Well,
How anyone other than a Non-Rockie fan be on the Indifferent team is beyond me…
There is nothing to be suicidal about since the season isn’t over and it’s still baseball
Not really bipolar because I don’t get overly sad (except for Hawpe leaving)

RG? I no some don't care for leverage and clutch stats...
I’d like to know if what i’m seeing is true or not: That Tulo and Cargo do not hit as well late in games as they do early or middle. That Holliday and Helton did better late in 2007 than Tulo and Cargo do now. That we had a better mix of OBP and and sOPS+ team wide in leverage and clutch in 2007and 2009 than today.
I don’t have the time to research it. I am not trying to pick a fight or say in any way that Tulo and Cargo are bums. I think a closer look at how we go about getting our runs is in order. And could also help explain the road short fall. Tulo has delivered in some games late;but some thing is missing that I can’t put my finger on. Is it that we fail more against power pitching relievers and need some better fastball bats, or that the team’s good numbers as a group just come early against the three thru five starters of the league?

could be. Could be Brad Hawpe, or Seth Smith.
He’s hitting less than .150 in high leverage situations in 2010, not that good for a guy we were calling “Mr. Late Night” last season.
I'd like to see a Rockpile on that and how we compare to league averages.

That we ask someplayers to produce in ways not conducive to ther makeup and don’t use them to best advantage. In a way it’s sort of a misuse of matchups and again I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I agree. I've said for awhile now, that I didn't think Smith
was an everyday player. I was poo-poo’d roundly because 1) YOU WUV HAWPE 2) He hadn’t been given enough chances to prove himself.
I think Smith is a great off the bench guy. Last year, he was unbelievable and I think his makeup is as a supporting player, more than an everyday starter. I guess I see him as “Mighty Mouse” . I don’t mean that in a bad way.

I might be able to
As A starter Smith’s career numbers are .268 average, a .337 OBP and an .811 OPS. However as a sub he’s hitting .326, with a .429 OBP and a 1.044 OPS.
Looks like he’s just better in that role.

A guy who turns 28 in the fall, and has a career .811 OPS as a start with above average defense is better as a sub?
Yeah, his numbers are better as a sub so far, but you’re talking about a sample size of 681 PAs vs. 163 PAs. I have more confidence in the former sample size, which has yielded results that are quite valuable.
Since when do good teams relegate a potential 3-4 WAR player to the bench when there’s nothing better? Maybe the Royals…
Yes but if you use him against lefties he's going to give you nothing
By using him as a sub in those games you can dictate which at bat he will be most valuable to you. You want to compare 681 to 163 but not all plate appearances are the same when it comes to helping a team win games. Late and close PA’s (which Smith seems to excell at off the bench) are multiple times as important as four PA’s in a game where Smith starts and won’t affect the outcome.

Of course, if you start him vs. all righties, and he hits close to his career numbers, you may not have to worry about late and close situations.
Maybe he’s a platoon player (I’d rather not see him start vs. Kershaw or Hamels or whatever other tough lefty)… I know that PAs in the 7-9 innings seem more dramatic, but the reality is that if he doubles in three runs in a 5 run fourth, late and close won’t matter. His .904 OPS vs. RHP (who make up the bulk of pitches thrown) suggests that he’d be able to help out in all stages of the game.
His numbers against lefties are bad enough that I think he should be a platoon player.
He has an astonishing -20 wRC+ against lefties. I didn’t even know it could go negative. Against righties he’s at 138. If you play Spilly against lefties, then you can use Smith for a late game PH. Those three or four PA’s he missed by not starting would most likely have been outs anyway.
I agree he should get most of the starts against righties
but as bad as he is against lefties I don’t mind having him as a chess piece for Tracy to use when the bellpen comes in.
And I disagree about the importance of late game AB’s. If you have extra bullets late in the game, whether it be on the bench or in the bullpen, it completely changes the outlook of the game. Heck, that’s why the Pads are in first; they own the late innings.

