The Rockies are already getting labelled by many as one of, if not the, season's biggest disappointments. Pride definitely should be at stake going forward even as the playoffs pull out of reach. I think a first goal for the remaining 42 games should be going from five to ten games over .500. It would restore an aura of respectability and from there we could see where the playoff picture is. Let's do it quickly Rockies. Get there by the end of the month, please.

the good news is that the Dodgers lineup really isn't looking any better
without Ethier, Martin, Furcal and Manny, it’s not all that daunting anymore.

How can a Giants win possibly be good for the Rox?
They are directly ahead of us in the division, in 2nd place. To even qualify for the Wild Card, you have to be in 2nd place. So it would seem getting from 3rd to 2nd would be the most pressing priority. I know this is based on the “we have several head-to-head games left with SF and only one with Philly” concept, but this is one reason I dislike the Wild Card. The idea of rooting for a team ahead of you in the division defies all logic to me.
Your plan roots for second place in the division and
three games out of the playoffs. Rooting for the Giants now still gives us a chance for both. I guess it’s a matter of whether the playoffs are more important to you, or second place in the division.

Without the Wild card we miss out on so many great baseball memories over the last 15 years. I do think winning the division needs to matter more but the Wild Card has done way more good than harm

I was advocating for a reallignment of the divisions and the Wild Cards having to play each other at the start of the playoffs to give the division winners more of an advantage.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Wild Card but I find that it’s biggest flaw is that it makes winning the division nearly irrelivant as long as you still make the playoffs via the Wild Card.

First place in the division is what's important to me
I don’t necessarily hate the Wild Card but I’m not a big fan. The race is supposed to be for the division crown. WC is a consolation prize, a backdoor into the postseason, and I wish we would not hear nor think about “the wild-card race” before September 20th.
I want you to conduct a poll with the players
as to whether they prefer making the playoffs via the backdoor, if the division is out of reach or not being in the playoffs at all. The presence of the WC option does not mean they still don’t want the division.

No, it just means settling earlier...
There was actually a case a few years back where the Dodgers and Padres ended the season tied for first, but the Padres won the division based on head-to-head while the Dodgers took the wild card. With a shot to still win the division on the line on the last day of the season, the Dodgers chose to rest their starters and simply accept the WC.
Ask the members of the 1993 Giants. They won 103 games. The Braves won 104. It will surely be the last time a team wins 100 games and doesn’t make the playoffs. But it was such an exciting race…
The Wild Card keeps as many as half the teams still in “contention” deep into September, and thus keeps those fans interested also, and that’s great. It also guarantees that the two best teams in the league will make the postseason, and without it a series like the 2004 ALCS would have never been possible.

EY2’s better than Herrera offensively in every single category, and a few of them aren’t close.
I still think Herrea is one of those guyd who won't trive untill they stick at the MLB level.

I like everyone else like his speed. I’ve always questioned his head. With more maturity: I don’ t know. Herrera may have less overall ability, but he’s mature beyond his years. He is baseball smart. The upside may not be as high, but I don’t think the down side is as low.

apparently Barmes isn’t out of the mix either according to a Renck post today that I think was addressing a comment I made in the Rockpile. I really think the team’s ready to move on another starter, but it would be two that might get moved to other teams this winter.

I'd actually be okay keeping Barmes in a utility role.
I’d want either EY2 or Nelson starting, I could see benefits for the backup being any of the other three.
I would like having Barmey as the super-utility guy. Think of the D he gave us when Tulo was on the shelf.

I’m as pissed off at the Rockies as anyone for their performance since the ASB, but I’m pretty sure all of the following are bigger disappointments than the Rox to this point in the season:
Mariners
Tigers
Cubs
Dodgers
Angels

With Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez on top of the rotation and what seemed at season’s beginning as a passable offense in that ballpark.
This followed closely by Detroit, who was an eyelash away from a playoff berth last season and added Johnny Damon and Jose Valverde, is getting great production from A Jack and INSANE production from Miggy Cab. Yet they have been absolutely putrid since the all-star break due to poor starting pitching and an absolute CRASH from Brennan Boesch. I expected more.
I didn’t really think much of the Dodgers chances this season.

I would maybe even include the Red Sox on that list, seeing as they’ll be 6 games out of a playoff sport after today, though they have been absolutely ravaged with injuries. Milwaukee was supposed to be better than they’ve played too.
