PrintIt wasn't looking good for the Rockies when the ninth inning started. Down 0-1, the offense had been mostly silent up to that point. Dexter Fowler led off the top of the ninth with a walk. Carlos Gonzalez stepped to the plate and worked the count full. Then BAM! A hit to Triples Alley, or the place where the Giants' dreams of victory go to die. Cody Ross was kind of hilarious on that play. Fowler scored. CarGo slid into third base as Freddy Sanchez's throw wound up going into the stands. CarGo advanced to home plate on the error. Rockies lead the game!
1-2-3 bottom of the ninth! The Rockies win!
Still, for eight innings the offense left Jorge De La Rosa out there for the loss. But a win is a win is a win.

Football fans are a different breed
Their season isn’t long enough to provide statistically meaningful samples, and it’s almost impossible to isolate for individual performance like you can in baseball, which means that you have a lot of nonsense flying around about football players.
As a fan of just about every sport, I gotta say that baseball fans put way too much emphasis on statistics, football fans do it even worse, and hockey fans from Calgary are worse than them all.

I'm a stat nerd - it's what I do
So I look at a sport like football and say “16 games? Anything can happen in that few games. I need a bigger sample”.
Nothing but baseball provides the stats-inclined nearly as much pleasure.
Sample size is completely different though. You look at football and say “16 games? You can’t get anything from that!” However, baseball players only get 4-5 appearances at the plate per game and the number of things that they can do in those 4-5 appearances per game require 162 games of data to work for you. You can strike out, ground out, single, triple, double, HR, walk, etc. All those things affect different many of the stats there are.
In football, in those 16 games (let’s talk about RB as our position) a running back doesn’t just get 4-5 touches per game, he gets 15-25. That averages out to about 320 touches per year to average your stats like Yards per rush.
So games played isn’t really what you should be looking at. Sample size in baseball is counted in PA after all, not games played.

The point is that baseball sample sizes approach statistical significance over one year.
Whereas in football gathering sufficient data takes several years. As such, there’s not a whole lot of places that football fans can go to make sense of their team’s or players’ performance.

We did
but then Russ got everybody who was on that gamewrap thread together, and we all got on another blog and flew back over the game thread, and landed there, and then Russ set off a nuke, but it didn’t go off, so Rox Girl had to detonate it. and they did it wrong. How do you do that when making a baseball field?

That and when he bobbled the ball, they were majorly heckling him.
Throughout the whole game, they were chanting “he’s a bum!” and saying “19, you suck!” “You suck, Speilberg!”.
There was this one guy talking crap to him the whole game, and Spilly was talking back to him (Go Spilly). My dad said it wasn’t very nice, but that jerk deserved it.

I had a long day of classes myself, and was actually performing a DJ gig in Boulder during the game. I had the restaurant owners leave one TV on with the Rockies game—and I was rockin’ a Rockies hat and a Rockies shirt I got for doing the Grounds Crew Challenge back in June (also won the jersey, but that’s a diff story).
At the start of the 9th inning, my DJ partner was playing the last track in his series, I had to prepare to mix in my track (we use two different mixers so we cue each other then manually mix back and forth). Then Fowler walked.
64 bars left, Brian Wilson brought in. 40 bars left, CarGo takes up a 3-2 count. I needed to mix in at 32 bars. 36 bars…..BROKEN BAT INTO THE GAP……..OMG IT’S OVER ROSS’ HEAD……OMG FOWLER WAS GOING TO THE TIE THE GAME….I completely lost focus on the music for that moment and just went nuts! Then, when that ball went out of the play….wow. What a moment.
Then, I snapped back into reality and got the track mixed in and played the rest of it with a huge smile on my face—especially with Huston went 1-2-3 in the 9th.
Man, that friggin ROCKED. WEEEE’RE COMEN BACK! Good to see San Dieguh continuing their descent too :)

On a hilarious note
I was playing MLB2k10 during the game and my player-created pitcher helped the Rockies win 20 games in September his Rookie year, eventually leading them to the world series against the Red Sox. I was slated to pitch game 7 and pitched my way to a 2-1 lead in the 9th with two outs when Jim Tracy pulled me for Rafael Betancourt. We wound up losing 9-2.
I lol’d.

is anyone else as concerned as i am about how hard huston street is getting hit?
three well hit balls just happened to go into gloves. that doesn’t instill much confidence.
It looked, to me, like he may have aggravated an injury in the ninth inning of the game
against the Dodgers on Sunday. That’s what I think (as does Chris Iannetta). With that being said, the only one of those pitches that was left up was the one to Huff. Ishikawa was looking for something down in the zone to hack at, and Posey somehow put the barrel on a ball that was 6 inches off the ground.
