Thanks for the Memories Brad

Well, Brad Hawpe's days as a Rockie are over.  (Man it feels weird to type that)  Even though I knew this day was coming for a while it still hurts to see him go and I think I speak for all of us when I say I'm really gonna miss him.

In this fanpost I want everyone to post their favorite Brad Hawpe memory/story.  I think we all owe it to him after all the great seasons he's provided us.

Take it away folks.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

It's hard for me to not pick the home run Hawpe hit in the 14th inning in San Diego

that gave the Rockies a 2-1 win in the middle of that late season miracle run in 2007.

When we think about that magical Rocktober run, we always think about game 163, the play at the plate, Helton’s walk off home run against Saito, and that wild final weekend of the season against Arizona, but Hawpe’s heroics in San Diego remain the forgotten gem in that run.

Bottom line; game 163 against San Diego never happens if it wasn’t for Hawpe’s performance in this game against San Diego.

Thanks Brad, we couldn’t have done it without you.

I'm going to miss Brad terribly--he was a fixture in the Rockies lineup for many years.

I remember that Homer off of Thatcher, I remember that go-ahead double in game 162, I remember him making the all star team and almost giving the NL the go-ahead homer, I remember some amazing throws from the outfield, I remember a classy guy and a darn good baseball player.

You’ll be missed Brad—here’s to success wherever you go next!

I also remember being angry that Dustan Mohr started opening day in 2005 over him, haha

I guess another memory now is being at the game in which he hit his final homer as a Rockie—I remember snarkily cheering ‘trade valueeeee’, but that was only in jest. I really will miss him.

Im just gonna repost the comment I put in the Rockpile.

One of my favorite Brad Hawpe memories…
I know there are a lot of different moments I could put here, from the magic of 07 and all the playoff games, but here’s mine:

It was June 7, 2008. I really don’t know how or why I remember the exact date, but anyways….I remeber I wanted to go to the game because it was Tulo bobblehead day, but ended up not. I stayed home and listened to the game on the radio.

So the bases were loaded. Brad Hawpe hit a high fly to left. I held my breath. I can still remember the call: "going, going, GRAND SLAM!". I was a young Rockies fan, both in experience, and in age. I had never heard a grand slam called before, I had only read and heard of them. It was the first grand slam I heard on the radio, and I was so excited. Wow! A grand slam! That’s pretty special, I thought. I guess it was the last grand slam he’d ever hit in a Rockies uniform, and that’s sad.

I still believe...
This is R year!

The 14th inning home run in Sept. 2007 at Petco was my favorite too

But here are some others:

Nearly helping the NL end its All Star Game losing streak in 2009 with a ball that was a foot away from being a key home run (screw you, Carl Crawford)
-8th inning game winning HR off Broxton at Coors sometime in September 2007 (I think it was the night after the Todd/Saito walkoff)
-Getting the Rox on the board in game 4 of the 2007 WS with a 2nd deck shot to right
-Watching him gun down numerous baserunners at 3rd and home in 2005 and 2006, before the scouting report on his arm was really complete
-Hitting a 450+ foot blast off Greg Maddux at Coors in June of 2008 (seriously, who knew you could hit an 83 mph pitch off the back of the batters eye?)
-Being Brandon Webb’s kryptonite: 1.213 OPS in 59 PA
-Being, as far as I can tell, the last non-pitcher member of the “GenR” movement to leave the Rockies (and probably the second to last player
only Francis remains because I don’t think Cook counts)

Thanks buddy!

Wait, what's his real name? We should make a joke out of that.

MAN we got the Dodgers so good those two weeks. Spilly hittin’ the bomb the previous day off of Brox, Todd off of Saito, Holliday hit like 3 homers in two days, Atkins got em good the next week…..ah man.

Taking Joe Thatcher deep.

Or how’s about this: the fact that he DIDN’T bat after Holliday in game 163? He was Mr. 2-out RBI in 2007, so even if Holliday was called out, Hawper would have driven in Helton from 2B.

Happy trails, friend.

Jamie Carroll had a grand slam during a game in '07

Hawpe and Josh Fogg were together in the dugout. I remember the image of the two of them standing next to one another with just expressions of disbelief on their faces. Hawpe broke into a grin and smacked Fogg as the ball went over the fence. Fogg goes “it went out?” and Hawpe is giving him a hard time. Great moment of enthusiasm from #11.

I was at this game:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/COL/COL200707060.shtml

The Rockies were down five runs early, but scored two in the sixth and then started chipping away at the Phillies bullpen.

