Tuesday Rockpile: Have You Heard About Michael Young?

Off-topic

I am quite certain no matter what I wrote today, your eyes would replace the words with some derivative of "Michael Young."  Like how a musician playing in the key of A major instinctively plays a D major chord instead of the written D minor chord, you have all been conditioned by now to internalize nothing but Michael Young.  It's quite sick really.  You should get that checked out.  You might need word replacement therapy.

Good think pitchers and catchers report in six days.  Good thing the first workout is a week from today.  Position players arrive in thirteen days, with the first full team workout occurring two weeks from today.  I celebrated by booking my March trip to Scottsdale, optimizing the adventure by attending nine games and staying seven nights.  Win.

And now I have stalled long enough.  Here is the latest on the Michael Young situation:

Young has asked for trade, in doing so alienating his franchise:

"I think it's important to address the inaccurate portrayal that is being painted. The suggestion that I've simply had a change of heart and asked for a trade is a manipulation of the truth. I want to be traded because I've been misled and manipulated and I'm sick of it." - Young

As much as Jon Daniels and Nolan Ryan try to frantically enact damage control, keeping some semblance of leverage in trade negotiations, those comments are incredibly difficult to come back from.

Of the eight teams the Rangers can trade him to, the Rockies have been tied to Young the most and remain the most logical landing place should Texas eat salary.  The remaining potential teams include the Angels, Dodgers, Padres, Twins, Yankees, Astros, and Cardinals.  Young will entertain expanding that list on a case-by-case basis, and Troy Renck continues to forecast against a deal being struck due to the financial hurdles.

But with the Rangers' leverage slipping quickly, it appears that Texas will end up trading Young, and the Rockies remain the most likely destination.  That doesn't mean odds are even 50/50 that he ends up a Rockie, or if he does, that it would be soon.  But I agree with the MLBTR poll that Young as a Rockie is the most likely scenario.

Jimenez hopes to do more by not trying to do too much | Inside the Colorado Rockies
This is an absolute must read about Ubaldo and pitching coach Bob Apodaca's disappointments with Jimenez' season last year.  Yes, there seems to be much to improve.

"Now I think he has the advantage of that breakout season," Apodaca said. "But you look back and say, ‘If we could have just made that adjustment sooner, what kind of season could we have? And what could it have led our team to accomplish?' "

We are getting greedy.  I love it.

Baseball Prospectus | Reintroducing PECOTA: They're Here!  In case you missed it, check out the PECOTA projections.  PECOTA's algorithm is unique in that it gives odds of a "breakout year," "improvement," "collapse" or "attrition."   For the record, Ubaldo comes in at a 10% breakout odds and 44% improvement.  So those of you predicting regression are actually more pessimistic than the emotionless computers.

The biggest breakout candidates for Colorado are Huston Street (26%), Manny Delcarmen at 22% (ugh), Juan Nicasio (20%), Aaron Cook (18%), and Jorge de la Rosa (16%).  The top breakout candidate with a bat is Cole Garner (10%).

Another unique aspect of PECOTA is player comps generated by the algorithm.  Sometimes the computers are spooky, like when the top player comp for Stephen Strasburg a year ago was Mark Prior - or when Felix Pie was a top prospect for the Cubs with a top comp of Corey Patterson.  Sometimes the comps are funny.  This year, Jhonny Nunez is the top comp for both Christian Friedrich and Edgmer Escalona.  Hmm.  Definitely check it out if you have a Baseball Prospectus account.

Baseball Prospectus | Wezen-Ball: Ferris Bueller's Day Off at Wrigley Field  It took almost fifteen years, but we have deduced through baseball that Ferris Bueller's Day Off happened on June 5, 1985.  I'm curious what parade occurred that day, and why anyone needed to be in school then anyway.

I believe in the future, the reality of the present, the sweet memories of the past, living is more than breathing, spring will came if we wait, patiently, believing, hoping. But the winter is long and we must endure its cold. I believe in the future, the reality of what is to come, the sweet memories that are yet to occur, probably, eventually, someday.

And I believe in hope and anticipation: the idea that we’ll meet again, and counting down the days until we do.

I don't want this trade to happen

give it up and go into spring training without any distractions.

However, I would have to point this out. If the Rockies got Young.

Would that give them the only all white guys infield in the Big Leagues? It is not intended to be racist at all, but simply pointing out the fact that seems like white guys are a minority in sports these days.

