It would appear that a salary dump is an acceptable means of moving Huston Street.

He's close to being traded for a PTBNL, with San Diego picking up the majority of the salary.

The Bucs Dugout guide lists three such Padres prospects, all infielders

1B/OF Matt Clark
UT Drew Cumberland
SS/IF Jonathan Galvez

Galvez is easily the best prospect of the three, but I’m suspecting that the Rockies made this trade for pitching, so I will continue looking.

by Rox Girl on Dec 7, 2011 9:56 AM MST up reply actions

But they may have made the trade for pitching

in the sense of using the $ not paid to Street to acquire a SP.

If so, then one of the other 3 non-pitcher prospects makes sense.

by maris61 on Dec 7, 2011 11:03 AM MST up reply actions

If that is the case, one more that might be intriguing is Vince Belnome.

23 y.o. 2B/3B, hit really well at AA in a small sample in San Antonio in 2011, but they might have had a juiced ball issue there as everybody on that team seemed to hit well this year.

by Rox Girl on Dec 7, 2011 12:17 PM MST up reply actions

scratch that, I was going off a Yahoo report that said he was left unprotected,

but looking at it (drafted in 2009,) he’s clearly not eligible for Rule 5 status yet.

is Cumberland the guy that retired due to inner ear imbalance or something, and re entlt unretired?

I do as well.

But if the Braves want Fowler and somebody else for Prado, I’d be all for Polanco.

And I'm thrilled

to hear that DOD isn’t giving up on our young core. It really wouldn’t be worth it to acquire a moderately above-average 2b. Perhaps he has some faith in our young 2b prospects to break through in the next couple seasons (Rutledge, Story).

Perhaps...

But I don’t necessarily agree with your evaluation. IMHO Street and Bell were comparable. How many times have you seen players in any sport that have been moved or traded, come back to haunt their old team with spectacular play just to prove a point. I fear this is what Street will do (many times because he is on a division rival team).

Guy was a good representative of the franchise and had some great moments. Getting criticized for not being Mariano Rivera may not be the best way to get sent off, but whatever. Hope he blows a few saves against us but is otherwise nails for the friars.

I know Huston is passionate about being a closer, and he will be able to fill that role for the Padres. It’s a good move for him personally, but I’m sorry to see him go.

Although baseball is full of teams suffering setbacks, it’s also full teams overcoming them. All I ask is for the Rockies to be defined by the latter category.

Someone needs to tell the Rockies front office that baseball isn’t the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Collecting dozens of mediocre pitchers isn’t going to create a zord that is some front line pitcher.

Saw this on MLBTR comments and I cannot stop laughing.

Can’t declare free agency until after next season, and now like 15th on the starting pitching depth chart.

This is both hillarious and absolutely true.

And thing is, we’re still probably not done acquiring medicore pitching options. Can’t wait till we resign both Millwood and Jeff Francis. We’re going to end up with more #4 starters than any team in the league. If we actually feilded a AAAA team, we’d totally rock next year.

This reeks

They got an extra $7.5 million to spend, which will probably go toward 3-4 more #5 starters. Wasn’t Street a hot trade commodity with at least 4 teams (O’s, Reds, Red Sox, Pads) interested? How is it that all we end up getting is basically a salary dump?

by hiflew on Dec 7, 2011 2:37 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

Because he was never as hot a commodity as the reporters made it sound.

Four teams interested, all but one wanted the Rockies to pay a chunk of the contract. It’s likely that none of the four offered better than what we’ll eventually get back from SD in player value, either.

I'm not going to start banging on the CHEAPFARTZ drum yet.

But I’m taking it out of the closet just in case. I thought the days of payroll reductions and promises of rebuilding were gone after last off-season’s impressive display of securing CarGo and Tulo to long-term deals. However, as things stand right now I can tell you I’ve seen this show before during 2001-2004/05: keep the turnstiles moving by having your two beloved superstars (Helton/Walker) and do everything in the organization’s power to field the lowest-cost team possible while telling us to just wait a little while longer…

Right now, the team has slashed or will slash $25+ million from their payroll. I notice that my ticket deposit will not be reduced by 30%….

Oh, now be honest, NL West rivals, warriors to warriors. You do prefer it this way, don't you, as it was meant to be? No peace in our time. "Once more unto the breach, dear friends."

yeah, well they doubled their payroll from 2006 to 2010

While raising ticket prices once in that span. I notice no one complained about that.

What's wrong with rebuilding? We've got a team that patently isn't competitive at a high level so rebuilding is exactly what we need to do.

You may prefer to watch the same old players win 77 games in 2012. I’d rather win 70, then challenge at the top in 2013/14/15.

The rumor I heard was

Jurrgens and Prado for Smith, Wheeler or Blackmon, Stewart, and one of the Matts (Lindstrom I think).

It’ll probably never happen, but I would love that

They were thinking Smith/Nolan/pitching prospect.(for Prado+JJ)

Obviously NOBODY wants to see Nolan gone, I just wonder if Smith+wheeler+bettis+b prospect would get this deal done with Atlanta?

Arenado makes perfect sense for the Braves as a Chipper replacement

but their fans don’t seem to get that the Rockies have an even more conspicuous hole at the position if we trade him. There’s no Salcedo in our system, it’s Arenado or bust. He’s probably well nigh untouchable unless it was for a true TOR starter in a similar near MLB situation. So Julio Teheran, I could potentially see us trading Arenado for, but no other Braves player or prospect fits the bill.

That next question is why I don’t know if we should bother discussing it, because so far there’s no indication that it would.
