Rockies sign Kyle Parker for $1.4 million
As originally reported by Jim Callis of Baseball America, the Rockies have come to terms with their first overall selection of the MLB draft, signing Kyle Parker to a $1.4 million dollar contract near Monday night's deadline. Troy Renck tweets that the deal does allow Parker to continue to play football and the Rockies may have to let him try to juggle both sports for a season or two.
Earlier in the afternoon, it was also announced that the Rockies signed supplemental first round pick Peter Tago for $985,000.

With those who don't give a damn about baseball, I can only sympathize. I do not resent them. I am even willing to concede that many of them are physically clean, good to their mothers and in favor of world peace. But while the game is on, I can't think of anything to say to them. ~Art Hill

23 innings here we come
If the 2007 Rockies can win 21 out of 22 to reach the World Series and the 2009 Rockies can come from 12 games under .500 in June to make the playoffs, why can't the 2010 Rockies make the postseason after being 51-50?

In that game four years ago, Jeff Salazar homered for the Sky Sox to give them the lead 8-7, but Memphis hit back-to-back homers (with two strikes and two outs) for the 9-8 win.
The Sky Sox actually had a 17-inning game back in 1988 against Edmonton. And they actually kept it under 5 hours.
I remember Jeff Salazar.
Worked in a couple utility OF positions the past couple years. Looks like he’s in the Orioles minor league system right now.

I'm confused
On how it’s possible for a kid to be a student athlete, and also be paid to be a professional athlete. You’d think with all these stories about guys like Reggie Bush taking money from agents and stuff while still in school, that a kid having an agent and signing a million plus dollar contract violates some type of NCAA regulations….but apparently not(I know for college basketball players, the moment they sign an agent, they lose all eligibility to return and play college basketball). Just seems hypocritical to me.
I also have a cousin who is on a golf scholarship, and he was telling me how the school prevents him from even having a job….because in a sense, the school is paying for his education, so they demand that all his time be spent either on school, or on the sport which he is on scholarship for.
Alanna Rizzo is my dream girl.

From what I know
The basic concept is that you don’t have an agent, so it’s like having a job while you’re in school. He’ll still have to attend class and meet all of the other guidelines set by the NCAA to be eligible to play football. I do know that he’ll forfeit his college baseball eligibility by earning money while play that specific sport.

Which is weird because
we all know what happened to Jeremy Bloom when he accepted money for skiing. He had to forfeit his football eligibility as well. NCAA has got some weird rules.
Weird rules, sure.
The difference with Bloom was that he excepted endorsements, not a salary, in essence, for skiing.
If he excepted endorsements, it would be quite different ;-p
Accepting them was his undoing.

Another strong draft
With Parker, Tago and Will Swanner all signing the Rockies were able to solidify a pretty strong draft.
Parker, Tago, Bettis and Swanner makes for 4 1st or 2nd round talents.
I hope that the Rockies are able to afford to both offer arbitration to Type A free agents in reasonable cases and also afford to continue to spend money to acquire impact talent in the draft because drafts like these last two really add a TON of talent to a farm system.
That's not outrageous money over 5 years
Particularly if it gets reduced due to him sticking with football.
I was hoping the Rox would not overpay Parker. I watched him during
the NCAA’s & wasn’t particularly impressed. Big players should step
up during big games, and he didn’t do much.
I’ll give the Rockies scouts, who have a good track record in recent years,
the benefit of the doubt on this one, but I do have some doubts about
Parker’s skills.
Mediocrity sucks
Logan White on the "unsignable" Zach Lee
As a pitcher, White said Lee is a better all-around athlete than either Kershaw or Chad Billingsley, two recent first-round picks (2006 and 2004, respectively) who are now mainstays in the Dodgers’ starting rotation.
“He has an absolutely picture-perfect delivery and excellent arm action,’’ White said.”He is as pure as any pitcher I have ever seen. He has power stuff like Kershaw and Billingsley, but when those guys were younger, they would almost fight through a wall sometimes and try to overpower somebody, but they have grown and learned how to pitch more than just throw and be more effective with their pitch counts.
“I think Lee at the same age has a better feel for how to pitch than Chad or Clayton, and I don’t mean that to disparage them at all.’’
White said Lee’s fastball touches 95 mph, but that he normally pitches in the 89-90 range, has a good breaking ball and a great changeup.
LOVE IT!!

Dodgers definitely turned out to be one of the division's draft winners
although at a hefty sum of money. The Padres turned into a pumpkin after looking really good initially once they failed to sign Whitson. I’m going to have to go evaluate now who added the most talent, but your team should definitely figure prominently with the Lee signing.
Agreed
The Dodgers surprised by adding an impact power arm at the deadline and the Padres surprised by punting on acquiring a similar arm at the deadline.
Both were big enough prizes to significantly shift the overall results of their respective drafts.
