2011 MLB Draft: Colorado Rockies Continue Pursuit Of Additional Talent
When June comes rolling around, the Colorado Rockies will hold the 20th overall pick in MLB's Rule 4 First-Year Player Draft. That selection would have moved up three picks to No. 17, but the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, and the Milwaukee Brewers all failed to sign their first-round choices. As a result, those teams received a compensatory pick slotted immediately after where they selected in the 2010 draft order, giving the D'Backs two picks in the top 10 (No. 3 & No. 7).
As I said back in November, I wasn't going away from Purple Row; rather, I was just shifting priorities. For the majority of you who don't know, I gained my chops around here during the 2005 draft when Rox Girl and I went back and forth over the Rockies' draft picks that year. I believe we made it through at least 40 rounds.
Anyway, I want this to be a weekly Friday edition during the college season to keep everyone up-to-date on who's rising, who's falling, and everything in between. So this will highlight important games and players each week as well as a longer look at a player of interest to the Rockies.
In lieu of doing any of that this week, I would like suggestions from everyone on what they would like to see in this. Given that I have a week to work on this, I should be able to handle most requests.

Excellent idea Russ
I think I’m really going to enjoy this series.
One thing I would like to see is some sort of list with a little writeup of the top players at each position. That list could include both players who might go very early in the draft as well as players the Rockies might be interested in or at least could realistically get (This could be difficult to project but at the very least readers will gain knowledge of some up and coming prospects from all around baseball and hopefully this will hit all the players the Rockies end up drafting in the first few rounds.) Maybe do a different position on the diamond each week just so we can get a look at some of these guys.
Would anybody else be interested in this?

Thanks.
This is a good idea. I’ll keep it in mind.

I love me some draft talk
I think this should be the year we draft Todd Helton’s Replacement.
Ricky Oropesa.
Clint Barmes is not a good hitter.
Free Chris Nelson.... again.
I'll definitely
look into him. Need to keep the USC contingent here happy.

Well yeah, obviously...
Meanwhile the Ducks fans on the site can still appreciate Joey Wong and their BCS appearance.

Love Oropesa but...
We’ll need Helton’s replacement a bit sooner. Fortunately, the Reds have him and don’t need him so a deal can be worked out easily.
Go Bruce!
Great Idea Russ
When I first joined we had pretty good articles about the draft and the last couple years they died away. I look forward to seeing them again.

Nice,
There are some players I’m keeping my eye on for our selection.
first is Josh Tobias OF Southeast Guilford H.S. (S.C.) I’ve seen him listed at ever position minus pitcher and catcher. Frankie Piliere of mlb fanhouse had this to say about Josh.
If electric tools are what you desire, look no further than Tobias. A switch-hitter, Tobias is far superior from the right side and showed off plus big-league power and outstanding bat speed. The swing is very compact, and he gets to the pitch inside as quickly as any player at the event. Consider also that he was probably also the fastest player at the event. Guys who can fly and hit the ball out of the park are a rarity, so this kid will be exciting to watch.
Second is Bubba Starling OF/RHP Gardner-Edgarton H.S. (Kan.) . 6th best high school QB prospect with a commitment to Nebraska. We love QB’s for some reason, so makes sense. I’ve heard that he has a solid low-mid 90’s fastball, but his true calling will probably be the outfield, where he boasts plus power, great speed, and athleticism.
“obnoxiously talented baseball player” according to Keith Law
Overall, I’m really excited about the next draft.
A few more links for you
From what I've heard, Starling will be an extremely tough sign.
However, Zach Lee was perceived that way as well.
Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.

So was Matzak
And Parker. The team recently hasn’t been all that concerned with signability. Plus, if there were no issues there, he would be a consensus top 10, perhaps top 5 in terms of talent.
Yeah he's a much better two-way prospect than even Parker was/is.
But, he may be tougher to sign than Matzek and Parker. If he falls to the Rockies, though, they absolutely need to go for it.

Yes,
I feel that signability problems are overstated sometimes. When you waive 5 million in front of an 18 year old’s face, it’s not too hard to make it happen.
A few other middle infield prep prospects with many tools I’m looking at are Francisco Lindor and Javier Baez. One of the many strengths in the draft…
is Dante's kid
eligible to be drafted yet?
Clint Barmes is not a good hitter.
Free Chris Nelson.... again.
how many does he need to sign then
because I would be willing to pitch in a sandwich or two

Russ;
I’d like to see a periodical orginizational needs chart vs whom is availabe. To draft the best athelete is cool if you are teaching them right. Sometimes when you need a firstbasemen; you need to draft one. If you updated that once a month I’d be happy.

"When I was pitching 90's in the seventies; I never thought I'd be pitching 70's in the nineties!" Frank Tanana
I can develop a separate page for that.
Let’s see how my time works out.

Well, OK
With only one pick, the whole story may seem a bit anti-climatic from a Rockies perspective, as other teams will be selecting up to four players.
Maybe we could start by overviewing how teams get the picks they get. What are the rules, and why do the Rockies not get either more picks, or get to stand up sooner on the list.
