It doesn’t matter how well the Rockies pitcher does in the 7th and the 8th if the Rockies don’t score any more runs. Outs are precious, especially on the road.
Sure, but with 1 out and nobody on,
there’s no real guarantee that your pinch hitter will get on.
So might as well save your bench for a bigger situation.

I fail to see how the pitchcount is relevant
It’s not like it was the third inning. Rockies are down one, on the road, can’t hit an erratic Bumgarner, they HAVE to maximize their scoring chances. They have a good bullpen. They wasted 11% of the future outs just to keep in a pitcher that doesn’t get an out the next inning.
It’s like everyone is just counting on the ninth inning magic and suspending logic in the meantime.
You know we're shorthanded in our bullpen tonight, right?
Esmil was pitching well. There was no reason not to expect him to keep it a one-run game, and the middle of the order was coming up next inning.

our bullpen has been great – but are tired – and should be given some rest whenever we can right now. Esmil has a very good bat – and was at a really low pitch count – no need to get mad at Tracy for leaving him in at that spot.

I understand I could have been wrong
Rogers certainly could have induced the double play there and the Rockies could go on to score, etc.
But the point is that the likelihood of Rogers allowing zero runs vs the bullpen is zero, and the likelihood of Smith getting a hit vs Rogers is non-zero.
Hindsight is always on everybody's side.

Before everybody leaves for the night I want to say I've enjoyed my time on PR this year...
The plans I had for my release from here fell apart today. Where I’m going next I won’t be able to take a computer. I’ll be Ok but off the net for a while. Don’t worry about me I’m fine. But if I don’t pop up before the season is over; I have enjoyed everyone and will miss you all. Olfoagie signing off.

Nelson was kept out of the Sky Sox game tonight in rainy Tacoma.
He will on a morning flight from SEA-TAC airport to SF tomorrow. Sky Sox broadcaster Dan Karcher mentioned early in the game tonight that the other call-ups from the Sky Sox would likely take place after next Monday’s season finale against Sacramento.
Buchholz is also apparently coming.
