Rockies to trade PTBNL for Kevin Slowey

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - SEPTEMBER 26: Kevin Slowey #59 of the Minnesota Twins reacts to giving up a solo home run to Mike Moustakas #8 of the Kansas City Royals during the sixth inning on September 26, 2011 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images)

The Colorado Rockies have agreed with the Minnesota Twins to trade for right hand pitcher Kevin Slowey, according to Thomas Harding. Slowey, 27, had his best season with Minnesota in 2008 when he went 12-11 and had a 3.99 ERA with a 3.96 xFIP, last season his ERA balooned to 6.67, but his peripheral statistics were solid enough to suggest that he was more of a 4.36 range pitcher according to x-FIP. It seems the Rockies are taking a buy low opportunity.

UPDATE:

Troy Renck confirms and reports that:

Rockies will acquire Slowey for player to be named so won't be completed until after Thursday's Rule V draft

Good Deal...

Low-Risk one as well. He’ll only be 28 in May. Make Montgomery County proud, Kev!

Having to wait until after the Rule 5 draft for the PTBNL implies that it's likely a player that's currently exposed to said draft

that the two sides have agreed on. That does limit it to more moderate/fringe prospects that we’d talking about.

That's all Slowey is worth these days...

He has been a quality control pitcher, but injuries and gopher balls have limited his effectiveness and innings since 2008. At this point, I look at him as a “rich man’s Aaron Cook”, though he can K more batters.

by GoRoxGo on Dec 6, 2011 9:24 AM MST up reply actions

yep

Watching him the last few years he has that exasperating ability to go a handful of innings looking fairly on it and then blowing up in an inning quicker than you can say “insert expletive here.”

I guess it depends on whether he is better than who the rox currently have stuck out in the middle of the road.

It doesn’t seem much different from the rest of them. It actually has top-notch talent performing the song (Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams). I’m not sure how it’s much worse than Growing Pains or Who’s the Boss?.

Family Ties was the #2 show for two years. It doesn’t get nearly as much play as other top sitcoms of that time. I suppose this is mostly due to the fact that the humor of the show really doesn’t work outside of the context of the 60s parents/80s kids setting.

Problem is what he’ll be bouncing back to is a mediocre pitcher. Not a bad deal but probably nothing to get too excited about.

I really wanted Slowey three years ago...

and his name has been mentioned more than once by Renck over the years. So, finally DOD nabs him when probably all interest in him has dried up. Truly a “buy-low” move, and if a fringe minor leaguer is all we give up, no harm is done. Just not expecting a return to 2008 form for him, unfortunately.

Okay, I checked, it's only a little over 4, and he'd probably be up for September anyway, which is when he'd cross 5 years of service

I like this move now, he could be in the rotation until DLR comes back, then be optioned down to the minors for depth. It’s like signing Millwood but being able to hold onto him for the entire season.

The only thing I don’t like is that he’ll cost over 2 million dollars. Eek.

Love this pickup

No downside, league-average upside? More moves like this, please. You can never have enough cheap rotation depth, especially when your #2 and 3 starters are coming off serious injuries. And Slowey’s a decent pitcher… he’s just been slaughtered on BABIP in recent years. Some of that is real, I’m sure, but not all of it.

Here are my ERC projections for our starters (4.00 is league average for all pitchers, 4.10 is league average for SPs):
Chacin 3.63
De La Rosa 3.88
Nicasio 4.05
Pomeranz 4.06
Hammel 4.10
Slowey 4.38
Cabrera 4.45
Bettis 4.56
White 4.75
REPLACEMENT LEVEL 4.85
Rogers 4.98

That’s a pretty solid collection of arms. I’d still like to pick up another starter as insurance for Nicasio, but I feel a lot better about our chances of getting through the year without an Esmil Rogers start than I did a few hours ago…

Have you weighed in yet on the possible

Street for Volquez trade? I’m not sold on Edinson at all.

