PrintPurple Row Major League Baseball is an OOTP league for members of the Purple Row Rockies fan community. PRMLB consists of a 30-team league based on actual MLB teams and rosters as of Opening Day 2011. The league is currently full, but you can follow the action at http://ootp.petrocw.com.
FanPosts are used as a place for owners to communicate between simulations in order to make transactions and have other discussions. Even if you're not an owner, please feel free to talk about the game in this thread as well. The Preseason Thread will include all discussions leading up to March 30, 2011-the game start date of the first simulation. Most simulations cover seven days. Our first simulation will be held on Sunday, November 27.
Inside this thread, please post all of your trades and any other pertinent OOTP information. This is the place to ask questions, advertise players to trade, gab about the season, etc etc etc.
Actual trade negotiations should be taken to email/IM/private communication, but the results should be posted in this thread should a deal be worked out.

Is there a way to have a second owner help me out?
I have a friend who wants to help run my team with me, but he is in a different state. Can I set it up so that he can download the files but never update and send back up to the OOTP servers?

Yes.
The file will always be at the provided link.
He can also just use the reports on the website. I made them as full as possible which is unusual for an online league because they eat up disk space, but I figure that we might have non-playing Rowbots interested in following the game.

I really appreciated that
dont have my computer to download the files on vacation but have been able to make decisions on lineups promotions etc. Using those reports. So thanks for that.
Random thought
Would PRMLB GM’s be interested in putting the team you manage in your sig? At least until we get used to who the players are. That way we don’t have to cross-reference a separate list if we’re talking trades, etc.

Yes, that's correct. The trade will go through after the first week of the season has been simulated.
Otherwise Petro would have to re-upload the entire league file and we’d all have to re-download it and re-do our turns.

Yes.
I’ve been hesitant to make a ruling on this. I will talk to the EC and have a ruling by Wednesday.
My preference would be for people to use it rather than mass emails or generic posts to the threads.
The ruling would be to determine whether or not we should ban mass emails and generic posts like “Rickie Weeks is available for trade.”

I think people should do their due diligence and know exactly who to email when proposing a trade. Emailing everyone to say ‘O Haiiii Edgar Renteria is on the trading block!’ is bullshit but looking at your needs and the needs of other clubs and emailing a few people is perfectly fine IMO.
That being said, I do like the large email threads because I think they can foster a sense of community or make the game a bit more endearing.

My download still shows April 1..
and it doesn’t have Vernon Wells or my other new player. I tried clicking Check for Updated Files again, but it says there’s no updated league files on the server. Any suggestions?

it still shows April 1 as the start date and I haven’t played any games yet. I’m not sure what to do at this point.

The game should be at 4/6. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
I would suggest manually installing the league file as you did the first time you downloaded on Sunday. That might work.

I would consider moving to the lowest setting, but I am afraid to remove the punishment factor for not giving your player’s rest days, etc. I also don’t want super-old players staying healthy. I usually play on the current setting, and it seems fair. We should keep monitoring this though. At the moment, I feel that the results are acceptable.

Yea, the very low injury setting is also pretty unrealistic. Ideally, OOTP would feature an injury frequency control and then an additional one for career ending ones, but alas…

Getting to 24% and then it freezes
any ideas on what is going on? I just go in load, then it asks for my team and password, put those in and then check for new files, starts to download and then freezes.

I had it freeze at 24%, but then after around five minutes it finished loading.
I don’t know how long you’ve let it sit, but it seems to stay at 24% for a while, so maybe give it another shot and do something else while letting it sit?

It takes a bit of time to load. I had the same issue as Shoemaker, it appeared to stop at 24% and became nonresponsive. I just let it sit for a few minutes and it finished loading.
Just let it do it’s thing and don’t worry if it appears to freeze on you.

any of my outfielders (Cubs) are available and actively looking to move one. Ideally it would be Soriano. The price increases just a little for Fukudome, and then is a little more for both Colvin and Byrd.

EmersonCR and RMN were scraping some barrels. I have two contract negotiations going, but they’re for major league guys. I expect to lose one.
I’m still hanging on to my stand pat strategy, though I’m itching because I know where my big weakness is and it has already shown itself in the first four games.
Barmes and Keppinger will be coming off th DL soon enough though. I most likely won;t need one of them.

Hey random question
since scouting and personnel are disabled, is the scouting information and strengths/weaknesses uniform for all teams? Or is it what it would be in any other simulation except that it’s just locked? And also, since it’s disabled, we’re just relying on the OOTP scouting metrics which are only updated annually?
Also, is there a reason why we disabled the scouting/personnel option?

