but I could be wrong. Doesn’t look good for him.. Even if it is only spring.

by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 1:50 PM MST up reply actions

It looks like Spring.

Stop using confirmation bias. The sample’s too small to be meaningful either way, whether he was hitting well or not.

by Rox Girl on Mar 12, 2011 1:54 PM MST up reply actions

If he wants to win the spot, he needs to start hitting.

It’s an open competition for the 2B spot. Spring is important. You can’t downplay that.

by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 2:00 PM MST up reply actions

You are right in one way

Spring is important to the club’s decision making. But it doesn’t really mean anything statistically.

Rocktober is not a time of year, it is a religion.

by hjrrockies on Mar 12, 2011 2:01 PM MST up reply actions

Yes I can. If he wants to win the 2B spot, he should look like he deserves it to the coaches.

Spring statistics during exhibition games are meaningless, especially those compiled at the beginning of the schedule. If the coaches base their decision off of them, whether it was for or against Lopez or Herrera or anybody else, I’d advocate for their dismissal.

by Rox Girl on Mar 12, 2011 2:03 PM MST up reply actions

Wow.

Coming into Spring, everybody knew it was an open competition for the job. If Lopez keeps hitting like this throughout the rest of spring (he’s gotten a lucky call on a should-be error, a few infield singles, and a couple bloop hits.. no XBH) and Herrera keeps hitting .300+, I don’t see how Lopez still gets the job.. Especially if his average stays below the Mendoza line. Rox were the ones who said it was an open competition. I disagree with what you’re saying right now.

by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 2:06 PM MST up reply actions

You disagree that the Rockies coaches should make the decision

based on who they feel is the best player and instead should go with who has the best 50 PA’s in Cactus League play?

by Rox Girl on Mar 12, 2011 2:10 PM MST up reply actions

No I don't disagree with that.

I just thought you were claiming that Lopez was the better player no matter what Spring gave us.

by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 2:12 PM MST up reply actions

No, I'm fine if Rockies coaches decide Lopez isn't the best option.

I’m not fine if they decide it based on a Cactus League batting average. It’s got to be a comprehensive decision taking everything they know about the players into account.

Lopez’s contact rate remains high, today was his first K, a lot of why he hasn’t had an XBH should be luck or fixable with minor adjustments. We know that he has more power than Herrera, that he hasn’t had an XBH thus far shouldn’t be held against him. Herrera has looked really nice so far, and that should be a credit to him somewhat, I don’t want it to be the major reason for a decision in his favor, though.

by Rox Girl on Mar 12, 2011 2:16 PM MST up reply actions

I agree with everything you are saying,

I still say you don’t have to hit for power to be effective at the top two spots in the order. Power is more important hitting fifth. I’d rather have Brett Butler as a leadoff hitter than Davey Johnson. I’d rather have a high contact guy whose on all the time than Vince Coleman’s Speed.

no, she's saying you can't look at Spring statistics alone to determine who makes the roster

We can’t see what happens in drills, batting practice. Therefore, we are limited in our observations.

The player that the coaches determine is the best for the position will win the job.

This is partly why we shouldn't pay much attention to Spring results.

The Rockies probably shouldn’t have won yesterday under regular season conditions, we probably wouldn’t lose today.

The only thing I put stock in is the score after about 4 or 5 innings

we didn't lose :)

I agree that ST is often way over rated, but I’m uncomfortable saying it means nothing or that the results don’t matter at all. I would agree that they traditionally have little to tell us about players performance during the season.

I don't have any problem saying the "results" (as in, stats, games won, etc.) don't mean anything.

The Spring itself obviously means something. Players get in shape, develop their mission statement for the season, and in our case, break their fingers.

I don't think the results are completely meaningless,

but I do think that they’re meaningless enough that the casual fan is better off ignoring them completely than trying to figure out how to correctly parse the tea leaves. I will say that I think the results of the first couple of weeks of ST are close to having zero meaning.

See if I ever wrote a real fan post it would be

about what we can learn from ST. I think it has something to tell us even in the first few weeks. I do think though that it can only point to something. Anything we see in spring is unreliable
