Rockies Contractual Situations
Man, this season is starting to get really reminicent of 2007 and I'm already looking towards the future. With so many young guys on this team it seems like we already have a solid core that could get us a World Series title if they just add a couple more additions. But what I'm wondering is if anybody knows what type of contracts many of our young players are under right now and if we are going to sign any of these youngin's to long terms deals, most importantly Cargo.
I've looked all over the internet but all I can find is the contract situations for this year. If anybody knows any information on this subject I would greatly appriciate if you posted it. Personally I think we have to give Carlos as much money as humanly possible so that he doesn't get persuaded by the Yankees, Phillies, Red Socks, etc. Same pretty much goes for Tulo and Ubaldo. I'm not very familiar with how the salary deal works in the MLB but I figure if we can build around these guys and manage to keep Street, Fowler, Stewart and EY2 we should be able to be good for a long time. Thanks, and go Rockies!
Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Thanks
I’m not really sure what a lot of that stuff means though. As long as we have our core group of guys for at least 2 more years that’s comforting, but definatly would love to see them be Rockies for their entire careers.

From that it looks like
Hammel, Stewart and Fowler are all free agents after this season. I hope we can resign them

No.
You cannot declare free agency until you have 6 years of service time. None of the three will have anywhere close.

All that means is they don't have a longterm contract
We have all of them under team control for at least three more seasons if not four.

Tulo, Ubaldo, and CarGo are all under the Rockies control through 2014, I believe. Ubaldo signed a deal prior to last season that is unbelievably team friendly, and Tulo is in the 2nd year of a 6-year, $31M deal that he signed prior to the 2008 season. CarGo is under contract for 1 more year, then he will have 3 seasons where he is arbitration-eligible before he can become a free agent, so he will likely be looking at a rather hefty raise in the next two years (Scott Boras is his agent as well).
For the rest, Chris Iannetta has 2 years remaining on a 3 year/$8M deal. Jorge De La Rosa is a free agent at the end of this season. Young is under control for 4 or 5 more seasons. I believe Seth Smith is under control for 2 more seasons. Huston Street has 2 years remaining on a contract that I believe is 3 years/$22.5M. Ian Stewart should be under control for 2 more seasons.
There's a place out west where the Powder River rolls off the Bighorn Mountains. It's a land of red walls, blue sky, and clean air, where the eagle glides high above the canyons and makes its nest in the rocks that overlook the valleys where the sagebrush and cottonwoods grow. This is ranch country - has been for more than a hundred years.
Well things have changed some since the early days, but there's still a thread of character and tradition that runs true from one generation to the next. You can see it in the way folks out here set a horse; you can hear it in the way they talk. And when the work's all done, there's nothing they like better than to get together at the one room schoolhouse under the red wall for another down home, homegrown, Western Saturday night.
Both Smith and Stewart have fouryears before being able to declare free agency.

I was just going off the top of my head in terms of what I thought their service time was to this point. That Google can be hard work sometimes, you know.

The link to Cots above has accurate service times from the beginning of this year.
Just add one for each year for an estimation of years until FA.

Nice
What is the deal with arbitration with Cargo? I’m not sure what that means.

Arbitration is a salary acquisition process that players of 3 or more service time are allowed.
Players who have less than three years of service time (with some exceptions, explained below) do not have any say in their salary. They are played league minimum $400,000 + the minimum amount they must get through mandatory yearly raises, usually just a couple extra thousand.
After hitting three years, still several seasons from being able to declare free agency, players gain arbitrational rights, meaning unlike before, they can have at least some input into their salary. Players are allowed to dictate a salary number to their team. If the team accepts the offer, then the contract is signed right there. If they don’t, the team submits their own salary number for that player, and an MLB arbitration panel will decide what the player gets paid between the two. Most of the time with the Rockies, the players and the team will negotiate this agreement before it goes before a panel.
The exception to the arbitration service time rule is that of the Super Two. While everyone with 3 or more years is guaranteed arbitration, some players with less can also receive arbitrational rights. The top 17% of players with less than 3 years of service time also get arbitrational rights. This offseason, Stewart will not have compiled 3 years of service, but will still have arbitrational rights because of this exception. Similarly, Jason Hammel has not quite attained 3 years going into 2010, but had arbitrational control anyway as a Super Two. Hammel and the Rockies agreed on his 2010 salary before going before a panel.

Isn't CarGo going to be a Super two?
He had 2 seasons where he was up for an extended time but not the whole year.
The 2010 Colorado Rockies: We may have lost the battle, but not the war. It ain't over till it's over.
No.
Only Stewart will qualify as a Super Two this season.

After the season ends, I'm going to be writing an article that explains the current conditions for every player in the system.
Including minor leaguers. keep your eyes open.

Here is a list of the contractual status of every player on the 40 Man Roster, just since there seems to be confusion.
The following players have already signed contracts for 2011. There is no negotiation that has to take place. Every one of them will show up to Spring Training (unless they’re traded or released) already knowing what they’ll be paid.
- Todd Helton
- Aaron Cook
- Huston Street
- Rafael Betancourt
- Troy Tulowitzki
- Manny Corpas
- Chris Iannetta
- Ryan Spilborghs
- Ubaldo Jimenez
The following players have contract options. The team will get to decide whether or not they play for the team next season at an already determined amount of money.
- Jeff Francis
- Miguel Olivo
The following players are not signed to a contract for 2011, and have enough service time to declare free agency.
- Jeff Francis (if his option is turned down)
- Jorge De La Rosa
- Miguel Olivo (if his option is turned down)
- Jason Giambi
- Melvin Mora
- Joe Beimel
- Jay Payton (will be purchased today)
The following players are not signed to a contract for 2011, do not have enough time to declare free agency, but do have enough for arbitrational rights. These players are still property only of the Rockies (unless non-tendered or released), and will negotiate with the team during the offseason to determine their 2011 salary.
- Clint Barmes
- Jason Hammel
- Taylor Buchholz
- Manny Delcarmen
- Matt Belisle
- Ian Stewart (as Super Two)
The following players are not signed to a contract for 2011, do not have enough time to declare free agency, and also do not have enough for arbitrational rights. These players are still property only of the Rockies (unless non-tendered or released), and will be assigned a salary by team during the offseason, or in some cases, negotiate for a multiyear contract.
- Seth Smith
- Dexter Fowler
- Carlos Gonzalez
- Franklin Morales
- Matt Daley
- Greg Reynolds
- Esmil Rogers
- Jhoulys Chacin
- Samuel Deduno
- Edgmer Escalona
- Hector Gomez
- Jonathan Herrera
- Mike McKenry
- Chris Nelson
- Juan Nicasio
- Matt Reynolds
- Chaz Roe
- Eric Young Jr.

If these are the only players the Rockies don't control...
from a contract standpoint next season…
The following players are not signed to a contract for 2011, and have enough service time to declare free agency.
- Jorge De La Rosa
- Jason Giambi
- Melvin Mora
- Joe Beimel
- Jay Payton
I am very excited about next year too!!!
Oh, and I loved this post. It makes it clear, for a casual fan, to understand perfectly. Thank you very much! Rec’d.

It's unfortunate that we don't control DLR, and probably Beimel too
