Rockies sign Willy Taveras to Minor League Deal

RT @RealRockies: #Rockies sign outfielder Willy Taveras to a Minor League contract with an invite to Major League camp.

Loved Willy T as a Rockie, but doubt he does anything other than fill Jay Payton role.

That's kind of a surprise

I seem to remember Willy T leaving on not-so-good terms after Hurdle benched him.

Maybe he’s been humbled a bit. The year he went to Cincinnati, I made a trek to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs and Reds play in April. The Reds won big, but 2 things I remember from that game. First, the wind off of Lake Michigan is really cold in April, and second, Willy Taveras had 3 hits. I was blown away.

And to be honest, if the team would rather have Herrera’s glove to couple with Lopez’s bat at 2nd, and they don’t mind letting Giambi go, Taveras would fill more the EY role than the Payton role with the big club. Taveras can definitely fly. Not a bad guy to have on your bench in the 9th if that’s the direction the team would go.

I should say that I agree with you that he’d be this year’s Jay Payton. But he could be a bench body with the big club, except we have Giambi for that.

He had a REALLY promising start to his career

It makes me sad to see how pathetic he has been the last couple seasons. He wasn’t even great in 2008 despite stealing 68 bags. Hopefully he turns it around in CSP this year and can be our pinch running weapon later on in the season.