Everyone sees the same numbers. These numbers are updated annually.
The scouting/personnel are disabled because it isn’t exactly a fair competition if the Rays manager gets to benefit from great scouting and Joe Maddon while the Rockies manager is stuck with Jim Tracy.
The competition is that you are the manager and scout in all things except in-game decisions. Even those decisions are based on your strategy settings though. So, you really control almost every aspect of the team. That’s the challenge.

given that we’d have the controls over resource allocation for stuff like scouting, it’d be up to the individual to make things more balanced but whatever, no biggie. Also do the manager ratings matter much if we have total control over lineup and strategy decisions?
At any rate, I only ask because I was looking through minor league systems and it seems like other than guys on the verge of joining the bigs, all prospects have like 1 or 2 star potential ratings so I feel like we’re kind of in the dark…

This is a separate issue.
The overall ratings suck. They are often inaccurate and misleading. Much of this has to do with the fact that the game is assigning a rating based on a large group of numbers that should not have equal weight across hundreds of other players at the same position. When you are using a 1-5 tanking to define all players, it gets very sloppy. As it should.
You really need to use the actual 1-100 ratings to get a real idea of the promise of a player. This is part of the reason that the stars were originally deactivated. However, we are leaving them on because if you want, you can just ignore them. The stars at least provide a good overview. In essence, it is the cover for the book. You can get a good idea of what is in the book by the cover, but, to really get to understand it, you need to read the details.

It’s fairly straightforward to go through your teams and press the “ask bench coach for lineups and depth charts” button on each one.

Question about lineups and pitching staffs
So I thought I had set my lineups and pitching staff for the week but I’m showing Theriot still batting leadoff when viewing the box scores. Is there something i need to do to save the lineups and pitching staffs before exporting?

When you're in the "Team Control Settings"..
is your name listed for “Setting Lineups/Depth/Pitching Staff”? If you let the computer do that, he will undermine your changes.

MINOR LEAGUE ROSTERS and CONTRACT NEG
Guys, I have a few questions about the minor league rosters and contract negotiations. I currently only have 21 players on my AAA, 23 on AA, 26 on high A, 27 on low A rosters. So with that said minor leagues haven’t started yet correct? Also I have reached out to several players on the FA market and most of them tell me they have to think about signing a minor league contract with me but when I go to the tab for contracts offered nothing appears.
Last question I have started the contract extension process with a player on my roster and after we did a league update I went back to that player and it was like we never talked about a contract extension so I re-offered what I thought was my original offer and it pissed him off cause he says it’s less than my original offer which I couldn’t find a record of in contract offers section. Anyone have any advice or had similar issues?
regarding the FA market
I had a couple of those messages as well, but those players ended up signing with another team anyway. You may want to check the league transactions report to see if that happened with your targets.
And the minors haven’t started yet. You should have a decent number of players that are currently unassigned at the bottom of your list?
I can’t help you with the contract extension issue. I’ve stumbled into that as well, and I don’t think the game keeps a record of your previous offers

Check under pending offers you may see something there. Players don’t always respond right away when you offer a new contract, both for extensions and new contract offers.
Did you get your export in?
If you didn’t, then that would explain why things were reset.

Hopefully the game does erase my recent incident with Mark Buehrle I can’t be pissing him off before the season gets rolling!

For the curious, out last sim of the year (12/18)
should leave us at 5/18 in the game. We’ll also vote before 12/20 on whether we would like to sim twice per week or thrice per week when we start again in January. At the current pace, we should finish with the World Series right around Opening Day 2012. A faster pace would have us finish in early March.

The trading block is tied to the morale system.
We either need to use only the trading block or only the thread, lest some players incur punishments while others avoid them. The decision was that the threads were a better place for actual communications since it can be more specific, interesting, and fun.

The Padres are interested in moving Heath Bell, Brad Hawpe, or Ryan Ludwick, and we’re looking for close-to-ML-ready prospects in return. Our biggest positional needs are at Catcher, in the rotation, and in the outfield.
I’m not in a hurry to deal these guys, but I’ll definitely listen to offers and start discussions. I’ve had a few tires kicked over Bell and Ludwick so far. To the rest of you… We’re talking the best closer in the league and a very good outfielder. Let’s get those bidding wars going! Hawpe isn’t bad either!
Worth noting that, like the D-Backs, we’re willing to listen on almost anyone in the organization. Our exceptions are Headley, Latos, and Rizzo.

the game doesn't always play depth guys just because they're backups
It typically plays your starters and only puts in the backups in event of injury or overwhelming fatigue.
Having not looked at your team, it could still be screwy, but there could be a logical reasoning as well.
Once you get your game working properly, you can manually fiddle with how often the backups play.