Anyway, Charlie Manuel brings in Antonio Alfonseca to protect a one-run lead in the ninth, and the Rox have Helton, Atkins, and Hawpe coming up, so I’m feeling pretty good. But Helton grounds out and Atkins flies out, and Hawpe gets down 1-2, and suddenly the Rockies are down to their last strike and I’m getting ready to go home disappointed…

And Hawpe absolutely MURDERIZES a ball to the fountains in straightaway center field. I’m screaming my head off, along with most of the (disappointingly sparse) crowd—although the Phillies fans sitting two rows in front of me had some choice words for Alfonseca. But the thing about it was that you could tell how pumped Hawpe was as he went around the bases. I’d never seen him show that much enthusiasm, even on TV. He got back to the dugout and was practically tearing guys’ arms off with the force of his high-fives.

Hawpe ended up going 4-for-6 (he got a single in the eleventh that pushed Atkins into scoring position and Atkins ended up scoring the winning run), and made a few tough catches. It wasn’t the sort of game where a guy just goes bonkers and wins a game virtually on his own (a la CarGo’s walkoff cycle game), but it was a great game from a guy who had more than a few of them. He was just a big contributor in the win—which was the story for lots of games that year.

Bye, Brad. I’ll miss you.

In my opinion, this year has had as many or more great games.

-Ubaldo Jimenez’ No-Hitter
-Ian Stewart’s Grand Slam game against the Padres for a 10-8 comeback win
-Rockies scoring 9 runs in the 9th inning to come back against the Cardinals.
-The next game where they came back from being down 6-0 against the Cardinals.
-Facing the Red Sox, Jason Giambi finishes another comeback by hitting a walkoff home run to take 2 of 3 games
-The never ending 9th inning where the Rockies scored 12 runs with 2 outs
-Colorado owning Zack Greinke 11-7
-Melvin Mora’ s Grand Slam game
-CarGo hitting for the cycle
-Losing 10-1, the Rockies rally to win 12-10 and complete a sweep of the Braves

So, the Rockies have had a No-No, a cycle, and even broken a few records in 2010. It’s been a great year for baseball! And the season is not even over yet.

by Mr. Rockie on Aug 26, 2010 2:51 AM MDT up reply actions

I still say 2007 had more great gmaes than 2009

Here’s my case

April 3, 2007 (D’Backs) (4-3 in 11 innings)
After a Stephen Drew single put the D’Backs ahead 3-2 in the top of the 11th inning, then rookie Troy Tulowitzki would get the game tying RBI double and score the winning run in the bottom half of the inning.

April 29, 2007 (Braves) (9-7 in 11 innings)
This game must have really broke John Kruk’s heart. Troy Tulowitzki turns an unassisted triple play in the 7th before the Rockies score two in the 9th to tie it and win on a walkoff two run Matt Holliday bomb in the 11th.

May 22, 2007 (@D’Backs) (3-1)
As legend has it, a day after Troy Tulowitzki went on his famous clubhouse rant for the team underperforming and reaching a season low nine games under .500, the rookie shortstop backed up his words by ripping a game winning 9th inning RBI double into the gap against the D’Backs. The team would follow Tulo’s lead and win seven games in a row.

May 27, 2007 (@Giants) (6-4 in 10 innings)
Five days later, Tulo was at it again. This time the Giants fell victim to a Tulo game winning RBI single in the 10th.

June 7, 2007 (Astros) (7-6)
Rockies fall behind the Astros 6-1 after five but rally for a 7-6 victory that includes three 9th inning runs. Oh by the way, Troy Tulowitzki had the game winning walk off RBI single. I’m noticing a trend developing here Oldfoagie :-).

June 21, 2007 (Yankees) (4-3)
(Day of the Purple Broom) Normally a 4-3 win on a Thursday afternoon game in June is forgotten. That changes however when that 4-3 win is to sweep the Yankees, knock them back to .500, and put them in serious danger of missing the playoffs. The win also makes the Rockies 5-1 against the Red Sox and Yankees, a truly joyous occasion and big step for the franchise.

July 6, 2007 (Phillies) (7-6 in 11 innings)
The Rockies found themselves trailing 6-1 after five innings. Then they started to chip away. They got two in the 6th, one in the 7th, one in the 8th, one in the 9th, and one in the 11th to win 7-6. The bullpen also provided six scoreless innings against a tough Phillies lineup after an unusually bad start by Jeff Francis.

August 18, 2007 (@Dodgers) (7-4 in 14 innings)
For half of one season, the Rockies owned the Dodgers. This 14 inning nail biter was the first of eight second half victories against the hated Dogs.

August 24, 2007 (Nationals) (6-5)
On August 24, a day that also could be know as National Colorado Rockies dramatic come from behind victory day the Rockies score five in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Nationals. As you might expect with the Nationals, an big error was involved.

September 18, 2007 (Dodgers) (9-8)
The first sign that something truly amazing was about to take place. Knowing they need a victory in just about every game remaining on the schedule, the Rockies win in stunning fashion on a two out two run walk off home run off the bat of Todd Helton. From here the Rockies soar like an eagle while the Dodgers sink like the Titanic.

