.

Don't really need another 1B-type on the roster

If they trade for Wigginton, they should just go all out and trade for Uggla. It’d actually fill a position of need.

not really sure I like this move

but I guess we don’t have too many other great options.

I’d like to see Hawpe at first, but he would have had to have been taking groundballs and working at 1b for at least a month by now.

I don’t really think Eldred will do anything that Giambi couldn’t, but maybe Giambi isn’t fit for everyday playing.

I'm expecting this:

When Bucky comes back, Eldred goes back down. By that time, CDI and/or Hawpe will be ready to take half the time with Giambi. My guess is that CDI and Hawpe will be kicking it into high gear to be ready to play 1B soon after the ASB.

by roxintober on Jul 7, 2010 4:22 PM MDT up reply actions

To add...

I think Bucky getting activated will be based on the ready-ness of CDI or Hawpe to help out at 1B, rather than being dependent on the needs of the bullpen.

I hope you're right about CDI & Hawpe

I suppose we could

but if they both got injured in the same game (which would technically be more likely to happen since both would be getting more innings) we’d be screwed.

Also, this is something I think I would do if I were Giants and had Posey and Sandoval. But I could be missing something here.

Also, do we have an emergency catcher on the team?

I've always been of the opinion

That if both catchers get hurt in one game (or if one get subbed in late and gets hurt), you’re pretty much screwed for that game. However, the chances of it happening are so slim you’re better off using your backup catcher like a normal bench player every day with the understanding that there may be one day you have to pay for it.

by Jeff Francis Day on Jul 7, 2010 4:52 PM MDT up reply actions

In a way I agree

but no manager could risk doing that because in the off chance it did happen he would get lit up by the media

by BringItHome on Jul 7, 2010 4:54 PM MDT up reply actions

So true

Difficult to show that the every day utilization of a catcher as a bench player (when it’s a productive bat like Olivo or CDI) will bring you at least one win to offset the automatic loss you’d be getting on a day they both got hurt or subbed in for.

But I’m sure it can be done.

by Jeff Francis Day on Jul 7, 2010 4:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Funny because you always hear stuff like

do what you need to do to win today’s game but that’s rarely carried out, understandably so as the baseball season is massive. On stuff like that though, I say put the best batter in for the situation and give him the chance to win the game. Who cares if you have a healthy catcher left on the bench after a loss.

We were signing them at the time

both for leaving Ianetta in the game so he’d be available to catch with Mora still on the bench if the need arose, and for bringing in Corpas in a “no pressure” situation. Last night at the game I specifically called the Ianetta move “brilliant”.

Lots of praise was sung on PR last October and November too. That said, it’s part of being a fan to constantly second-guess your manager during the season :-)

by RoarFrom112 on Jul 7, 2010 5:46 PM MDT up reply actions

In fact

It’d be interesting to look at the percentage of games where a catcher gets hurt and has to get subbed out for. I’m saying it’s close to 1 in 1,000

by Jeff Francis Day on Jul 7, 2010 5:02 PM MDT up reply actions

Where's the evidence that the game is lost if both catchers get hurt?

Maybe in an extraordinary circumstance like two catchers going down and a rookie pitcher starting. But, I’m pretty sure that either pitchers can basically call their own pitch or a third player is capable of a) receiving the pitch, b) memorizing a few signals which they probably already know, and c) throw the ball back to the pitcher.

The other team might be able to run on him, but if the pitcher is pitching well then it shouldn’t be a big deal. If he’s not pitching well, then the team is probably screwed any way.

All of that aside, who is the Rockies’ emergency catcher?

by deacs on Jul 7, 2010 6:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, most likely Mora

But, I don’t trust the FO to make these moves. They have a huge problem getting rid of these players. They just fall in love with… Whatever it is they see in them.

Well that's assuming

that Helton’s stay on the DL is more than the minimum. Honestly, Helton won’t miss too many more games – he’s already missed 3, and with the all-star break coming up – those are 3 DL days that don’t actually count against games.

