Fanforum with Dick Monfort and DOD

All,

Dick Monfort and Dan O'Dowd are holding a second call for season ticket holders to talk Rox. Depending on the pace, I'll try to post the major details of the call. I"m not a great scribe but hopefully you approve of my work.

Since this fanpost requires 75 characters, I should let you know I wasn't able to make the first call so I'm not of the setup for this call. I'm hoping for a Q and A but we'll see.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

supposed to get a call here shortly

so not on the call yet. I’m sure they won’t skip out on potential FA targets.

I call BS on the "due diligence" on Beltran's knee

He had microfracture surgery, which means he has missing cartilidge in his knee that’s been replaced by scar tissue. I honestly don’t know what kind of homework you can do on his knee. You either take a leap of faith that the knee has 2 or 3 good years left, or you don’t. There really aren’t any tests or drills that are going to answer that question for you.

by Northsider1964 on Dec 14, 2011 6:44 PM MST up reply actions

risk has a $$$ figure attached to it.

Any FA signing is a bit of a bet that player will produce a certain amount. I think every team sees Beltran as a bit risky in this regard or he’d have more suitors and possibly signed already. I don’t think it’s total BS, just to the extent that it’s used as an excuse for the Rockies to downplay the money issue it is.

by Rox Girl on Dec 14, 2011 6:51 PM MST up reply actions

It's absolutely risky

I don’t disagree with that at all. But you either take the leap or you don’t. After I had microfracture surgery, I was in the best shape of my life. My knee was stable and very strong. There was no outward sign that I had ever been hurt. But your knee ages in dog years at that point. It’s just a crap shoot whether it lasts long enough for a team to get its money’s worth.

by Northsider1964 on Dec 14, 2011 6:58 PM MST up reply actions

Microfracture surgery saved Kenyon Martin's career

I’m not too worried about this type of surgery. As I understand it, the procedure eventually results in the cartilage basically regrowing itself (simplified I know). I would prefer to know someone has had this surgery vs ongoing tendon issues etc.

microfracture ...

I had it done on my ankle. Basically, it is still arthroscopic surgery. They clean up the busted up cartilage and then drill tiny holes in the bones where the cartilage should be. This causes the bone to bleed, which in theory regenerates the growth of cartilage in the area. As it in arthroscopic, it is not a particularly invasive surgery, but there is no guarantee how well the cartilage regenerated and the only way to know for sure is to re-scope the area which is usually not done as it sets the timetable back further.

My ankle is much improved since the surgery – the greatest obstacle (acknowledging I am not a professional athlete but a weekend warrior) at least as far as the ankle was concened is the recovery of full movement and the breaking up of scar tissue. That Beltran played 140+ games last year after fully recovering from the surgery to me speaks volumes.

Collective bargaining agreement question

DOD makes a statement that slot will allow the best player to go to the highest pick. States incorrectly that this will “level the playing field” in the draft with high and low revenue teams. Says the same thing about international signings and says the cap there will allow to sign players that normally will take $3M or so.

Since the question was about Prado, it's pretty obvious.

The fact that he doesn’t say his name is interesting. Basically it signals Jurrjens is dead to the Rockies, but that they’re still holding out hope for Prado. I think this might be a bit of a fantasy.

DOD: Hoping Smith hits 20 homers. Trying to build a clubhouse. Trying to build a culture and want more men that want to compete. Need to more from JV to Varsity. Show up every night. Those that don’t won’t be Rockies. You can tell this struck a chord with DOD. His voice has angered…very noticable.

Coaching staff question

Why did the coaching staff stay in tact? Bad baserunning, didn’t get runners over. Caller says Gibson’s signing in Arizona made a huge impact by changing coaches.

DOD: Easy to blame coaches. Sounds like we have to have more leadership that holds players accountable. If we have more leadership from the coaches and players, this will make a difference.

Pitching question....who's the 1 and 2 on the staff

DOD: Bunch of 2, 3’s or 4’s on the staff. HOping to have someone become a 1. But we have no 5’s in our staff. Injuries were a big issue last year with our pitching. Sounds like he’s comfortable with our staff.

Leaving too many players on base last year

What’s the strategy this year to improve this?

DOD: Trying to add guys that can hit with running in scoring position. Maturity is one of the reasons we don’t do this well. We also have a fear of failure. Not a coaching issue but a player issue.

I never got around to writing my post about ownership

But I do not fault the Monforts about how they’ve handled the ownership of the Rox. They signed Tulo and Cargo to large extensions (Tulo moreso) that it’s unfair to call them cheap. We have great attendance but some of that has to do with how affordable tickets are. They’re finally raising prices for the first time in 4 years and not a large increase at that. Our payroll is in the top half of the league and bunched in with the Braves, Brewers, and I believe Twins so our execution has just been a bit off over the past two years.

A couple other minor league notes that haven't been mentioned here, derived from Tweets of the discussion:

Josh Rutledge,
Nolan Arenado,
Kent Matthes
Chad Bettis,
and
Timmy Wheeler should all be MLB ready soon.

Bettis and Chatwood seem to be seen by the org more as bullpen guys right now. That could significantly impact their future fantasy value for those of you that have them in keeper leagues.

That Matthes’ name keeps on getting brought up is a bit of a surprise to me, as there are a few more of that type of hitter in the org. ahead of him. Keep an eye on him for the outfield mix this year, particularly if things head south with Colvin and Wheeler.

by Rox Girl on Dec 14, 2011 8:20 PM MST reply actions

Except for Rosario there isn’t another one, and especially not an OF bat.

For sure, and particularly as you pointed out the last time they did this

the calls very much highlight something we overlook (or, fairly, have no access to) and that is the importance of clubhouse/off-field issues. It seems to me that the org is really trying to address a perceived problem with professionalism and dedication among some of these guys. Not sure how we can be expected to consider much of this stuff in our daily bickering/analysis, and I’m sure it must drive the SABR cats bananas…but its clear that this is a big issue behind the curtain.
