Discussion: Baseball!
This has to be the worst part of the offseason for teams that aren't still playing. We sit, we watch, we gab about the other teams, and more importantly, we all form strong opinions about our own players. We haven't really heard anything from the front office yet, so everything we're talking about is either speculation or extrapolation from other commentary we've heard from the front office.
Because I'm up to my nose at the office today, I'm going to simply pose a question to you and then let discussion explode like it tends to:
If you could add any Rockies player, past or present, to this roster in hopes of fixing it, who would you add?

Can I spin this a take a year from an ex-Rockie?
If so then I want 1989 Bret Saberhagen to play for the 2012 Rockies

For the sake of filling holes that are currently on the roster,
I want 2008 Aaron Cook or 2010 Ubaldo Jimenez.

So yeah, thanks to yours truly we have two Rockpiles this morning.
I’m going to leave this one up too though, for it’s own discussion. The other one’s more of a typical link dump that I was incredibly late for (Internet and health issues had a bad combo this a.m.)
The real Rockpile is up...
Keep this discussion going here if you wish, and move everything else to the Rockpile.

Easy
Matt Holliday. Right handed power bat that plays plus defense. He gives us enough offense between CarGo and Tulo that we can take our time with 3b.

i totally picked Holliday as well.

I dunno about the plus defense part
But yeah, Holliday is a beast at the plate.
I would also like the alien that took over Manny Corpas’ body in the latter part of 2007, who was next to unhittable.

I'll go along with Holliday as well
(unless we also have to take the tendonitis he’s battling at the moment)
Outfield of Holliday, 2nd-half Fowler, and Gonzalez….
/drool
3rd base would still be an issue but we could better afford a Wigginton or Nelson there if we had a Holliday in the lineup.

Holliday for sure
Oh man, how awesome would he be back in left, hittin clean-up, running the clubhouse, and scoring game winning runs in play-in games?!* I’d accept another Ian Stewart/whoever platoon at third, and a roll of the dice the young pictures we already have, if we could solve the RH power-hitting OF problem in the form of a bonafide winner and attitude adjuster that is Matt Holliday.
*And score he did. Even if his hand didn’t touch the plate, the blood coming out of his face did. And that should count at least as much as a hand!

yeah
I officially change my pick to Matt Holliday. I miss that guy.
Thanks!
I’m pretty creative. No big deal. ;)

it's incredible how much
I’ve forgotten about him. I totally liked Atkins – those 2006 numbers we so good. 1 shy of 50 2bs + 3bs, 1 shy of 30 home runs, more walks than strikeouts. Goddamn

Srs question
Has anyone done a study into why young(er) players fall off cliffs? Every time I think about Stewie and others a large part of my brain thinks “but he MUST be fixable, he’s been great before, he’s not old, so he can be again”.
Not that I know of
it’s probably pretty multifaceted though. Although I’ll tell you that I think between being bounced between levels like a ping pong ball and being injured on and off – and particularly to start off the season, I think it explains something of why Stewart fell off of a cliff.
Some athletes just take longer than others and I think the Rockies also have a few things working against them and their players being more able to adjust.
Hopefully Stewart does next season what Alex Gordon did this season and we can all be happy forever.

That's just it. I simply can't believe he is now a terrible player forever.
I just hope he can be fixed by April.
I'm stuck between 2010 first half Ubaldo
And early 2000s Todd Helton

Dude, after thinking about it for a while
It has to be Todd Helton in 2000. I don’t care about lack of right handed bats that would be a truly impact addition, even playing in Coors field post humidor.
1999 Larry Walker would have a huge impact as well. 2006 Atkins would be awesome so we would have a decent 3B but he just simply wasn’t as good as these other seasons. Ditto for Holliday although his 2007 was closer.

I think the consistency of 2000 Todd
is what’s so attractive about him – you know if you’re getting 2000 Todd, you’re getting a .300-.360 hitter 8 years out of 10 with plus defense all the while.

Larry Walker
He’s raise this team’s baseball IQ dramatically. Along with Pujols, he’s the smartest baserunner I’ve ever seen.
Pretty fair with the stick, too.
Holliday would be my knee jerk
but after consideration I am going with Walker, a tru 5 tool player 1995 Walker would let us go Fowler, Cargo, Tulo, Walker, Ianetta, Helton, Ellis, Stewie/Pacheco

2001 Giambi would also be a vey defensible answer

Nothing against Walker...
… but I would argue that the 2007 vintage of Matt Holliday was as good as any single Larry Walker vintage. Walker had better peak years statistically, and he sustained greatness for longer than Holliday has so far, but Walker played pre-humidor and in an era when offensive numbers leauge-wide had never been more rediculous.
I’m not saying Walker wasn’t a legit stud. But – and this is one of those things that’s obviously totally impossible to prove either way (which is maybe why it’s fun) – I firmly believe that if you put a in-his-prime Larry Walker on the field alongside Matt Holliday in 2007, Holliday still has the better year.
And he’ll bat RH and bleed for you. We need that player.
Just a small town kid who thinks Coors Field on a sunny summer Saturday night is the best place to be on this or any other plane of existence. When a late-inning Todd Helton go-ahead homerun is added to this scenario, my brain melts.
Yet, when look at a stat that is Park, League, and Era adjusted (WRc+)
You still see Walker coming out on top. By a pretty good margin. Walkers WRc+ in 1999, which I remember as being his best year because of the insane .379 BA, he had a WRc+ of 168. Of course, I forgot about 1997 when he hit 49 Hr, 33 SB and, oh yeah, won the MVP. His WRc+ was an insane 181. Holliday Posted a very good 150 WRc+ in 2007. But this is significantly lower than 168 and lower then 181 by a long shot. Add to that the fact he fielded a little better at a more valuable outfield position, and I say you have to choose him over Holliday
Totally hear you about “He will bleed for you” though, and you could make a good case Holliday is more consistent than walker was.

But if you add in the defensive factor
I take Walker over Holliday. It’s close and both would improve this team greatly.

I was pretty disgusted after the Rockies season, but the rapid demise of a couple of AL East teams have helped with that.