by GoRoxGo on Dec 6, 2011 9:40 AM MST up reply actions

I have Volquez projected at 4.72

So yeah, hard to get too excited about that…. sure, he still probably has more upside than Hammel or Slowey, but that projection is ugly enough that entrusting a rotation spot to him is a huge risk. He might thrive in the bullpen, though… actually, that’s not such a bad idea. Although I’d still think Street ought to have more value than that, what with all the obscene deals relievers are getting this winter.

by Heltonfan on Dec 6, 2011 9:49 AM MST up reply actions

By comparison, what do you have...

for Cook and Francis for 2012? Both could somehow end up back with the team.

by GoRoxGo on Dec 6, 2011 9:53 AM MST up reply actions

Francis 4.23, Cook 4.56

So I’d say there’s no point in bringing Cook back… but Francis is interesting. It’s worth noting that basically the only thing separating Francis from Mark Buehrle is BABIP…

You may wish to chime in since I’m citing your projection re/ Volquez, vis-a-vis Francis.

by GoRoxGo on Dec 6, 2011 10:09 AM MST up reply actions

we could do it here.

I don’t know how much if it really matters, though, since my argument about Volquez isn’t going to be swayed by a projection for the year based on seasons he was injured and recovering from TJ surgery.

by Rox Girl on Dec 6, 2011 10:13 AM MST up reply actions

Some players come all the way back from TJ...

some don’t. The fact that Volquez has not improved much from 2010 post-surgery is indicative of someone who does not have the upside you think he has. Getting back to pre-surgery 2008 form is a long-shot. Why don’t you at least acknowledge that, regardless of HF’s projection?

by GoRoxGo on Dec 6, 2011 10:31 AM MST up reply actions

I should clarify...

as that was worded weird. His 2011 was a step back from 2010, his post-surgery year. That’s a horrible sign that he’s a fundamentally different pitcher now than in 2008…..without that upside.

by GoRoxGo on Dec 6, 2011 10:33 AM MST up reply actions

I disagree with this assessment,

but I will admit that it might have caused a severe enough disruption in the development of a pitcher that still hadn’t peaked when he underwent the knife that he might never realize the upside potential I’m saying that he has. Volquez is a significant risk, but with enough Slowey’s, he has the kind of upside I don’t mind taking risks on.

by Rox Girl on Dec 6, 2011 10:42 AM MST up reply actions

This is where you lose me...

“With enough Sloweys”… I don’t get it. Depth is insurance against injuries, but there’s no insurance against awfulness. If Volquez gets thrown into the rotation and meets his NEIFI projection for a couple months before being replaced, the damage is done.

Incidentally, I’m trying to think of pitchers who regained their form after having lost it for 3 years… drawing a blank so far. I’m sure they’re out there, though, any names come to mind?

by Heltonfan on Dec 6, 2011 10:56 AM MST up reply actions

Well, Roger Clemens appeared to have lost his mojo..

in Boston, before returning to CyYoung form in Toronto. But we all know the rest of the story now.

by GoRoxGo on Dec 6, 2011 11:05 AM MST up reply actions

If he shows up to camp and is his projected self, rather than his potential peak self, I expect Slowey to get into the rotation.

Of course, saying that and knowing how my favorite team actually picks its starters, I realize how ridiculous a hope this might be. At any rate, it’s not quite the same thing but one scenario I have in mind with Volquez would be to repeat a Dennis Eckersley type of path.

by Rox Girl on Dec 6, 2011 11:12 AM MST up reply actions

Eckersley

Yep… like I said earlier in the thread, if we acquired Volquez with the intention of making him a reliever, I wouldn’t complain… the upside is a lot lower in that case, sure, but so is the downside. At least we’d be removing any possibility of him torpedoing the season.

by Heltonfan on Dec 6, 2011 11:15 AM MST up reply actions

This is actually very possible

Ian Ferguson was pretty good in the Royals system until he had TJ and he never completed his development. Now he’s the pitching coach at Metro State.

How many homers would Slowey give up at Coors?

Looks like the type of fly ball pitcher that won’t even be a viable 5th starter at Coors (Career 47.9% FB). He gave up a lot of homers at Target field (10 HRs in only 59.1 innings in 2011). Hard to see him not giving up 2 HRs per start here.

