Game #117: Manny Parra vs. Ubaldo Jimenez
The last time Manny Parra took the mound at Coors Field after the All-Star Break, the Rockies abused him on their way to clinching the National League Wild Card. Yeah....I went there.
Now, the Rockies will be aiming to avoid a home series loss for just the second time in the last two months. If that happens, it is a good chance we could be witnessing history, as Ubaldo Jimenez guns for a franchise record 18th win. It probably doesn't get any easier than facing Manny Parra at home. But we know what happened the last time Ubaldo faced a pitcher who was winless in his last six starts...

Figured after being 13-1
thru May, he would be at 20 by now. However, his consistency has been all over the place since then. He waivers on command and stuff trust from time to time. Hopefully today he’ll be on par. The dude has amazing stuff and needs to throw his fastball more.

Tracy doesn't make it easyfor Uball with Ey in the outfiled and Mora at first
He will have to earn every out and then some
Lineup
I have no idea how this team can get any consistency when the lineup fluctuates so much everyday. Barmes is a great guy to have on the team – as a utility player who can play virtually any position. The problem is that Tracy seems to still think he is an everyday player. With the playoff hopes looking slimmer with each series split, it is time to see if EY2 or Nelson can be the answer (OBP as in Rox Girls post this morning) for next season, without having to pay free agent dollars.
Tracy has no alternatives at 2B
Both he and O’Dowd have acknowledged this. He has played Herrera and EY2 most games they have been on the roster, but there’s just no alternative for him there. Inconsistencies and injuries have really forced Tracy’s hand with lineup construction

I think not giving themselves alternatives
Is my biggest gripe. After Barmes performance last year and his career there should have been a plan B for second base.
MY FACEBOOK STATUS:WAITING AROUND THE CORNER FOR FRANKLIN MORALES
Absolutely, but that wasn't Tracy's move
That was O’Dowd signing Giambi and the scouts overrating Mora’s defense at 2B

Injuries
I agree that injuries have forced Tracy’s hand for much of the season, but I do not agree with there being no alternative for the remainder of the season. Time to see what EY2 or Nelson could do with extended, consistent playing time at 2b.
We may get plenty of chances in September.

If you take a look at the number of lineups a team uses each year, there isn't much of a correlation between success and failure.

correlation
I would like to take a closer look at that data. A lineup can be a “different” lineup for purposes of creating a correlation like what you are mentioning, simply by sitting one regular player at a time, one or two days per week. That is entirely different than approaching the lineup card like a hockey line change where all but 2-3 players have to check EVERYDAY if they are in the lineup and in what batting order. That would require a different approach to preparation, I would think. I would like PHLP perspective on this subject.
Many things go into it
1. Matchups are huge. Perhaps EY2 has killed Parra.
2. The obvious L/R things.
3. Type of pitcher GB vs FB, K vs Contact
4. Injuries
5. Need for rest
6. Platoon scenarios
7. The simple fact that some infusion needs to occur. This team has hit so poorly over the last month. I think EY2 is highly valued by Tracy. He comes from DNA, has a professional approach, and make things happen.

Defense is an overrated commodity
for the most part 95% of all MLB players are average defensively. Over the course of the game you may have 1 or 2 difficult plays to make at each position. That is much less occurrence than what you can do at the plate. My manager used to tell me I would have 1-2 plays a game that I had to read and make plays on. Depending upon the situation you lay back or go all out. If we’re up by 4 runs then you make the sure play, it is tied or your up/down by a run, you create the play.

“A lineup can be a "different" lineup for purposes of creating a correlation like what you are mentioning, simply by sitting one regular player at a time, one or two days per week”
Not in this case. The measurement I used did not indicate every time the lineup changed, but rather every different lineup that was used in a season. In other words, if the lineup is the same except for one player being benched twice a week, it doesn’t count three times, only two.
Different managers have different approaches. Charlie Manuel loves lineup consistency. Mike Scioscia doesn’t factor it in at all. The NL has a slightly smaller average lineup differential than the American league. Injuries and trades are also a factor. The conclusion remains that every year, teams with a wide variety of lineups and teams without a wide variety of lineups both achieve success and failure.
Far more important than lineup consistency are the players themselves. Playing the best lineup is more important than playing the same lineup; they’re not always congruent.

