Hey, hey.
I could have talked more, but then I would have talked non-stop for 40 minutes on site decorum and then have spoiled my history-laden post that’s coming out soon.

Some points I'd like to make..
Nice pod guys.
Ubaldo should’ve been rested more in August to protect him during the stretch run. He’s needed in Sept and Oct not July-Aug. Good point by Greg that its the mgrs responsibility to protect the pitcher.
Sept callups- Miller, Mckenry, Nelson and Blackmon are the guys I want to see. Also this negative talk about Matt Miller is driving me crazy. The Guy has crazy good splits and has hit at every level. Its wrong to compare him with Seth Smith even though they were drafted the same year. Seth is left-handed and was drafted higher out of a major college. Remember he was a late Sept 07 callup who hit his way onto the world series team. Matt has been blocked and deserves a shot. And the Rockies need a RH bat.

Greg and I both said
Miller deserves a shot, but that he has no long-term future with the club.

Miller's not a bad fifth OF
But he’s not a better hitter or fielder than Spilborghs. It’s sort of hard to convey that his MLB future is on some team’s bench and that he’s not exactly an upgrade to what the Rockies currently have without sounding negative.
Just making it to the MLB skill level is a tremendous accomplishment.
btw, why all this negative talk on Cole Garner?
He’s been ripping it up for CS, has as good a batting profile as Miller and is two years younger. I really don’t understand why you’re so harsh on him.
And yes, I realize you never actually said anything about Garner, I’m just trying to make a point about what you interpret as negativity towards Miller here.
Im just disappointed a player like Miller wasnt given a better shot..
When the club has a clear need for a RH bat. Miller will fall into the same trap Jayson Nix did, where he has to produce of else. Miller seems to be regarded in the same way EYJ was. Now Eyj has shown the team can use his skill set. Which btw I think the speed ey provides along with Dex at the top of the lineup will help with the road offense, a point Greg and Russ touched on in the pod.
I don’t have a problem with Cole. He’s younger has more power and is a switch hitter. I just believe Miller deserves a shot and his splits are a little better and less susceptible to matchup problems.

Garner's a right hand bat. They experimented with him switch hitting, but he dropped it.
There’s a marginal improvement w/ Miller in his ability to hit for contact against RHP’s, but it’s not enough to make up for the advantages Garner has in just about every other category, including OF defense.
Blackmon is not likely to get a call.
He’s not even Rule 5 Eligible this year.

Do sept callups start their clock?
I thought it didn’t. I would like to see Blackmon and Weathers get a shot. They both deserve it.

It starts the service time clock.
Weathers will be purchased this December, but he won’t get a callup. We’re not going to see Blackmon purchased until next year or directly after.

Actually what Tracy said about kicking himself
was that he would have been kicking himself either way, which means he could not have made a correct decision on Jimenez pitching the 8th, it could have been wrong either way, so in a sense he was defelcting all the blame. No one wants Tracy to take the blame and “fall on the sword” for every loss, but once in awhile to admit some fault would be nice. He’s right that he could have been wrong either way, but I think he should take the blame for not recognizing his pitcher was tired and making the best baseball decision to take the guy out and use a PHer in the 7th, or at least recognize it prior to allowing him to face Ethier, who owns him. He can say all day long that he asked Jimenez and Ubaldo said he was fine, but its not Ubaldo’s job to determine if he is ok to keep pitching, the player will almost always say yes, he’s a competitor, of course he thinks he can. It just seems like to me we are really minimizing what effect a manager has on the outcome of the game. If its so small, why even worry about who to hire, just hire some clown off the streets and pay him nothing to do it.
I do believe the players have a much larger effect on the outcome of the game than the manager, but every now and again a managerial decision does play a significant factor in the outcome of the game and the decision w/ Jimenez was one of those times, IMHO. Having said this, I am not ready to can Tracy over this decision, but I do believe it was a poor one and the players might respect him taking some of the blame.
"Whenever I see an old lady slip and fall on a wet sidewalk, my first instinct is to laugh. But then I think, what if I was an ant, and she fell on me. Then it wouldn't seem quite so funny."
Jack Handy quote
Ubaldo was pulled early in his previous start..
And I think that weighed on Tracy’s mind since the pen blew up. So this time he gave Ubaldo a longer leash and both Ubaldo and the pen blew up. Its like when you’re playing Risk and all the pieces are in place to take over Kamchatka but the dice keeps coming up snake eyes.