September 21, 2007 (@Padres) (2-1 in 14 innings)
Everybody remembers game 163, but the forgotten gem in the Rockies 07 late season surge is the other game they had to face Jake Peavy. Franklin Morales gave the Rockies six scoreless innings of one hit baseball and left with a chance to win the game 1-0; but Manny Corpas blew the save in the 9th when he surrendered a home run to Adrian Gonzalez. The game would remain tied at one until the 14th inning when Brad Hawpe hit a 2 out dinger that would put the Rockies ahead for good.

September 27, 2007 (@Dodgers) (10-4)
Dodger domination and the magic carpet ride continue in LA. The Rockies win a franchise record 11 games in a row and their 7th in a row against the Dodgers. With three games to play, the Rockies once seemingly impossible playoff hopes are alive and well.

September 29, 2007 (Padres @ Brewers) (4-3 in 11 innings)
No the Rockies didn’t play in this game but I’m including it anyway. When the all time saves leader stood on the mound to face Tony Gwynn Jr. with two outs in the 9th, the Rockies were one pitch away from elimination. But in a moment that would foreshadow the pinnacle game in the Rockies 07 run, Gwynn Jr. would hit a game tying triple off Trevor Hoffman and keep the Padres champagne on ice for at least another inning. The Brewers would complete the comeback in the 11th. Thanks again Milwaukee.

September 30, 2007 (D’Backs) (4-3)
This day had it all. A no hitter for 5.1 innings by a rookie future stud, eyes glued to the scoreboard to see a four run comeback in Milwaukee, and a dramatic one run victory that included a three run Rockies 8th to set up one of the greatest games in baseball history.

Rocktober 1, 2007 (Padres) (9-8 in 13 innings)
If you don’t remember what happened in this game I have no idea why you are reading this.

For 2009 to catch 2007. We need something special to happen in these last 36 games.

Part of the Crew that Changed this Team's Destiny

I will remember Brad coming up with Holliday and Atkins and being part of the Todd and Toddlers stage. Now Todd is still here, and they have all left us (save Barmes)

I will remember some of those incredible throws from right field.

I will remember the first half of 2009 because he did keep this team alive that season.

May 1, 2004

So I was at Coors Field on May 1, 2004, day/night doubleheader. It’s the seventh inning of the first game, this guy comes in to pinch hit. This was before I seriously followed the minor leagues (really, followed them at all.) I look at the scoreboard, this guy’s got 0 AB. I’ve never heard of this guy before. Yep, this is his big league debut.

Brad Hawpe.

Hawpe gets a base hit. Yep. He’s batting 1.000 for his career now. So, of course, these being the 2004 Rockies, Hawpe gets the start in RF in the nightcap (because, you know, the Rockies had been playing Kit Pellow out there to that point.) Bottom of the sixth, the new guy’s at the plate with a runner on. Hits a shot down the left field line… I’m sitting a few rows back in left field, I don’t think it’s quite got enough… but yeah, it’s just over the left field fence.

And I thought… I’m gonna like this guy.

God speed, Bradley. You will be missed.

there was the time he hit a line drive off Mark Prior that bounced off Prior’s elbow so hard that it bounced all the way to the third baseman in the air. Not that I like seeing guys get hurt (Prior missed a few weeks after that) but that was memorable.

Woke up on the morning of my 21st birthday and frantically checked my phone for the score of the game I’d fallen asleep trying to keep track of in a crappy hotel in the mountains of southern Tennessee. Saw that the Rox had won in 14 on a Brad Hawpe home run. Off a lefty, no less.

The most incredible throw

i saw him make came sometime in 2005 or 2006, back when people still ran (stupidly) on Brad Hawpe. It was a pretty slow roller through the 1st and 2nd base hole, Brad had to range to within 20 ft of the right field line, and probably 50 ft towards the infield. Then in one motion he picked up the ball and unleashed a bullet to get the runner going 1st to 3rd. The reason it sticks out in my memory is the ball seemed to speed up half way to the bag. It was a perfect strike. Beat the runner by the smallest of margins, and the runner slid into the tag. Perfect throw.

thanks for the memories.

I'm guessing Red Sox on where he winds up

They have 2 outfielders (Cameron & Ellsbury) on the DL for the rest of the season, with an injury-prone LH hitter (Drew) still out there. Their main 1B (Youklis) is also gone for the year. Hawpe absolutely makes sense for them.

Though I don’t like the Sawx, that’s not a bad place for Hawpe to wind up: top-flight organization, solid group of teammates, somewhat in playoff contention. He could do much worse.

Although I keep reading Texas. Hope not, for Brad’s sake. After 7 years in Coors, he’ll melt in the heat.

when he struck out to end an inning he always just start taking off his batting stuff off right at home plate very quickly. Also the Braves game right before the ASG last year. I was there it was great.