He moves faster than Hawpe, and takes better routes (without citing UZR, I can only speak in relative terms as I’m less versed in the other defensive metrics). That frees Cargo to be free in CF or RF, and that amounts to good enough for me.
Smith was playing RF yesterday

Tracy has said he like Cargo in left @ Coors
Because there is more ground to cover in left there. Elsewhere, methinks you’ll see him more in right.
Obvious problem with that is that this guy is a star and you shouldn’t keep moving him around. There’s an argument to be made that his knee injury was due do his unfamiliarity with RF in LA.
I think most of us agree that Cargo profiles as a RF. But I don’t believe Tracy cares about profiles… hence we get the privilege of seeing Mora and EYJr in left…

Here's why Smith's a starter
1. He has a pretty good walk rate, both in the minors and the majors. His career minor league rate was 9%, with a high of 15.2% and low of only 7.7%.
2. His isolated power is blossoming, and should continue to stay in the .180-.220 range for the next few years. He has the plate discipline and the track record to hit with enough power for a corner OF.
3. Typically, he hasn’t been a free swinger, and his percentage of swings outside the zone hasn’t been much different than the league average in his MLB time. This year, however, he’s swung at about 9% more pitches outside of the zone. There could be a lot of reasons for this, but it’s not necessarily a permanent trend.
4. His BABIP is .269 this year. In the minors, it was consistently above .320 and last year, it was .324 in the majors (career .309). He’s just experiencing some bad luck, perhaps on contact or perhaps by swinging outside the zone a little more than usual. It seems like he has the acumen and the track record to correct that.
5. While his power is still plentiful (career high .240 ISO this year), his OBP has dropped, causing his line to not look as shiny this year. While he’s not a .378 OBP guy, he’s also not a .322 OBP guy. The drop seems mostly due to BABIP, though the 4% drop in BB% is also a factor. With better luck on BABIP, and cutting down on swings outside the zone a bit, he’ll get the OBP up into the .350 range. Add that to the power, and you’ve got a very good 80% time player.
The bottom line is, at worst, he’s a platoon player. But he’s definitely not John Vander Wal or Ben Francisco.
I can give you some info that I have.
The Rockies average 5.85 Runs Scored/game at home, with a standard deviation of 3.5. On the road, they score 3.55 with a standard deviation of 2.7. That is a fairly high SD for such a low mean, indicating that they have a high variance offense. In fact, there have been 27 road games where they’ve scored two or fewer runs. That is a lot. I don’t know if hitting late is such a factor; clearly they can do well at home, even late. Maybe they’re all allergic to sea level.
It's just not the Road home split....
How do we compare innings 7-9 compared to the league. If we are failing against bullpens in general or certain ones due to their make up; then these tendencies would be exacerbated on the road.

It looks like there weren't many slouches in the list of pitchers who have dominated the Rockies lately.
But only a few top notch pitchers. Barry Enright, James McDonald, and Daniel Hudson (Rockies won that game) are among the guys who don’t have a successful track record. You could maybe add Ted Lilly to that list as well.
James McDonald?
He’s VERY talented. Take a look at his minor league stats and you may change your mind about a lack of a successful track record. The guy has a very bright future.

No I'm just pointing out that other teams have hit him and
the Rockies can only use the “he has a great track record” exuse after being shut out on the road so many times before they have to look in the mirror to find the real problem.
(I dont get to hear much post game stuff so I don’t know what the Rockies actually say after these loses most of the time. I’m just using this as an example)

Our road offense is sub par. But many decent road offenses can lose to pitchers like these on the road too.

not that talented, he's still a fourth starter.
Of that list of young pitchers above, only Hudson projects as a mid-rotation starter or better.
Lilly does have a pretty long and successful track record, he consistently gets underrated.
But you can't be denying that McDonald has the talent to win at the major league level?
Or that he doesn’t have a good track record?

His MLB track record is lacking,
He’s got a 5.93 career ERA as a starter in the majors, he’ll be 26 in October, it’s hard to project that much success for him, at least as much as your statement seemed to imply.
That's what I meant to imply.
Not that those guys don’t have potential — I think Hudson can be very good — but they haven’t done much yet and aren’t on the Strasburg prospect level.
I was really just trying to look at what pitchers have shut down the Rockies lately on the road. Some are definitely ace types (Kershaw, Santana), while some haven’t had as much success.
No, I agree they're not "on a Strasburg level"
But I don’t think you should assume that any competent team would be inherently positioned to defeat pitchers like them, just because they aren’t Stephen Strasburg or similar. I argued against your positioning of McDonald because I think he is a good enough pitcher that could defeat ANY MLB offense. He won’t ALWAYS, or even regularly, do it, but even if we had 20 more road wins, that result wouldn’t have surprised me. Again, as I said below, it’s not meant to be a defense for our struggling road offense, I fully acknowledge its role in the circumstance. But if you look through any team’s year, they lose to young pitchers still building a resume once in a while.

