Lineups and such past the jump
Rockies' Lineup:
1B Jason Giambi
2B Jose Lopez
SS Hernan Iribarren
Other pitchers scheduled to pitch: RHP Clayton Mortensen, LHP Eric Stults, RHP Matt Daley, RHP Sean White, RHP Keith Weiser, RHP Cody Riordan
Padres' Lineup:
RF Will Venable
3B Jorge Cantu
1B Brad Hawpe

Seriously, you have to be kidding me. Ubaldo v Richard, Hawpe at 1B for SD, Weiser coming out of the pen. BUT WE GET THE SCRUB GAME TELEVISED.
That's another thing. Why are we always listening to opponent feeds and not Rockies' feeds?

So, one of the things that gives me night terrors
is the thought that if Dexter Fowler gets injured that Jim Tracy still thinks of Willy Taveras as a lead-off hitter.
I saw a tweet where someone asked Renck
if he thought Taveras could lead off

Yep
Hawpe and Francis were my “underdog” favorites… it’s weird that in such a short time they aren’t on the team anymore. Even though I get why, it still makes me sad!
Get used to looking at Cookie in that light, too :(
"Your classless organization accused our team of an unspeakable act. It was baseless, the Giants are classless, and I have no sympathy for your eternal damnation."
I was holding out hope for him, but it doesn't look good after this last injury. I wonder if Francis wasn't with another team, would we go after him?

I've had a Hawpe shirt hung up on my wall.
He was my favorite player on the team since I started following in 2006.

I have a Rockies jersey with Hawpe on the back
Will be retiring it to my wall this spring.
I don't want to keep believing in illusions
UZR can suck it!!
I have a Hawpe jersey, and will continue to wear it
Always a Rockie, no matter who’s signing his paychecks now

True story: I had a dream about him last night.
I’m pretty sure I played on a team with him (co-ed team, I guess?) and I got traded. There was other stuff that I don’t really remember.

If he's going to be batting that high in the order, I would hope his usual quota is for more than one.
Otherwise we might as rename him Aaron Miles.
Lopez has not looked good at all this spring.
by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 1:47 PM MST up reply actions
I don't think he even has a single XBH
but I could be wrong. Doesn’t look good for him.. Even if it is only spring.
by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 1:50 PM MST up reply actions
It looks like Spring.
Stop using confirmation bias. The sample’s too small to be meaningful either way, whether he was hitting well or not.
If he wants to win the spot, he needs to start hitting.
It’s an open competition for the 2B spot. Spring is important. You can’t downplay that.
by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 2:00 PM MST up reply actions
You are right in one way
Spring is important to the club’s decision making. But it doesn’t really mean anything statistically.
Rocktober is not a time of year, it is a religion.
Yes I can. If he wants to win the 2B spot, he should look like he deserves it to the coaches.
Spring statistics during exhibition games are meaningless, especially those compiled at the beginning of the schedule. If the coaches base their decision off of them, whether it was for or against Lopez or Herrera or anybody else, I’d advocate for their dismissal.
Wow.
Coming into Spring, everybody knew it was an open competition for the job. If Lopez keeps hitting like this throughout the rest of spring (he’s gotten a lucky call on a should-be error, a few infield singles, and a couple bloop hits.. no XBH) and Herrera keeps hitting .300+, I don’t see how Lopez still gets the job.. Especially if his average stays below the Mendoza line. Rox were the ones who said it was an open competition. I disagree with what you’re saying right now.
by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 2:06 PM MST up reply actions
You disagree that the Rockies coaches should make the decision
based on who they feel is the best player and instead should go with who has the best 50 PA’s in Cactus League play?
No I don't disagree with that.
I just thought you were claiming that Lopez was the better player no matter what Spring gave us.
by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 2:12 PM MST up reply actions
No, I'm fine if Rockies coaches decide Lopez isn't the best option.
I’m not fine if they decide it based on a Cactus League batting average. It’s got to be a comprehensive decision taking everything they know about the players into account.
Lopez’s contact rate remains high, today was his first K, a lot of why he hasn’t had an XBH should be luck or fixable with minor adjustments. We know that he has more power than Herrera, that he hasn’t had an XBH thus far shouldn’t be held against him. Herrera has looked really nice so far, and that should be a credit to him somewhat, I don’t want it to be the major reason for a decision in his favor, though.
I agree with everything you are saying,
I still say you don’t have to hit for power to be effective at the top two spots in the order. Power is more important hitting fifth. I’d rather have Brett Butler as a leadoff hitter than Davey Johnson. I’d rather have a high contact guy whose on all the time than Vince Coleman’s Speed.

I think I'm having trouble understanding what you're trying to say here..
So basically.. If Lopez doesn’t win the job.. Something is wrong?
by CentralCaliRox on Mar 12, 2011 2:09 PM MST up reply actions
no, she's saying you can't look at Spring statistics alone to determine who makes the roster
We can’t see what happens in drills, batting practice. Therefore, we are limited in our observations.
The player that the coaches determine is the best for the position will win the job.

I really don't know how much Mortensen's in the fifth starter battle.
The Rockies say he is, but putting him in for the sixth inning of a Jimenez start, after Paulino’s gone a frame sort of suggests otherwise. I think he’s actually an emergency backup for Ubaldo or JDLR right now.

This is partly why we shouldn't pay much attention to Spring results.
The Rockies probably shouldn’t have won yesterday under regular season conditions, we probably wouldn’t lose today.
The only thing I put stock in is the score after about 4 or 5 innings

we didn't lose :)
I agree that ST is often way over rated, but I’m uncomfortable saying it means nothing or that the results don’t matter at all. I would agree that they traditionally have little to tell us about players performance during the season.

I don't have any problem saying the "results" (as in, stats, games won, etc.) don't mean anything.
The Spring itself obviously means something. Players get in shape, develop their mission statement for the season, and in our case, break their fingers.

I don't think the results are completely meaningless,
but I do think that they’re meaningless enough that the casual fan is better off ignoring them completely than trying to figure out how to correctly parse the tea leaves. I will say that I think the results of the first couple of weeks of ST are close to having zero meaning.
Only shows who showed up ready and lucky (injury wise ).
"Why are they outlawin' the spit pitch? The curveball is a cheap 'n easy pitch; the spitter aint" Ty Cobb
"When I was pitching 90's in the seventies; I never thought I'd be pitching 70's in the nineties!" Frank Tanana
See if I ever wrote a real fan post it would be
about what we can learn from ST. I think it has something to tell us even in the first few weeks. I do think though that it can only point to something. Anything we see in spring is unreliable
"You know what real men do besides brawl in churches and use Valvoline to deep-fry falcon meat? They throw 344 mothertrucking pitches in a game. That’s crazy — as crazy as a gorilla with rabies, which, I am confident, is a thing that would be quite crazy." Dayn Perry
WIN. 2nd place in the catcus league!

No one is really here
but they did just say on the radio that Herrera is the favorite to win the job at 2nd. Now I fully agree that he shouldn’t be and that he will not be. I do believe that this does points to the fact that ST does mean something

It means that humans tend to make decisions or judgment calls based on short term, perspective lacking observations?
Yes. Stock market bubbles also mean something similar.
Moar baseball?
