Who plays first for us next year?

Im not sure what we have in the minors. But we all know Helton and Giambi are past their time. The Reds have a first baseman by the name Yonder Alonzo who is never going to beat out Joey Votto, I think we should look into trading for him.

Anyone else have any ideas, please dont say Prince Feilder.

At first I thought we should trade for Dan Uggla and move him to first but we would have to give up to much for him.

Until he retires or there is an apparent heir to his throne, I’m going to assume Helton continues to be the usual every day 1st baseman for this team.

Is it hockey season yet?

Helton is my favorite player

but he makes to much money for what he does on the feild. He is a great leader and the greatest Rockie of all time. We need to address this soon.

Hey, welcome to the row, glad to have you!

The Todd Helton question has been one we’ve mulled over the past 6 months and none of us have reached an entirely satisfactory conclusion yet, but it’s made for good discussion. I wouldn’t complain about Paul Konerko, personally.

All that said, this fanpost would probably be better served as a question in a Rockpile. We try to reserve fanposts for articles written by our users (like the Physics of Baseball series), or in the case of potential postseason/meetups/stuff like that, we’ll allow the “Hey are you coming to the BBBQ” or “Ticket Swapping” fanposts.

We tend to get a lot more comments on short topics like these in the Rockpile discussion threads. Appreciate your comment, can you give it another shot in the Rockpile?

might be a dumb question,

but how do I post on Rockpile?

go to the article on the front page named rockpile

click on the comments, and post on whichever comment you want, or create your own. There is a new one each day. It is where we do the majority of the discussion.

Andrew

if he followed your advice, his question wouldn’t be available for discussion for longer than one day. This way it can be continued through the end of the season.

Why?

As rockieprogress has stated this helps with the duration of a subject, but it also keeps some one from having to go through every post in the rockpile to talk about a specific subject. For example check out Denver Stiffs the nuggets SBnation site that run the way I wish this one did.

The devil you know

Not sure if Melvin Mora has been suggested in previous discussions, but he’d be an affordable 1B platoon who has some versatility around the IF, and has shown there is still some life left in his bat.

We could do worse.

This is kinda tricky

You have to find someone who’s good enough to play every day if necessary, but also is OK with being Todd Helton’s backup if Helton is even slightly healthy and productive. I think that rules out the Adam Dunns and Derrek Lee’s of the world.

And while Melmo has been great this season, and Giambi has been OK, I wouldn’t count on repeats or construct the roster they way it was this season.

Maybe Aubrey Huff? He’ll be a free agent after the season. He’s LH, but he’s low risk and can also fill in in the OF if needed. And probably wouldn’t break the teams budget.

Kila or Alonzo might be OK as well, though at this point I might like a veteran rather than a rookie while we’re in our contention window

Huff loves Frisco

I bet they re-sign him.

Renck mentions a name today I think is brilliant.
Manager Jim Tracy said Thursday that adding an “impact bat” is a top offseason priority. The Rockies will target catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez, if he becomes a free agent, but he could be out of their price range

Now, I’m not that guy who gets all excited about unobtainable names, but Martinez might be worth throwing a good-sized three-year deal at. Right handed bat, not a defensive liability at either 1st Base or Catcher, hits for power AND average, and a prime candidate for a “Coors Field Bump”.

Sub three starts a week for Helton at 1st and start 2/3 of the other games at catcher? That solves a LOT of problems on the Rockies. Toss him in the 6th hole behind Helton (5-hole with the right-handed platoon) and just watch him drive in runs.

Martinez and a left-handed starting pitcher would make for a pretty exciting offseason.

I would definitely be happy with VMart

Though I’d bat him behind Tulo. An extra bit of slugging behind Tulo could be very valuable.