The key will be traffic

If he gives up solo shots, you can live with that. His 1.4 BB per game will help.

If he gives up crooked number shots, he’s toast. His 10.2 hits/game worry me there.

It’s hard to get excited here, but , really, who knows?

by evers44 on Dec 6, 2011 12:12 PM MST up reply actions

Exactly

Not saying Slowey will do well here – he may or he may not. But the Rockies need guys who throw strikes and challenge hitters. And when they make a mistake that ends up in the seats, maximize the chance that it’s a solo shot.

Not a starter, obviously, but that’s what Betancourt does and he’s having a successful run in Colorado. At times he seems like a HR machine, but you look up at the end of the year and he’s among the top relievers in the league. We need some of that same philosophy from the starting staff, instead of looking for frightened nibblers who have high ground ball rates.

I suppose the Rule 5-vulnerable compensation piece could get yoinked by another team.

The Rockies continue to put the inspired into uninspiring trades!

Acquire as many 5th starters as you can!!

cool story.

A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Domingo told me was looking for Ozzie Guillen. Marlins have $$. Seems like natural fit. Marlins could turn to Domingo if don’t get Pujols

75 today and 74 tomorrow is how many days remain until Pitchers and Catchers report for Spring Training.

Somewhere in Minnesota...

There’s alleged speculation that the PTBNL is Seth Smith (via a couple commenters on MLBTR.) I’m praying for a link as that would have to be some HI-larious readin’. Like Red Sox fans’ trade proposal funny.

A lot is two words. Allot can be one word but it has another meaning.
The only time you really want to use "myself" is when you are the recipient of your own action. Usually you're better off using "me."
Your is not the correct contraction of you are. The word you're looking for is you're.
It's anyway, not anyways.

My uncle used to tell a riotous Bubba Smith-Nancy Reagan joke. So, an homage was in order.

Anyone else consider

that we may be stockpiling young, potential filled arms in the attempt to use them to land an established big-league pos. player?

Like, for example, the fact that all of the arms we’ve acquired are better than 4/5 of NYM’s starters?

I know it’s a pipe dream, but David Wright, anyone?

by Purple Row Troll on Dec 6, 2011 2:47 PM MST reply actions

Won't be Wright...

but you may be onto something. It’s a crazy time of year.

Well

if Rox Girl doesn’t even hope it to be true, you know it’s WAY too far-fetched

by Purple Row Troll on Dec 6, 2011 2:54 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, sorry for not feeding this one.

The Rockies pitching depth will probably have to be pared at some point if everybody starts working out as well as us Purple tinted optimists hope, but reality says that won’t happen. If and when it does, we’ll start talking trade scenarios, but that won’t come until late Spring.

by Rox Girl on Dec 6, 2011 3:00 PM MST up reply actions

Eh, it's ok

I could see them moving 1/2 of the Ubaldo haul (sorry, Joe Gardner) along with some of this depth for someone big- question is, who? I mean, it’s not going to be with the Braves. I really don’t know.

Anytime the Marlins are offering Albert Pujols $200 million is a crazy time.

I’m not discounting anything.

That it's the Marlins is a little crazy,

that it’s Pujols is not. The market is still working on supply and demand, and teams only have so much of the latter for 4th/5th starters. Not enough to trade anything good for them, no matter how many the Rockies collect.

Or are you suggesting we move Arenado to 1b? I don’t see a need for Wright.

Question on the rule V draft rule:

Could the Rockies immediately trade a player that they selected in the rule V draft?

Rule 5. No Roman numeral. I know Renck used it in his tweet, but that drives purists crazy.

Of which I’ve apparently become one.

The answer is yes, it happens frequently, but the Rockies don’t really do the Rule 5 anymore.

by Rox Girl on Dec 6, 2011 3:20 PM MST up reply actions

for the team that acquires the Rule 5 pick it does,

these trades are usually made solely for money to the trading team, by the way.

So

When the Rockies get the PTNL from Philly they’re sending him to Minnesota? Why don’t we let them work out the rest of the trade themselves. No need for a middle man at this point.