So the Rockies may just bring Eldred up just to have around – I think Helton is only going to miss another 8 games…

I’m a CF, came in at number 8 and noticed last night that after 45 games of the season I’m batting cleanup despite being a slower Dex who can’t take walks (.270/.310/.430). I reckon it’s because I have something like 41 RBIs (thus proving their uselessness in judging strong play).

Todd should get his LASIK done now.

Just sayin’. It’s clear that the contacts didn’t help him and now he has time to recover from the surgery and get used to his new eyes before he’s re-activated… and he can get some good swings in at the Springs.

With his back and legs acting up, I wouldn't be surprised if that were the primary problem at the moment.

Eyesight vs. bat speed

I’m not going to disagree with the “at the moment” statement… but he has been staring at third strikes right down the gullet, too. Sometimes, he just looks astonished, like he had no idea the pitch was a strike.

im convinced that is because

He is hurt and is in a really bad place with the bat and has no confidence in getting a hit, thus hoping for more walks. Just Sunday, he had a strike called in him and he immediately told the ump “that was outside”

I highly doubt that his vision would go so poorly in one year such that his depth perception is off six inches

Not disagreeing that they helped

… but getting his eyes fixed would be infinitely better. I’m sure you heard the stories about how long it was taking him to get his contacts in. I pictured in my mind half the team holding him down while he was kicking and screaming while somebody tried to get one in.

Anyway, all kidding aside, the surgery is such a no-brainer now, and would be better for him and the team in the long run. This is just a perfect opportunity to do it.

He stared at that third strike in his last game and I became convinced that he’s still not seeing the ball well.

by trekinaz on Jul 7, 2010 5:25 PM MDT up reply actions

I hadn't heard those stories....

I don’t disagree that Lasik would help as a permanent fix….I guess the point I was trying to make is that the contacts did fix his vision problem at the plate, but he didn’t stay healthy long enough afterwards to reap much of the benefit of that. But yeah, it would be the perfect opportunity to do so now.

But not everyone who benefits from contacts is actually even a good Lasik candidate, it depends on the specific nature of the eye problem (not so much the severity, really). I haven’t seen where it’s indicated that Helton checked into Lasik and decided against it, even though it was diagnosed as a good treatment for him specifically.

Staring at that third strike…yeah, it sucked, but even Pujols just flat out gets fooled once in a while. That AB against the Gints isn’t by itself an argument that his vision correction needs…further correction.

As a lifetime contact wearer...

I’ve got to say they were never easy to play baseball in, or any other activity where you need to keep your eyes open to concentrate. The dry climate here just forces you to blink at inopportune times, like as the ball is being released from a pitcher’s hand.

I grew up playing competitive golf, and I’d almost always lose the ball in the air after blinking on tee shots just trying to follow it to the ground. It got kind of embarrassing to have to ask where it landed almost every time. And forget about it if it were even a little bit windy.

I was lucky to have discovered sun glasses later in life. They’ve literally changed my ability to play outdoor sports. Wear ‘em all the time. And I’m not a LASIK candidate — too blind.

When I played football growing up, I never could wear contacts.

I did have the Chris Sabo style plastic sports goggles though.

This game could indeed be some trouble.

We’re looking at significant precipitation not leaving the area until 11:00 tonight.

Oh crap, this bugs me for one big reason

Going to tomorrow’s day game, and if they push U-Ball and Chris Carpenter back to an evening makeup game, I’mma gonna be pissed.

I like the idea of Eldred comming up....

he’s be raking in AAA all season long, and given how poorly the 1st base position had produced, it doesn’t hurt to give the guy a chance.

Considering the pleasant returns from the Springs of late

in terms of Dex, CDI, Herrera, and Nelson, might as well give it a shot. But I really think Bradley is a better fit there going forward.

raking

means hitting for average AND power. He has a low BA and a lot of home runs which generally doesn’t translate well to ML level. Tonight we shall see though.