I'd argue that saying his relatively short MLB track record is evidence that he should have been beaten...
… as the OP seemed to be isn’t giving him nearly enough credit. I see McDonald as in a somewhat similar position to Esmil Rogers right now, and I don’t think that any of us would be saying Esmil Rogers should be an easy win for any opposing team with an offense. Both pitchers get touched, and both can have futures in the majors where they’re winners.
Part of this also goes to the notion that many people seem to have that certain pitchers SHOULD be beaten regardless of any other factors if you have a good offense.
There are two elements to this argument that bother me.
1. The Inter-Determinant Element (Beyond Reputation)
2. The Obsession with Accomplishment
It seems that most fanbases tend to look within their own team for answers without considering the opponent more than a passing amount (I am obviously generalizing and not referring to specific in depth analysis.) To specify, there is an expectation that the team in question will either bring a good offense or a good pitching performance to the game, whereas the contribution of the opponent is lesser. This is barring reputation; when the team gets beaten by Roy halladay or Johan Santana, people are more willing to assign credit elsewhere. Yet when it’s Craig Stammen, it’s entirely the Rockies fault because obviously any capable offense would beat Craig Stammen, which I believe to be somewhat invalid. Craig Stammen also pounded down the Reds and Phillies this year, and it seems likely their fanbases probably said the same thing, and both of them have had better offenses than ours.
In regards to my second issue, pitchers like McDonald or Stammen or Rogers or even Chacin (both from opponents, of course) tend to be (mis)classified as given wins for any decent offense because their resumes are not spectacular, or even fully formed.
Normally when I make this argument, people assume I am trying to make excuses for the offense. This is not the case; our offense is clearly to blame in these losses. My two points are simply to remind people that a) credit for a bad performance at the plate is not to be thrust upon only a failed offense just because the opposing pitcher isn’t something special, and b), any MLB pitcher has the capability to defeat any offense at any time.
In other words, I think it’s possible that James McDonald STILL owned us even if our road offense were significantly better.
It’s an interesting question to consider (one I’ve brought up before), how much credit a pitcher deserves for flummoxing an offense, even if the pitcher and the opponent offense are struggling. Should Craig Stammen deserve no credit for his pitching performance because he’s an average 5th starter and the Rockies struggle on the road? I would argue no, but most people seem to think that that particular game (and it’s just one example) should have been won by any competent offense. I’m not sure that queston can be definitively answered, so I lean more towards the middle. I don’t feel embarrassed when I lose to any pitcher, unless the divide between their performance in that particular game and the offense’s in that particular game is clearly significant, and in cases like the McDonald game, I don’t think they were.

I think maybe you interpreted my statements wrong.
I wasn’t saying that James McDonald and Daniel Hudson and Barry Enright are crappy pitchers who any competent offense should beat. I was merely pointing out some of the pitchers that have dominated the Rockies’ road offense lately, and noting the ones that didn’t have the reputation of elite starters. Quite a few of the guys they have been beat by lately are known to be very good pitchers; those three guys are still fairly unknown at the MLB level. Again, I’m not implying that the Rockies suck just because they got beat by those guys. I was trying to answer OldFoagie’s question about who was beating the Rockies. I think the bigger issue is that the offense gets shut down so often on the road. So far in 2010, they have scored two or fewer runs in 27 out of 65 road games. That is a large number. That tells me more about their offensive approach at sea level than losing to a specific pither, regardless of his reputation.
I think maybe you interpreted my statements wrong.
I wasn’t necessarily referring to you specifically, but being that your post did inspire this one, I apologize if I did misinterpret anything.
I was merely pointing out some of the pitchers that have dominated the Rockies’ road offense lately, and noting the ones that didn’t have the reputation of elite starters.
Yes, this I understand, but as hopefully you can see, it does, in a sense, imply that something is wrong with losing to these pitchers. My argument is more what you say later on (“I think the bigger issue is that the offense gets shut down so often on the road.”) when it is who we’re getting shut down by. I guess your specific references to these pitchers made it seem like you were shifting the blame specifically to not winning these games because of who pitched them.
Even if that was not your intent, it did give me a good springboard for making a more clear argument based upon my feelings here, as usually it is trying to argue with fans after we lose to one of these pitchers who are not going to even consider the argument.
To summarize: I think that we shouldn’t worry about losing to pitchers like James McDonald, because anybody can. However, this is not meant to be any excuse that our offense should be let off the hook, because you’re totally right in saying the pattern is too scary to be excused. I just don’t think losing to young players without “reputations of elite” is necessarily all that relevant to what scale of skill you can expect out of them. Even Josh Fogg faced the minimum once, and I’d like to think it wasn’t JUST because the Seattle offense failed miserably. he had to do something right too.