The Rockies should have throwback jersey days.

There are no apostrophes in plurals.
A lot is two words. Allot can be one word but it has another meaning.
The only time you really want to use "myself" is when you are the recipient of your own action. Usually you're better off using "me."
Your is not the correct contraction of you are. The word you're looking for is you're.
It's anyway, not anyways.
But if you only remember one thing...
There are no apostrophes in plurals.

You know what's funny? That statement is completely false.

Rockies OPS with less than 2 outs, runner on 3rd: .965
League average: .852

Funny what perception gives us. In fact, the Rockies had their best OPS of the season in any base/out state with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Next? That less than 2 outs, runner on third.

Granted, it could have been epically awesome at home and terrible on the road. I can’t see that. But overall, they were fine in those leverage situatuons.

It is certainly possible

but for them to be “awful” on the road in those situations, wouldn’t hey have to have some ridiculous 1.300 OPS in those situations at home? At what point is it SSS fluke? A hypothetical 1.300 OPS at home and .600 OPS on the road in that split – is that really an overall problem of situational hitting? How much fine-tuning can the team do to improve “road hitting in situations with less than two outs and a runner on third.”

And past that, their situational road hitting split might not even be worse than their flat out road hitting split. In that case, it would just be better to focus on fixing road hitting issues in general, which I’d argue is probably the case anyway.

I can’t double split it into “road hitting in situations with less than two outs and a runner on third.” Maybe I could with a BR play-by-play tool but I’m not sure.

Not really disputing this

but is OPS really the best measure here? I think the point of Tracy’s comment is actual runs scored in context vs. opportunity. I’d like to see that stat v. league average.

by Teekalong on Feb 8, 2011 2:44 PM MST up reply actions

No it really is not, and I will admit that

Without an exhaustive search through play-by-play data, I couldn’t tell you about runs per opportunity. Perhaps a dinger up five runs in the ninth contributed to that OPS. While it’s not something that necessarily disproves Tracy, it at least illustrates that it was not the black hole of production we thought.

By the way, my comment was in no way an indictment of your ability to see the game

I certainly thought the Rockies struggled in those situations too. Maybe they actually did on the road. But overall, they were fine and even outpaced park effects.

Definitely the bat we need.

Righty that fits nicely in a lefty-heavy lineup. Experienced .300 hitter taht finds gaps and has pop. Substantial offensive upgrade at 2B, especially considering that Herrerra/Lopez/ EYJ are slotted there.

Considering that Tulo seems to lose a month each season to injury, and maybe Stewart doesn’t reach the next level. Young can slide over to SS and 3B.

Average fielder. Won a GG (right…whatever) in 08. Herrerra and EY can slip into late innings.

by Dave in Superior on Feb 8, 2011 10:53 AM MST reply actions

These were my sentiments

until I saw all the public whining & bitching Young’s done in the last few days, knowing full well that decreases the Rangers’ leverage in trade talks.

For someone who’s allegedly a “good clubhouse guy”, he sure does air his dirty laundry in public a lot.

The more I hear from him, the less I’m really wanting him to come to the Rockies.

You know, I've heard other people use this knock against him.

But I’m not sure it applies. How many other players have been asked to change positions three times, one of those during the offseason after he’d won a Gold Glove? The Rangers have conveyed the message that Young doesn’t really have a place on the team, so he wants a different team. Now, if you find issue with his cost or are worried about his actual offensive value or his defensive shortcomings, I might agree, but I’m not sure his desire for a trade is cause for concern.

Washington said Young’s leadership is crucial for the Rangers.

“He means everything inside the clubhouse,” Washington said. “He’s our leader. It’s a guy that shows up every day and plays through injuries. He leaves his heart out on the field every day. We’re playing to put the best club out there and as far as I’m concerned, he’s a part of that.”

I'll agree that it doesn't raise his value,

however I think it does alleviate the character concerns some people have been voicing if we do get him. I don’t think he would have been to upset being moved from 3rd back to 2nd probably would have like it. It was more upset being moved to DH and then them trading for another DH type at some point you start to wonder if the organization wants you around anymore.

by Chacinisthefuture on Feb 8, 2011 2:11 PM MST up reply actions

Also the fact he is just now demanding a trade is different then if he had started this whole mess.