In my previous game I had my catcher in the outfield and my first baseman as emergency shortstop
I think he cost me SIX runs. I also had the game bring back my unfit just-back-from-8-months injured vet pitcher for 0.1 innings, hooking him after 6 runs had been scored, despite him not being in my pitching lineup.

Do the ratings for prospects change in the off-season to somewhat mirror reality? Say Nicasio takes a huge jump like he did in 2011?

unless OOTP changes its engine to accommodate it. I remember trying something like that and OOTP yelled at me because my # of teams in the playoffs wasn’t a multiple of 8.

Stanford’s funding offer was a wee bit more generous… And also not a part of the less-funded-every-year UC system. And, more than that, Stanford is a better fit for my research interests, I think.

Seriously, though, the rule exists to avoid major reshuffling of players and teams. We might also strike down just a single trade if it involved 6 major MLB players between two teams.
This trade is pretty close to meaningless. Just two GMs being anal about their minor league depth.

Having looked at this,
both the Reads and the Yankees have some problems with the way that they set up their depth charts and pitching staffs. You need to be careful having one backup for three or four positions with that backup set to start “when starter tired.” If all three players gets tired around the same time, that means that the backup is only going to allow one of them to rest.
You also need to be careful when you set no backup against a LHP or RHP. If, by some fluke, one player gets tired right when you are about to play against three LHPs in a row, and he has no backup, that’s going to cause a problem.
There are multiple levels on the depth charts for a reason. Use them.
I’m not saying that the injuries were caused by the issues I listed above, but it is at least a possibility.

Advice please
I have 5 SPs in my team. None of my MRs is capable of being a mop-up reliever or spot starter. What happens if I have an injury or a shitty starter during this time? Do other people play with 6 SPs or is there a better way?

I like the concept
but we would then be largely unable to deal with injuries, in the rotation especially (as there are no depth charts). And we might go that whole time a man or two down on the roster. I vote increasing the number of sims per week instead of length of the sim (although i wouldn’t mind 1 or 2 extra days a sim so it’s not always the same day of the week in the game)

In the lower-right corner, there’s a button which I believe will let you add this to your own Google calendar account.
It also gives me XML and ICAL options, I can post those later if anyone would like.
Right now the calendar only goes out through our last sim of 2011 (Dec 18th). If/when we decide on moving to 3 sims per week and we land on a January re-start day, I’ll add that information.
What other info should I add here/would people like to see? Sim that contains the trade deadline? When we will open up to more than 3 trades? I’m open for any suggestions.

**TRADING BLOCK**PITCHING SALE** #tradingblock
I am reorganizing my organization to fit my theories on baseball. This means that I am finding a few guys who might benefit from a change of scenery. In return for any of these, I would take any lower level prospects that fit my theoretical system that focuses on Contact hitters and Control pitchers. In essence, I want your version of these same type of players who might not fit into your system, but could do well elsewhere. I can package them in most ways, but Villar and Greenwalt are strong prospects, so I might to avoid too much value loss. Two of these guys are on my Baseball America Top 20 prospects list. One is in the top 10.
I’ll be doing a similar exercise this weekend with my position prospects.
Henry Villar: My #10 prospect, Villar is 2-0 with a 1.18 WHIP and 11K in 12.2 IP at AA Corpus Christi. He projects to be a solid MLB reliever. In fact, he posted a 1.33 WHIP in 6 IP at the end of the 2010 season. Link
Kyle Greenwalt: My #18 prospect, Greenwalt is projecting to be a starter. At 22, he’s still a couple years away from the MLB level, but he’s ready to move on to the next level. In his first start in Corpus Christi this year he struck out nine in seven innings while surrendering only two walks and five hits. I don’t really have room for him in AAA. If you do, you might get him to the MLB-level more quickly. Link
Juri Perez: If you’re looking for a steal, this might be it. His potential ratings are very high even though he is only 20 years old. Unfortunately, he got injured in the last sim and I’m trying to clear some room at that level. Link
Fernando Rodriguez: Fernando has great stuff and could make for good MLB-level relief work or as organizational depth at your AAA club. He is currently on my MLB roster in middle relief. For a reliever he has great stamina and serves as my spot starter. He also has some room for development that could push his stuff toward the closer range. Link
Samuel Gervacio: Samuel had a really strong 2009 debut at the MLB level. In 21IP he stuck out 25 batters and posted a 1.14 WHIP. For some reason, he only saw 3 IP in 2010, and now he’s unhappy at the AAA level. He could serve as middle relief or organizational depth in your system. Link
Sergio Escalona: Sergio performed had a decent showing in 2009 with Philadelphia. In 13 IP, he struck out 10 and put up a 1.24 WHIP. I’m also not sure on his story from then until now, but he also has high potential ratings and serves as good organizational depth. Link
Cesar Carillo: Cesar put up some MLB time in 2009. He is another reliever with high stamina who can serve in a mop up or spot starter role. He’s basically organizational depth at this point. Link.

