Rockies 7, D-Backs 4: Arizona Continues Sloppy Play, Rox Keep Composure

For the second straight game, Spring rust plagued the Diamondbacks as they demonstrated difficulty with focus, while the Rockies performed smoothly, leading the third straight Colorado victory between these two teams to inaugurate their new Scottsdale home.

Jose Lopez and Chris Iannetta got the offense started in the second inning off of Arizona starter Joe Saunders, with a single followed by a home run, respectively. The offense continued through the next four innings, as Ryan Spilborghs, Jason Giambi, Ben Paulsen, Ty Wigginton, Seth Smith, Hernan Iribarren and Jordan Pacheco all helped produce runs, with some help from Greg Smith, who doubled and scored on Spilborghs' sacrifice fly in the third. Ill-timed mistakes from Arizona's Russell Branyan, Miguel Montero, Konrad Schmidt (who botched two throws) and Wade Miley also benefited the Rockies.

Jason Hammel became the Rockies' third straight starter to escape his two innings of work with no runs allowed. Following him was Greg Smith, who threw a clean third but allowed Arizona to strike in the fourth, most of the damage done on a 3-run homer off the bat of Branyan.

The Rockies relievers were effective. Andrew Johnston finished off the fourth inning cleanly after coming into a bases loaded, one out situation. He was credited with the win, just as he was in Saturday's game, making him 2-0 in as many games. The newly acquired Matt Lindstrom began his Rockies career with a double to the troublesome Stephen Drew, but recovered to finish the inning without allowing him to cross the plate. Matt Daley also allowed a leadoff hit and escaped without damage. An encouraging performance from Franklin Morales saw him walk Ryan Roberts, but keep his composure to gather the third out with ease. Prospect Bruce Billings struck out two in his second inning of Spring play, and Claudio Vargas finished the game, earning a save while making it interesting, allowing a potential tying run to reach the plate, but he struck out pinch hitter Brandon Allen to end the game.

Too bad I can't deduct anything from these games

Because there were no radio nor MLB.tv feeds today. Saw good pitching, minus Smith of course, good defense, good offense. Really liked to see CDI hit one out, also liked Seth Smith’s oppo double. I’m not worried about CarGo. That’s pretty much all I’m going to take from this game.

I'm not trying to say it's an excuse, but...

….starting pitching injuries led directly to bullpen overuse, and lesser bullpen performance at the end of the season.

And our intial season 25 man roster missed more mangames just just about any in all of MLB. So to say it’s not a fair factor to consider would be silly. Had the Gints had the injuries we had, they’ve have on 75 games.

Well, it's almost over now, but I can share what else I saw

Greg Smith’s double was crushed, five feet from being out. Lindstrom didn’t look great, most of his outs were hit hard, but he still deserves recognition for getting out of the inning. Paulsen’s defensive play was good but not mind blowing. Thomas Field hit the ball hard twice, but was out both times. Miguel Montero’s passed ball was incredibly stupid on his part, and then he threw the ball away, good thing for him nobody was on base.

They cut all the relief innings except for Johnston getting out of the fourth, some of Lindstrom’s stuff, and Vargas.

Vargas got Brandon Allen to a 3-2 count, ball 3 was checked and not called a strike, got Vargas a little mad, but he came back and got Allen anyway, as we know.