Think how tired some of us are over this saga. Imagine now if it’s you in those headlines and not just your favorite baseball team. I think you’d doubly want this over, MY could just be putting the pressure on them to get it over with since they’ve decided to move on without him so he can prepare for the season knowing where he’s at.

Another Top 100 Prospect List

at Project Prospect. It is quite different from other lists.

  1. overall – Wilin Rosario
  2. - Tyler Matzek
  3. - Hector Gomez
  4. - Charlie Blackmon

Christian Friedrich and Nolan Arenado did not make the top 100

I don't really like that site

A couple months ago they had a top prospect list by position and Rosario wasn’t even listed under Catchers. Now they have him as the #10 prospect in baseball.

Now they don’t list Arenado or Friedrich?

And its by the same Author that wrote the overall rankings. I don’t understand how you leave off your #10 overall prospect from your positional rankings.

Takes away that site’s credibility in my eyes.

There were comments giving him credit in that, saying it was surely a mistaken omission. But his retort was “Well, I guess you’ve never seen Rosario play.”

no rhyme or reason to it

if you are going by pure ceiling and raw ability (one reason for Gomez being so high), you HAVE to have Arenado on there. If you are going for proximity to majors (Blackmon), you HAVE to have Friedrich on there.

Awful list.

but just so you know the Hot Stove guys believe that MY would be a great fit

by arpagamos on Feb 8, 2011 4:13 PM MST reply actions

no, but I think this is the problem. I think dod thinks texas is stuck and is trying to get a great deal

I also think that the Rockies aren’t overly interested in Young. They want him, but only at exactly the right price. The right price I think is the Rangers taking on at least 20M if not 25 and giving up no top pitching prospects except Rogers. If thats true it’s easy to see why Texas is looking everywhere else to make a deal.

I told you I would write a fantasy fan post. know I’m working on it sort of

by arpagamos on Feb 8, 2011 4:22 PM MST up reply actions

yes exactly

and I think the Rockies are not just the most likely option for Young I really think we are the only option. And Texas all but has to trade him. We’re in a great position of negotiations.

Yeah a fan post would be great! I’m ready to take my fantasy team to the next level. I know which players to look for I think I just need some ideas on drafting them in the right order.

by Mondogarage on Feb 8, 2011 4:52 PM MST up reply actions

you may never read this

but thats not exactly what I meant. Exactly the right price simply means only if the deal meets their terms. They are interested in Young, but they aren’t willing to budge or only willing to budge a little in negotiations. Now if your asking if this would be my tactic then the answer is no. I am not convinced that Lopez or whatever combination at 2b you can dream up really gives us a chance to be competitive against the Philies of the mlb world. I want Young more than the Rockies FO does and I would be willing to pay more, trade more than the Rockies seem to be willing to. I recognize I’m mostly wrong in this. I want Young because I believe he gives us the best chance to win a world series in 11. Yet I must admit luck will play a much bigger role in the Rockies winning a world series than getting players like Young. nonetheless I want the best players on the field and Young is currently the best player the Rockies have a chance of getting this offseason

by arpagamos on Feb 8, 2011 10:23 PM MST up reply actions

At any rate not sure it matters anymore

MLB sources including Reneck are tweeting that the Rockies are out of Young talks. The Rockies were only in this if the Rangers were desperate

by arpagamos on Feb 8, 2011 10:33 PM MST up reply actions

Well, if the Rangers don't move him this week, they could end up desperate soon

I’m the first one to say a trade’s not a trade until it’s done…but I’ll also be the first to say that a team’s potential interest in a trade isn’t done just because someone says they’re done.

What it means is, they’re done for now, until the Rangers come to their senses and realize how badly they screwed the pooch. Unless a bigger fool (Dodgers?) steps up first.

I disliked the Street signing at the time

and don’t like to pay good money for closers, but truthfully, that deal has worked out.

At the time of the Street extension, the depth that the Rockies had that I felt made Street expendable have either become expendable themselves (Corpas, Buchholz), or have yet to prove their ability (Weathers).

Due to this high attrition rate, I’d much rather keep Street and live with him being paid more than I’d like to see a reliever (especially injury prone ones) paid…

Also, while I think individual relievers get overvalued, I sometimes feel the bullpen itself gets undervalued and I think ours will be a massive strength this year – particularly if Belisle’s gains last season are retained…
