wigginton isn't a bad player

If he is on the bench and being paid $2mil. He should easily be a positive in that role. He just wasn’t here at double the salary as a de facto starter.

@BusterESPN: You’d have to think the acquistion of Ty Wigginton will end the Cuddyer/Phillies thing. He can help fill in at first, third, etc.

Not that I’m the biggest proponent of Cuddyer, but if the Rockies trade of Wigginton to the Phillies was a move to cool the Phils on Cuddyer so that the Rockies can sign him, I’m going to laugh really, really hard.

But, as it stood, Wiggington was our best 3rd basemen. Not that he is/was/will be great, but at least could have been passable at the hot corner. The other options there are even less appealing.

And that the Phillies took the albatross, and actually paid money for him, is just the icing on the cake.

You're right.

But he should fit in there pretty well as that RH bat off the bench.

I do wonder about how he’ll perform in Philly though. Lots more pressure there. And if you look at those RISP numbers (a.k.a. higher pressure situations) he sucks.

We’ll see. But I think he’ll be fine, if not pretty damn good.

It's funny.

I had a late night discussion a month ago with RIRF in which I defended Wigginton. It turned into an argument over defensive metrics, but he convinced me that Wigginton really is only good at one thing: hitting with the bases empty. And he’s not all that good at that.

The only reason I like this deal is this ...

Wiggy’s not a half bad player. Just had an awful, unlucky, miserable year last year, like nearly all of us.

And Pacheco’s much better than Klaw thinks. Pending an acquisition (Wilson Betemit, anyone? Or maybe Youk?) he’s our starting 3B coming out of camp. And you know what, I’m happy about that. The guy is going to open a LOT of eyes this year.

by DumbAndNerdy on Nov 20, 2011 6:40 PM MST reply actions

Why does this show it?

The kind of ridiculous deal Cuddyer’s going to get is one of those “OMG, we need to make a splash, we’re a bad team who needs to overpay, who’s the biggest name who will come play for us?” contracts. See Werth, Jayson. He’s going to get big big bucks.

by BostonTransplant on Nov 20, 2011 7:56 PM MST up reply actions

Cuddyer's numbers have very little in common with Werth.

There is absolutely no reason to assume that he is going to get “big bucks,” whatever that is. Werth was coming off of a season in which he was voted 8th in MVP voting. Cuddyer has never been anything but a reliable role-player.

I also don't want to hurt his career path

When he gets the spot, I want him to never let it go. And if super 2 still exists, it’d be worth it to keep the best player a year longer than two months longer. He is a good contact hitter, but big league pitchers are better at letting hitters get themselves out. He isn’t perfectly polished yet. We will see what spring training does, but I’d rather not be premature with him, as this roster isn’t built to contend in 2012 anyway. Additionally, we may get a better read on Wood, Stewart and/or Nelson earlier in the season.

You all are putting WAY too much faith in a 20 year old kid

There’s a very real chance he will show up in Tulsa to start the season next year and be very average. These things happen. Brandon Belt, people. BB may turn out to be a good ML player, but he was even more hyped than Arenado in MiLB. We shouldn’t put more weight on one good — OK, fantastic — season than we would on one really bad one (like, say, Pacheco’s in AAA, or Friedrich).

Hey just for fun ... Anyone care to see Brandon Wood's MiLB lines?

AA (2006, aged 21): 276/355/552/907
AAA (2008, aged 23): 296/375/595/970

His A numbers (aged 20, just like Arenado) were even better, well over 1.000 OPS, but they’re hard to figure out because he bounced between levels and didn’t stay long there.

I’m just sayin’. Keep your panties on.

by BostonTransplant on Nov 20, 2011 8:12 PM MST up reply actions

The reason people are excited about Arenado isn't just numbers

Wood, like Stewart, mashed subpar fastballs in the minors but can’t fight in an at bat or handle breaking pitches. Arenado has a very good contact tool and has struck out less than 10% of his ABs. That’s 2-2.5 times less than Wood/Stewart. It’s not just the success, its HOW the success is reached. His approach is one that translates to higher levels pretty well.

they have totally different k rates which makes me (us?) all the more optimistic for Arenado – but you’re right, we really don’t know for sure….

belt is a poor example

Other than a couple weeks to start the season, He never played consistently. He raked in AAA though. They pulled the plug on him too early, mostly because Huff was so awful in the outfield. But yes, you’re absolutely right that there is no guarantee he will succeed right away at the MLB level, let alone AA. The AFL is the only level in which he didn’t struggle initially.

Glad to have some extra cash and a roster spot to spend on someone else...

…but I’m a little nervous, too. Wigginton was overpaid but wasn’t a horrible player other than the RISP part. Of course that’s a pretty important thing to suck at, but clutch or not, I don’t like the idea of paying for half of what could end up being a useful player for the already-spoiled Phillies. We’ll see, I guess.

Just a small town kid who thinks Coors Field on a sunny summer Saturday night is the best place to be on this or any other plane of existence. When a late-inning Todd Helton go-ahead homerun is added to this scenario, my brain melts.

Wiggy was an albatross

Rather than being THAT terrible (I don’t quite buy the dreadfulness with RISP). His moving on is a huge psychological lift for the fans, that’s all. In a vacuum I would have been alright with him in a 25th-man role next season.

by biondino on Nov 21, 2011 3:36 AM MST up reply actions

"I don't quite by the dreadfulness with RISP".......wut? He was absolute garbage w/ RISP last year:

20 for 123 w/RISP and OPS .496

1 for 16 with the bases loaded.

He was just about as bad as you would find in MLB.

"Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate"

/it is a new beginning, right?

by The Lodo Magic Man on Nov 21, 2011 7:22 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

Exactly

Even if he is the chokiest choker who ever choked you wouldn’t expect his RISP OPS to be that low. It’s near certain that at least some of that underperformance was just down to variance, and I’m not comfortable judging him harshly negatively on the strength of 100 ABs.

by biondino on Nov 21, 2011 9:59 AM MST up reply actions

I don't know

Wigginton has a MAJOR problem with RISP and it’s not just this year (although it was by far the worst)

Last five seasons…

Wigginton’s OPS with the bases empty_______Wigginton’s OPS with RISP
2007: .903_________________________________ .688
2008: .959_________________________________.698
2009: .745_________________________________.692
2010: .792_________________________________.606
2011: .852_________________________________.495
Total: .846_________________________________.644

That’s 1347 PA’s with the bases empty and and 449 with RISP and a 200 point OPS plunge. While the gap probably won’t be as large as it was in 2011, I would still expect Wigginton’s RISP numbers to be atrocious.

Although baseball is full of teams suffering setbacks, it’s also full teams overcoming them. All I ask is for the Rockies to be defined by the latter category.

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Nov 21, 2011 10:05 AM MST up reply actions