This is the same story as above. These are guys who are worth picking up, but they just don’t fit what I’m trying to do with my organization. Some of them are also blocking spots for my top prospects. Rather than demote them to clear space, they might to better with a change of scenery and continue to develop for you.
Unlike the decent group of prospects that I rolled out for pitchers, my hitting group is primarily filled with organizational depth types. That being said, all of these guys are excellent fielders, and a few have a good enough bat to be MLB-level bench players who provide solid defense. And there is one real gem.
Brian Bogusevic: A lefty outfielder with good gap power and a strong glove. He could make a great fourth outfielder or could drop right in if you are dealing with an outfield injury. He’s a former first round pick who, in real life, ended up replacing Hunter Pence to the tune of a 122 OPS+. I’m not sure if the game will send him there, but he’s a solid MLB guy. I just don’t intend to trade Pence and Bourn and I have DeShields coming up behind him. He’s a base-stealer too. Link
Wladimir Sutil: Good utility infielder who doesn’t strike out. Great 2B and solid SS/3B glove. I’d keep him, but I have a slew of guys like this from the top (Keppinger and Barmes) on down. Link
Tommy Manzella: Great glove SS. Played in 83 games for Houston in 22. Weak bat, but great organizational depth. Link
Anderson Hernandez: Veteran utility infielder, yet still pretty young. Switch hitter with a decent bat. Link
Jimmy Paredes: The one real prospect of the bunch, Paredes projects at least as an MLB-level utility infielder. In your system, he could go farther. Unfortunately, as you can see, I’m loaded with guys like this along with higher-ranked prospects at lower levels. He could turn into a pretty good asset. Link

I’m thinking it’s something to do with the heat sink/fan element… anytime my computer tries to do anything strenuous (streaming video, downloading/uploading OOTP files), it gets really hot and can’t think.
Naturally it’s out of warranty, but I’m just hoping that for a 6-pack one of my co-workers will pop the cover off and fix/recommend a fix for me. I’m working on transferring the PRMLB game over to my netbook, hopefully I’ll be able to upload from there. :-(

One of the most frustrating things about OOTP, in my opinion:
Weaver pitches 8 innings of 8 hit, 2 ER work, has just induced a double play to bring his IP up to 8.2 for the day… and he gets pulled, and Kyle Kendrick finishes off Mitch Moreland (link). Angels were up by 5 runs and the 8-spot guy was coming to the plate – in the real world, unless Weaver was totally gassed, he would’ve gotten the opportunity to go for the CG. OOTP just saw he was over 110 pitches and pulled him, and Kendrick only needed to throw 4 pitches.
I’ve had this happen on some of my other saves and it’s frustrating as hell. Weaver deserved that CG.

the draft pool is published in our next sim. I know it’s a ways off, but how is the draft handled in a league like this? Is it like a fantasy draft where we all show up in a thread and draft, and then Petro just loads it into OOTP later?

Schumacher normally is my leadoff hitter but he’s injured so they moved Molina up. It’s okay with me since Descalso is Schumacher’s backup and even worse than Schumacher but I would like to understand better why Molina would move to the top instead of Descalso.

The game really does hate me.
Bronson Arroyo goes down with an undisclosed injury (and in the middle of a 3 hitter), giving me 3 starting pitchers and 2 position players to hit the DL in the first two sims.

It was all about how various fantasy baseball players (not ESPN fantasy, but fantasy like what we do here) construct narratives around their teams. AL West is going to be fun down the stretch

Wow, that extra innings game against the Diamondbacks was pretty good!
Huston Street blew a save in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Then two homeruns in the 12th won it for the Phils. The crazy part was Arizona’s J.J. Putz was the 3rd out in the bottom of the 9th with the winning run on 2nd. I wonder why Arizona didn’t PH anyone?