Well, during the Lubick era, things would change
You know how Colorado sports fans are, they tend to follow a winner.
During the good years, I’m sure it was full all the time. And Lubick is a class act. Far classier than the way he was shoved aside.
But no, CSU doesn’t have the fanbase or tradition to support the team through successive losing seasons.

Really?
At Vanderbilt we just stayed in the parking lot all game drinking, at least until the administration started busting up the tailgates around gametime.
when my wife and i were first dating
she was in law school at CU. she had great tickets to the CU games, and we were going to go the the Oklahoma game. I had never seen a #1 team play, so I was kind of excited. About 30 mins before kickoff, I said “should we head in?”
pretty much met with blank stares.

That's... law students in a nutshell.
Vanderbilt’s football team is generally awful (though they did actually go 6-6 during my third year of law school) and since most law students went to undergrad somewhere else, they generally don’t really care too much about the sports teams.
I'd suspect that it's grad students in general
Unless you got your BA/BS from the same school, or unless your grad school has a better/more exciting football program, you just don’t care as much.
I’m definitely not a Rammie, for example.
I got my BS from a school with a virtually non-existent football program
then went to CU and never watched a football game. I usually just got annoyed on game days because it meant there were lots of people around campus on a weekend, and the traffic sucked.
Right
I got my BA from a school with a NAIA football program and then went to an SEC school… big difference there.

Gotta love the Giants writer talking about how it's important to do the little things right to make the playoffs . . .
. . . and then totally writes off the fact that the Giants had FIVE errors yesterday!
FIVE!
That’s not a small factor there . . . that wins them the ball game . . .
A little too post-modern on the Rockpile for me
Last night’s game reminded me of the one game I’ve been to this year. It was July 3rd, Ubaldo Day. He gave up 7 runs, but they crawled back into it and took the lead, before giving it right back. They eventually lost, but the grit to get back into that game impressed me.
That kicked off the pre-break streak.
So, yeah today is Crestfallen Day
but somehow that victory yesterday leaves me just a wee bit less crestfallen. And it’s Ubaldo Eve Day!

Call me crazy but I actually think the most underrated player in MLB is Albert Pujols
His numbers are so awesome that most people just kind of become numb to them and say “oh yeah, he’s the best” without really appreciating his greatness. He really should get a lot more recognition than he does for being one of the most outstanding players this game has ever seen.
The 2010 Rockies are done!!!!! Do you hear me Rockies? You have NO SHOT at making the postseason. In fact I guarantee you will not make the postseason. (Okay, now that I have removed all expectations go out and make me eat these words)

Except that
it’s a little hard to call a guy who’s won three MVP awards (including the last two) underrated. Except I guess to say that he can have an “off year” and still have an OPS over 1.000.
I'm pretty sure
His 9 all-star selections and 3 MVP awards are recognition enough…
Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

Yes but he's this generation's Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, or Willie Mays
and I just don’t think he gets enough recognition for being that.

I just know that the answer to the question
“If you could have one player to build your team around, who would it be?”
Almost everyone I’ve heard answer that question has responded “Albert Pujols”.
Perhaps it’s because everyone recognizes that he’s the best player, it has become status quo, so you think he’s unrecognized? I think it’s just become the standard, accepted fact, that he’s the best player of this generation.
Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.
by ShadowPenguin on Aug 26, 2010 10:49 AM MDT up reply actions
I think the other problem is that as good of a player as Pujols is he's just not a great character
That to me is part of what makes Babe Ruth legendary. Not only was he the best player, he was also the best character. Ted Willimas was a war hero, Mays was the “Say Hey Kid”, but Pujols really has quite a boring personality and I think that takes away from some of his star potential.

Yes
A great player who has character whether it be good or bad is going to be remembered more than a player with a vanilla personality.