He had two HRs in 2007 where I thought

“I might get this ball.”

One was his first of the year, against the Braves, that he ripped hard above the scoreboard.

The other was against the Cardinals, the 7th of the 7 game win streak that sort of got them going for the year. It was the first time i had gone to a game by myself, and it couldn’t have been a more pleasant night, and he hit a moon shot that i really thought was going to make it to me in the 2nd deck in right field.

Brad hits a pinch hit RBI double, sure we lost that game, but I was there after making my first pilgrimage down from Saskatachewan to Coors Field since 1997, just glad I got to see him play in person. It’s times like this that prove we do more than cheer for laundry, but for the men that put that jersey on and go out and play.

With those who don't give a damn about baseball, I can only sympathize. I do not resent them. I am even willing to concede that many of them are physically clean, good to their mothers and in favor of world peace. But while the game is on, I can't think of anything to say to them. ~Art Hill

I'll repost one from yesterday's Rockpile, as well:

First of all, I work for Easton, and was bummed when Hawpe stopped using our product. Anyway, during the ‘07 playoff push, I was the Packing supervisor and we got an order to ship some of Brad’s batting gloves to him at Coors Field. I enclosed a handwritten note with the order wishing him and the rest of the team luck and letting them know I was confident they’d get to the postseason.

A few weeks later, I received a package to my attention from the home clubhouse manager at Coors. It contained a signed pair of batting gloves from Hawpe.

Reading all of these stories

brought a tear to my eyes….I don’t really have one memory that stands out above the others – Seen him hit homeruns, gun down runners…and just give everything he had to this ballclub for the last seven years.

I will miss hearing your name called at Coors Brad….You deserved one last start at home!

I am beyond crestfallen.

I truly shed a tear. I haven’t posted my favorite moments because there are just too many. But I think the main thing is that I always felt supremely confident that somehow, someway he would come through with that clutch hit just when we needed it most. And last night, he did the same again.

I'd go with the homer against SD in '07.

I was stunned/gleeful that he hit it off a left-hander.

Even though I’ve been ripping him the past year or so….

Godspeed, no. 11. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks Russ

I felt Hawpe desereved some sort of recognition. It was quite easy to make.

The 2010 Rockies are done!!!!! Do you hear me Rockies? You have NO SHOT at making the postseason. In fact I guarantee you will not make the postseason. (Okay, now that I have removed all expectations go out and make me eat these words)

One general recollection

is that in early 2009 I don’t remember ever seeing a guy so comfortable at the plate. He would just step up and rake. What happened to that guy?

I'm with Maria

I don’t have a single, specific, stand-above-all-else favorite Brad Hawpe moment.

For me, it’s been the way he’s carried himself his entire Rockies career. His quiet stoicism, professionalism, demeanor…but wow, when he really got ahold of one, it would look majestic.

I loved those instances when he’d barehand a ball smacked off the out of town scoreboard and nail the runner, who wouldn’t even expect it coming. Even through his struggles, I always thought a home run could be just a Hawpe, skip, and a jump away.

I loved his quiet, unassuming, left hand presence in right, and in the batter’s box.

Brad, I am truly going to miss you on this ballclub.

So Long Hawper

Man so many memories just blend together… Love knowing any ball hit to right could be rocketed back in via his arm… Model player, teammate and role model, someone that kids should actually look up to in this day and age. One of the seventh graders I taught requested I call him Hawper the entire year cause of Brad. Hopefully the best comes for Brad cause he is a player who really deserves it.

lot of great memories of #11, to me, he was the Larry Walker of Right field with that cannon of an arm just like Tulo. Sad to see him go. =’(

Haven't seen this one mentioned yet.

The thing I’ll remember is the walkoff RBI double against the Braves on 7/12/09, right before the all star break. And the way my neighbor stared at me thru my window while I jumped around cheering.

Best of luck to him no matter where he ends up. I have a feeling we’re gonna’ kick ourselves for this one later.

Wow, this actually made me tear up.

I don’t think I can say just one favorite memory. Much like you all have said, it was a combination of so many things that made me a fan. Not only was he a great athlete, but he truly seemed like a great person, someone that was fun to be around and loved what he was doing. I’m so sad that I can no longer claim him as my favorite Rockie, but I wish him the best. Thanks for turning me back on to the Rockies, #11.

by MissR on Aug 19, 2010 10:34 PM MDT reply actions

Of course I am sorry that he is no longer on the Rockies but I hope my "favorite memory" is yet to come.

I can’t wait to meet him. I didn’t work tonight but as soon as it became official…my boss (head grounds keeper) and the Trop foreman immediately called me telling me that it was official. I predicted it about a month ago and they already knew I was a Rox fan so they figured that I’d be excited !