This.
Playing the best lineup is more important than playing the same lineup; they’re not always congruent.
Totally agree with that statement. Other than giving regulars a breather, or playing a hot hand/matchup, as PHLP suggests, putting the best available players in the lineup everyday would seem to give a team the best chance to win. That suggests to me that the same players should be on the field, at their best position and in the same spot on the batting order most days. Unless the team is created with totally interchangeable players, there is typically a hierarchy of talent, even at this, the top level.
One of the more recent factors as well
is potential bullpen matchups. Ex. Parra starts today and Smith is atrocious against him, however since that McCleland kid pitched 3 innings last night you know he is not available and pitcher x is. Perhaps you know he will be in the game at some point and Smith is 6-9 against him pitcher x. This all goes into the equation.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Aug 15, 2010 1:17 PM MDT up reply actions
I'm certainly not arguing that Tracy always plays the best lineup.
I just think that the idea of “lineup consistency” as being the most important factor in lineup construction is a falsity.

how about
consistently playing the best lineup/players…?
What if that means starting Mora at 1B because he kills Nate Robertson?
Or benching Hawpe and Smith against LHP because Spilborghs and Fowler hit lefties much better?

platoon
I have no issue with those types of match up plays. In fact, that would define the best lineup/players given those matchup distinctions. The type of lineup consistency I am referring to is starting EY2 at 2b one night, presumably because Barmes is not getting it done and EY2 may be given a chance to prove he can stick at 2b if he provides offensive spark while playing adequate defense. Then the next day, after providing said spark, EY2 is replaced at 2b by Barmes, but is then thrown into left field where we already have an superior platoon option. In that situation, it would seem that the neither Barmes, EY2 or the outfielders who earned their spots in spring training have received any kind of consistent message.
win
that is all
time to make another run to the postseason....get it going guys!!
Troy Tulowitzki: "When people think of the Rockies, I want them to think of a winning organization."
EY2
is rapidly becoming a clone to EY1. You may remember they put him in the OF around 1997 due to defense. He is one of those speed guys who creates but you struggle to find a slot for. I am one of those guys who relish versatility. However they need to find 2 slots he can play and get him ABs. He should play winter ball this year and work on that.

Sac fly opportunity here. But we're not due for one for another 3 games
Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything. ~Toby Harrah, 1983
the league average for converting a sacrifice fly in such a situation (less than two outs, runner on third) is just 18.3%, while the Rockies convert 23.4% of the time.

so since we a bit above average this is good?

It means we score by fly balls and not as often ground balls

"When I was pitching 90's in the seventies; I never thought I'd be pitching 70's in the nineties!" Frank Tanana
It actually said "sacrifice hits"
so I think sac flies and sac grounders are included

Sac hits average is 18%; my bad

For a team that's 4 games above .500, I'd suggest something we are above average at is not something worth worrying about
Especially since we are a good 30% above average.
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Aug 15, 2010 2:15 PM MDT up reply actions
and why is it that we're 4 games above .500? Could it be that we perform around the average level?
Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything. ~Toby Harrah, 1983
I think it's the overall holes in our line up...
Or really our real plate coverage
"Why are they outlawin' the spit pitch? The curveball is a cheap 'n easy pitch; the spitter aint" Ty Cobb
"When I was pitching 90's in the seventies; I never thought I'd be pitching 70's in the nineties!" Frank Tanana
Implying that we should value the facets of the game at which we are better than average.
Foxes are naughties
And work to improve where we aren't

"When I was pitching 90's in the seventies; I never thought I'd be pitching 70's in the nineties!" Frank Tanana
Being at 23.4% when the league average is 18% is not "average level"
I haven’t looked too deeply, but I can guarantee the MLB leader isn’t 50% or anything. We’re at .500 because we’re average and below average at other skills.

Braun should’ve been called out on batter’s interference
The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.
Fielder interfered but he also struck out. Could you have called Braun out for Fielder's interference?
Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything. ~Toby Harrah, 1983
I would hope so...
…otherwise there’s no reason for anybody to NOT interfere if they’ve just K’d for the second out…
what about declaring a dead ball at the time of interference and return Braun to first?
Not sure if that’s applicable here but there are some rules that return the runner to the last base legally occupied IIRC.

Barmes misplayed a pop-up

If the 2007 Rockies can win 21 out of 22 to reach the World Series and the 2009 Rockies can come from 12 games under .500 in June to make the playoffs, why can't the 2010 Rockies make the postseason after being 51-50?

Really? Because who else on this roster should be playing 2B?
Mora? He was ATROCIOUS on defense. EY? He JUST got called up and has started 50% of the games. Herrera? He isn’t here, but Tracy played him a lot when he was. Stewart? Yeah right.
There is no options. I love O’Dowd, but he really put Tracy in a difficult position by bringing in Mora and Giambi as our only bench infielders