I agree Pujols isn't really a "character", but he's not nearly as boring as some other MLB players.
At least not to me. I’ve heard him interviewed enough to know that he at least has a personality. many athletes seem to be lacking in that department entirely.

Funny stuff from "The Good Fight"
If I haven’t mentioned it before, I hate the f*cking Astros with the white, hot intensity of 1000 burning suns…which, coincidentally, is the average temperature in Houston.

if the Phils lose, we will need to make up just two games on Philly
Then, we would control our own destiny to the playoffs again. We already do with the Giants, Cards and Dodgers.

Well we actually control our own desitiny either way because even if the Phils win all their other games they will have to knock Atlanta off six times and if they do that we will catch the Braves instead

if they go 3-3 in those games, and both teams otherwise win out
That would be the scenario we don’t control.
Yes we do control it because we are four behind the Phils in the loss column right now
We could beat them in the game they have against us to knock it down to three games and then those three losses against the Braves would allow us to tie after game 162 and a play in game would be needed.

Ahh I see it now
And even if the Phils lose today we still can’t control it if they go 5-1 in those games, but that will be the only scenario left (I think) if Houston hangs on here.

Did someone say unicorns and rainbows?
At your service.

And yes. I know it’s a horse.
There's a place out west where the Powder River rolls off the Bighorn Mountains. It's a land of red walls, blue sky, and clean air, where the eagle glides high above the canyons and makes its nest in the rocks that overlook the valleys where the sagebrush and cottonwoods grow. This is ranch country - has been for more than a hundred years.
Well things have changed some since the early days, but there's still a thread of character and tradition that runs true from one generation to the next. You can see it in the way folks out here set a horse; you can hear it in the way they talk. And when the work's all done, there's nothing they like better than to get together at the one room schoolhouse under the red wall for another down home, homegrown, Western Saturday night.

The 2010 Rockies are done!!!!! Do you hear me Rockies? You have NO SHOT at making the postseason. In fact I guarantee you will not make the postseason. (Okay, now that I have removed all expectations go out and make me eat these words)

OMG
If Cook gets lit up in that start that’s unforgivable. That Philly game is the most important game left on the schedule.

Do you think it would make sense
For Deduno to start on Rogers’ next scheduled appearance if long relief isn’t needed? I kind of like Rogers in long relief and throwing Deduno in there as sort of a curveball against the Giants.
I don't, necessarily.
This would be Deduno’s first MLB start. If we win, say, all four of our next five games, I don’t think giving Deduno this opportunity would be the best idea for the team’s momentum. Rogers is still finding his feet, but I think he has a better shot at winning a game.

OT : OMG. I just rec'd some interesting news
you all know my mail fiasco. Well, it’s still rearing its head again.
I rec’d a call from LATimes saying they had tried to send me a refund check, but it was returned. The rep says, “Well, it’s only $8”. I said, “Put that puppy in the mail today.”
Then I called my dentist about insurance stuff and the coordinator tells me that my previous insurance company made a mistake. I said, “Oh no, how much do I owe?” She says, “Oh no, you’re getting a refund of $150.00!” I just said, “wow, thank you”.
I think I need to call every business I’ve ever dealt with in the past year…lol

LOL. This answer on Keith Law's chat made me laugh:
Keith (Providence): What do you think of Chris Nelson? He’s stayed pretty healthy this season, but obviously that is still a concern. His bat, on the other hand, doesn’t seem like a concern at all at this point. He’s got to be a lock to be a top 100 prospect, and maybe even has a shot at the top 50, no?
Klaw: I hate to get too excited because I talked him up the last time he was healthy and shortly after that he broke his hamate and came down with Ebola or something. But I have always liked the swing and approach and he could end up an above-average defender at 2nd. I’m just afraid to believe.
Oh Keith Law.

Another Rockies-related question:
Billy Beane (Oakland, CA): That Carlos Gonzalez trade looks pretty silly now, huh?
Klaw: I think I talked about this in my last chat, but for those of you asking about a prospect I was way off on, CarGo would be it. I gave up on him way too soon – he’s a major reason now you don’t see me dismissing tools guys in their early 20s even when the approach hasn’t improved enough.

Are you on the field level?
Or upper deck somewhere? Behind the Rockies dugout (toward home plate) is where I usually try to sit (section 112, I think).
I might go on Monday. Haven’t decided yet.
Field level.
I think. I don’t have the tickets on me atm, I could tell you for sure tomorrow if you’d like.
